Deck Of Cards
Wink Martindale

Words and Music by T. Texas Tyler (c) 1948

(Spoken words over instrumental or vocal accompaniment)

During the North African campaign a bunch of soldier boys had been on a long
hike. They arrived in a little town called Casino and the next day being
Sunday, several of the boys went to church. After the chaplain read the prayer
the text was taken up. Those of the boys who had prayerbooks took them out,
but one boy had only a deck of cards, so he spread them out. The sergeant who
commanded the boys saw the cards and said, "Soldier, put away those cards."
After the service was over the soldier was taken prisoner and brought before
the provost marshal. The marshal said "Sergeant why have you brought this man
here?" "For playing cards in church, Sir." "And what have you to say for
yourself, Son?" "Much, Sir", The soldier replied. The marshal said "I hope so,
for if not I shall punish you severely." The soldier said, "You see, Sir, I
have been on the march for six days and I had neither bible nor prayer book,
But I hope to satisfy you, Sir, with the purity of my intentions.

You see, Sir, when I look at the Ace it reminds me there is but one God, And
when I see the Deuce it reminds me that the Bible is divided into two parts,
the Old and New Testaments, And when I see the Trey, I think of the Father, the
Son and the Holy Ghost. And when I see the Four, I think of the four
evangelists who preached the gospel, There was Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
And when I see the Five, it reminds me of the five Wise Virgins who trimmed
their lamps; There were ten of them, five were wise and were saved, Five were
foolish and were shut out, And when I see the Six, it reminds me that in six
days God made this great Heaven and Earth, And when I see the Seven, it reminds
me that on the seventh day God rested, And when I see the eight I think of the
eight righteous persons God saved when he destroyed this earth, There was Noah,
his wife, their three sons and their wives.

And when I see the Nine I think of the lepers our Savior cleansed and nine of
the ten didn't even thank Him. When I see the Ten I think of the ten
commandments God handed to Moses on the table of stone, And when I see the
Queen, I think of the blessed Virgin Mary, who is Queen of Heav'n, And the Jack
or Knave is the Devil, And whenI count the number of spots on a deck of cards I
find *three hundred and sixty five, the number of days in a year. There are
fifty two cards, the number of weeks in a year. There are thirteen tricks, the
number of weeks in a quarter. There are four suits, the number of weeks in
month. There are twelve picture cards, the number of months in a year. So you
see, Sir, my deck of cards has served me as a Bible, Almanac and prayer book.

And, friends, this story is true. I know, because I was that soldier.

*Count the spots one to ten, the Jack as eleven, Queen as twelve, King as
thirteen and the Joker as one.

"The Deck of Cards"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This is a story about a soldier in the North Africa Campaign in World
War II. After heavy fighting the men returned to camp. The next day
being Sunday, the Chaplain had set up church service. The men were
asked to take out their Bibles or prayer books. The Chaplain noticed
one soldier looking at a deck of cards. After the service he was taken
by the Chaplain to see the Major.
The Chaplain explained to the Major what he had seen. The Major told
the young soldier how he would have to be punished if he could not
explain himself.
The young soldier told the Major that during the battle
he had neither a Bible or prayer book so he would use his deck of cards
and explained...........

"You see Sir, when I look at the Ace, it tells me that there is one God
and no other.

When I see the 2, it reminds me there is two parts of the Bible, the Old
and New Testaments.

The 3 tells me of the Trinity, of God the Father, God the Son and God
the Holy Spirit.

The 4 reminds me of the four Gospels. There was Matthew, Mark, Luke and
John.

When I see the 5, it tells me of the five unwise virgins, who were lost,
and five were saved.

The 6 makes me mindful that God created the earth in just six days, and
God said that it was good so He rested on the 7th day.

As I look at the 8, God destroyed all life by water except eight people.
There was Noah and his wife, their three sons and their wives.

When I see the 9, I think of the nine lepers that God healed. There were
ten in all but only one stopped to Thank Him.

The 10 tells me of the "Ten Commandments" carved in stone by the hand of
God.

The Jack makes me remember the prince of darkness. Like a roaring lion
that devours those he can.

When I look at the Queen, I see the blessed Mary, Mother of Jesus. As I
look at the last card I see the KING, this reminds me Jesus is the Lord
of Lords and King of Kings!

There are 365 spots on the cards, the number of days in a year.
There are 52 cards to a deck, the number of weeks in a year.
There are 12 picture cards, the number of months in a year.
There are 4 cards to a suit, the number of months in a quarter.
There are 13 suits, the number of weeks in a quarter."

...........And so the young soldier then said to the Major, "You see Sir
that my intentions were honourable. My deck of cards serves as my
Bible, Prayer book and Almanac."
I know, I was that soldier.

T. Texas Tyler himself has recorded it as well. I do sometimes hear T.
Texas Tyler's version on the "Real Country" radio network from ABC, which
plays country classics and new country blended in and it can be found on a
T. Texas Tyler compilation from Collector's Choice Music. Bill Anderson
also recorded it on a "Best Of" compilation on Curb Records.

Sincerely,

Bradley

"Deck Of Cards" - T. TEXAS TYLER
Recorded by T. Texas Tyler
Traditional Arrangement

NARRATIVE:
During the North African campaign, a bunch of soldier boys
had been on a long hike and they arrived in a little town
called Cascina. The next morning being Sunday, several of
the boys went to Church. A sergeant commanded the boys in
Church and after the Chaplain had read the prayer, the text
was taken up next.

Those of the boys who had a prayer book took them out, but
this one boy had only a deck of cards, and so he spread
them out. The Sergeant saw the cards and said, "Soldier
put away those cards." After the services was over, the
soldier was taken prisoner and brought before the Provost
Marshall.

The Marshall said, "Sergeant, why have you brought the

man here?" "For playing cards in church, Sir." "And what

have you got to say for yourself, son?" "Much, Sir."
Replied the soldier. The Marshall said, "I hope so, for
if not I shall punish you more than any man was ever punished."

The soldier said, "Sir, I've been on the march for about
six days, I had neither Bible nor prayer book, but I hope to

satisfy you, Sir, with the purity of my intentions."

With that, the boy started his story:

You see Sir, when I look at the "ACE", it reminds me that
there is but one God;

And the "DEUCE" reminds me that the Bible is divided into
two parts; The Old and the New Testaments;

And when I see the "TREY", I think of the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Ghost;

And when I see the "FOUR", I think of the four Evangelists
who preached the Gospel. There was Matthew, Mark, Luke and John;

And when I see the "FIVE", it reminds me of the five wise
virgins who trimmed their lamps. There were ten of them, five
were wise and were saved. Five were foolish and were shut out;

And when I see the "SIX", it reminds me that in six days,
God made this great heaven and earth;

When I see the "SEVEN", it reminds me that on the seventh day,
God rested from His great work;

And when I see the "EIGHT", I think of the eight righteous
persons God saved when He destroyed this earth. There was
Noah, his wife, their three sons and their wives;

And when I see the "NINE", I think of the lepers our Saviour
cleansed. And nine out of the ten didn't even thank Him.

When I see the "TEN", I think of the Ten Commandments God
handed down to Moses on a table of stone;

When I see the "KING", it reminds me that there is but one
King of Heaven, God Almighty;

And when I see the "QUEEN", I think of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
who is Queen of Heaven;

And the "JACK" or "KNAVE" is the Devil;

When I count the number of spots on a deck of cards,
I find 365, the number of days in a year;
There;s 52 cards, the number of weeks in a year;
There's 4 suits, the number of weeks in a month;
There's 12 picture cards, the number of months in a year;
There's 13 tricks, the number of weeks in a quarter;
So you see, Sir, my pack of cards serves me as a Bible,
Almanac and Prayer Book.

"And friends, this is a true story, because I was that soldier."

Note. Some sources credit T. Texas Tyler as the writer of the song.
However, other sources say it was the basis for a sermon by a
preacher in the late 1800's.
