Hi,

is there anyone who has ever thought about the meaning of the lyrics of
"Bright Eyes" by Art Garfunkel (words and music by Mike Batt)? I think
they are about death but I'm not sure. I love the song, the lyrics. It's
so mystic and I would like to hear your opinion.

Regards,

Alex

Hello Alex, the music was written, I believe, for the film "Watership
Down". The original story by Richard Adams tells of the escape of a
group of rabbits from a sort of rabbit Gestapo called "The Owsla".
The rabbit go through many adventures and trials, making their way
through the woods and downstream, and finally their leader dies. To me
the music and the words are talking about death - the death of something
so beautiful and vibrant one minute - and pale and lifeless the next.
I suppose only Mike Batt and Art Garfunkel are the ones to really answer
your question. I am just passing on my own view.

Bright Eyes - Art Garfunkel.

Is it a kind of a dream,
Floating out on the tide,
Following the river of death downstream?
Oh, is it a dream?

There's a fog along the horizon,
A strange glow in the sky,
And nobody seems to know where you go,
And what does it mean?
Oh, is it a dream?

Bright eyes,
Burning like fire.
Bright eyes,
How can you close and fail?

How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes.

Is it a kind of a shadow,
Reaching into the night,
Wandering over the hills unseen,
Or is it a dream?

There's a high wind in the trees,
A cold sound in the air,
And nobody ever knows when you go,
And where do you start,
Oh, into the dark.

Bright eyes,
burning like fire.
Bright eyes,
how can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
bright eyes.

Bright eyes,
burning like fire.
Bright eyes,
how can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes.
