Help! This could be an emergency!
I need to send this to a friend but I can't remember who
wrote it or if these are the correct words! :) Please do
a good deed for one in need! Thanks very much!
(Isn't this the saddest song you ever heard?)
The melody is beautiful :)

Why
is it you must be
so very cruel to me
in order to be kind?

Why can't I hold you close
do you insist your toes
are being stood on by mine?

Why when I kiss your lips
do you astound me?
Saying that you won't
put your arms around me?
No one should be that cold
whatever I've done
surely
I've a right to know
Oh why
Oh why
Oh why

Why is it every time
we visit friends of mine
You never want to go?

Why when I'm feeling good
You act as if I should
be
at an all time low

Why after all these years
we've been together
Must you behave as if
we've hardly ever spoken
Let alone met
It's seems that you're happy
as long as I'm upset
oh Why
oh why
oh why

Is it that you don't love me?
Oh why
Have you just had enough of me
Oh why
Do I always have to cry
myself to sleep
7 days a week~

Da da da da da da da da da (lots of these)

Why in the name of God
are you so angry
Could it be that you can no longer stand me?
tell me and I will go
you're breaking my heart just in case
you didn't know
Oh Why
Oh Why
Oh Why
Oh Why
Oh Why
Oh Why
Oh Why

I added this verse of my own-----

Oh why oh why
are there 23 whys in this song?
Oh whyyyyyyyy?
;)

choice. Don't wanna be just your friend. You keep telling me that your

The Eagles, "Desperado"

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You've been out ridin' fences for so long now.
Oh, you're a hard one, and I know that you've got your reasons.
These things that are pleasin' you can hurt you somehow.

Don't you draw the Queen of Diamonds, boy, she'll beat you if she's able.
You know the Queen of Hearts was always your best bet.
Now it seems to me some fine things have been laid upon your table.
But you only want the ones that you can't get.

Desperado, oh you ain't gettin' no younger.
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home.
And freedom, oh freedom, well that's just some people talkin'.
Your prison is walkin' through this world all alone.

Don't your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine.
It's hard to tell the night time from the day.
You're losin' all your highs and lows, ain't it funny how the feelin' goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate.
It may be rainin', but there's a rainbow above you.
You'd better let somebody love you. (Let somebody love you)
You'd better let somebody love you, before it's too late.

My Candidate for Saddest Lyrics:

"Ain't Got Nothin' to do ('cept roll around Heaven all day)"

Up in the morning,
Out on the job.
Work like a devil for my pay.
But that lucky old sun
Ain't got nothin' to do
'Cept roll around Heaven all day.

Fight with my woman,
Fuss with my kids.
Sweat till I'm wrinkled and grey.
But that lucky old sun
Ain't got nothin' to do
'Cept roll around Heaven all day.

Oh Lord, can't you see that I'm pining.
I've got tears running from my eyes.
Why don't you send down that cloud with the silver lining ?
Lead me to Paradise.

Show me that river,
Take me across.
Wash all my troubles away.
Like that lucky old sun,
I won't have nothin' to do
'Cept roll around Heaven all day.

Papa Loves Mambo. I cry in my beer everytime I
hear it. Just thinking about it gets me gurgling.
I swear. :)

Here are some of the lyrics-

Papa loves Mambo
Mama loves Mambo
Look at them sway with it
Gettin so gay with it
shoutin ole with it wow
Uhhhh

Papa loves Mambo
Mama loves Mambo
Papa does great with it
swings like a gate with it
he loses weight with it
now!!!

He goes to
she goes froe
he goes fast
she goes slow
he goes left
she goes right
Papas looking for Mama
but Mama's nowhere in sight

Papa loves Mambo
Mama loves Mambo
Having a fling again
younger than spring again
feeling that zing again
wow!!

Papa loves Mambo
Mama loves Mambo
Don't let her rumba
Don't let her samba
cause Papa loves Mama
tonite!!
Uhhh

<sambas outta da room....Uhh>

Are you crying yet? ;)

Are you lost Daddy? I asked tenderly.
Shut up, he explained.

Oh, god - it has to be one of the Temple Of The Dog songs, Chris Connell wrote
this after hearing about the fatal OD of his former roommate, Andrew Woods of
Mother Love Bone. Damn tragic. Especially when Connell's voice break half way.

When the sun's gone
And the moon's bright
And you drift away
I can hear you say
that the world in black
is upon your back
And your smile fades
So you ditch away
And you close the shades

Don't try to do it
Don't try to kill your time
You might do it
Then you can't change your mind
You've got a hold onto your time
'Til you break through these
Times of troubles

When you try to talk
And the words get hard
And they put you down
Don't you stay away
Don't you ditch away

I saw you swinging
I saw you singing
Swinging your arms around
I know you're playing
but sometimes the rules get hard
You've got to hold onto your time
'Til you break through
Times of trouble...

Justin Hayward, "Forever Autumn".

The summer sun's fading as the year grows old.
And darker days are drawing near.
The winter winds will be much colder
Now you're not here.

I watch the birds fly south across the autumn sky.
And one by one, they disappear.
I wish that I was flying with them
Now you're not here.

Like the sun through the trees, you came to love me.
Like a leaf on a breeze, you blew away.

Though autumn's golden gown we used to kick away,
You always loved this time of year.
Those fallen leaves lie undisturbed now
'Cause you're not here.

Like the sun through the trees you came to love me.
Like a leaf on a breeze, you blew away.

A gentle rain falls softly on my weary eyes.
As if to hide a lonely tear.
My life will be forever autumn
'cause you're not here.
'Cause you're not here.
'Cause you're not here.

Oh, no kidding! I always get bleary-eyed when I hear that...

'Cause I never thought I'd lose
I always thought I'd win
Never thought I'd feel
This fire beneath my skin
I can't believe you love me
I never thought you'd come
I guess I misjudged love
Between a father and his son.

There's a song on the Prince boxed set (Hits 1, Hits 2, B-Sides) called
"Another Lonely Christmas". Real emotional song about a girl he loved
who died on December 25th.

"Last night, I spent another lonely Christmas,
Oh darlin' you shoulda been there . . ."

Killer song--you should hear it if you haven't already.

Mama, just killed a man

Pulled my trigger now he's dead
Mame, life had just begun
But not I've gone and thrown it all away
Mama..oo-oo-ooh
Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again thia time tomorrow
Carry on...carry on
As if nothing really matters

Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine
Body's aching all the time
Goodbye everybody, I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth

I cry every time I hear the line from Mike and the Mechanics, "In the

his baby's newborn tears.

How about "He Would Be 16" by Michelle Wright

"He would be 16, the son she never knew
"It hurt so much to give him up, but what else could she do?"

Makes me choke up every time I hear it, I can't even hum along. You
can just hear all a mother's love and longing in that first line.

There's another one that causes a little tear to roll down my cheek,
by Patty Loveless (jeese, even her name is sad)

"How can I help you to say good-bye?
"It's OK to hurt, and it's OK to cry
"Come let me hold you and I will try
"But how can I help you to say good-bye"

It's about a mother helping her daughter through all the goodbyes in
her life, first moving away from her best friend, then a marriage
breaking down, finally her mother's death (sob).

I'm not what you'd call a big C&W fan, but I know good music when I
hear it.

Wildflower by Skylark

She's faced the hardest times
You could imagine
And many times
Her eyes fought back the tears

And when her youthful world
Was about to fall in
Each time her slender shoulders
Bore the weight of all her fears
And a sorrow no one hears
Still rings in midnight silence in her ears

Let her cry for she's a lady
Let her dream
For she's a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower
Growing wild

And if by chance I should hold her
Let me hold her for the time
But if allowed just one possesion
I would pick her from the garden to be mine

Be careful how you touch her
For she'll awaken
And sleep's the only freedom
That she knows

And when you walk into her eyes
You won't believe
The way she's always paying
For a debt she never owes
And a silent wind stil blows
That only she can hear
And so she goes

Let her cry for she's a lady
Let her dream
For she's a child
Let the rain fall down upon her
She's a free and gentle flower
Growing wild

She's a flower
Growing wild

One song that gets me is "Do You Remember?" by Phil Collins
Nothing seems emptier than a hole in your heart where love used to be,
and no matter how much you study, how much you work, how much you
drink, or how many other people you date, nothing can fill it again.

"The things we won't recall
And the feelings we'll never find
It's taken so long to see it
But we never seemed to have the time
There was always something more important to do
More important to say
But 'I love you' wasn't one of those things
And now it's too late. . ."

In the nineties, it's easily "I Can't Make You Love Me," by Reid and
Shamblin, recorded by Bonnie Raitt.
But no examination of the saddest lyrics ever written would count if it
didn't include at least three songs by Janis Ian. Ian is extremely
talented, but her records should really should carry a warning label for
people with clinical depression. Her lyrics could counteract Prozac!

IN THE WINTER
Words and music by Janis Ian

The days are okay;
I watch the TV in the afternoon
If I get lonely
The sound of other voices, other rooms
are near to me
I'm not afraid!

The operator
She tells the time
It's good for a laugh,
There's always radio,
And for a dime I can talk to God.
Dial-A-Prayer?
Are you there?
Do you care?
Are you there?

And in the winter
Extra blankets for the cold
Fix the heater, getting old
I am wiser now, I know,
But still as big a fool
concerning you.

I met your friend
She's very nice...
What can I say?
It was an accident
I never dreamed we'd meet again this way,
You're looking well
I'm not afraid.

You have a lovely home
Just like a picture...
No, I live alone.
I've found it easier,
You must remember
How I never liked the party life
Up all night
Lovely wife
You have a lovely wife.

And in the winter
Extra blankets for the cold
Fix the heater, getting old
You are with her now, I know,
I'll live alone forever
Not together now.

For me, it's Silent Lucidity by Queensryche

Hush now, don't you cry
Wipe away the tear drop from your eye
You're lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
Spinning in your head
Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game of life
So here it is another chance
Wide awake you face the day
Your dream is over . . . or has it just begun?

There's a place I like to hide
A doorway that I run through in the night
Relax child you were there
But only didn't realize it and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind
Commanding in another world
Suddenly you hear and see
This magic new dimension

If you open your mind for me
You won't rely on open eyes to see
The walls you built within
Come tumbling down and a new world will begin
Living twice at once you learn
You're safe from pain in the dream domain
A soul set free to fly
A round trip journey in your head
Master of illusion, can you realize
Your dream's alive, you can be the guide but...

**************************

And Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchel

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say I love you, right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way.

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Something's lost, but something's gained
In living every day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

There's a country song called "I Can't Cry Hard Enough"
that would have to win some kind of award in this category. I don't
know the name of the artist, but the gist of the song is that the
singer's girlfriend/wife has died and "I can't cry hard enough/No I
can't cry hard enough/For you to hear me now." Takes the cake, if you

Here's one. Words and Music by Hank Williams
(and he really went to the bottom of the well on this one! SAD SONG)

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
Hear that lonesome whipoor will,
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome I could cry

I've never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hide it's face and cry

Have you ever seen a robin weep
When leaves began to die
That means he's lost the will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry

"So Hard to Say Goodbye" by Boyz II Men is probably the best song they
ever made, IMHO. And yes, it's sad. But ironically, it's a catchy
tune... so easy to sing along with it.

How bout a little number by Garbage off the Romeo and Juliet Soundtrack?

#1 crush

I would die for you
I would die for you
I've been dying just to feel you by my side
To know that you're mine

I would cry for you
I would cry for you
I will wash away your pain with all my tears
And drown your fear

I will pray for you
I will pray for you
I will sell my soul for something true
someone like you

See your face every place that I walk in
Hear your voice every time that I'm talking
You will believe in me
And I'll never be ignored

I will burn for you
Feel pain for you
I will twist the knife and bleed my aching heart
And tear it apart

I will lie for you
Beg and steal for you
I will crawl on my hands and knees until you see
You're just like me

Violate all the love that I'm missing
Throw away all the pain that I'm living
You will believe in me
And I'll never be ignored

I would die for you
I would kill for you
I would steal for you
I'd do time for you
I will wait for you
I'd make room for you
I'd sink ships for you
Take the cross for you
To be a part of you
cause I believe in you
I believe in you
I would die for you

_The Ballad of Penny Evans_
Steve Goodman 1973
sung to the traditional tune "The Flying Cloud"

Oh my name is Penny Evans and my age is 21
A young widow of the war that's being fought in Viet Nam
And I have two infant daughters and I do the best I can
Well they say the war is over but I think it's just begun

And I remember I was 17 on the day I met young Bill
At his father's grand piano we'd play good old "Heart and Soul"
And iI only knew the left hand part and he the right so well
He's the only boy I slept with, and the only one I will

It's first we had a baby girl and we had two good years
It was next the 1a notice came, and we parted without tears
It was nine months from our last good night our second babe appears
So it's ten months...and a telegram confirming all our fears.

Now every month I get a check from some Army bureaucrat
And it's every month I tear it up and send the damn thing back
Do you think that makes it all right, do you think I'de fall for that?
You can keep your bloody money, it won't bring my Billy back.

I never cared for politics, speeches I can't understand
Likewise never took no charity from any living man
But tonight there's fifty-thousand gone in that unhappy land
And fifty-thousand "Heart and Soul's"....being played with just one
hand

Oh my name is Penny Evans and I've just gone twenty-one
A young widow of the war that's being fought in Viet Nam
And iI have two infant daughters, I thank God I have no sons
Now they say the war is over , but I think it's just begun

I think that some of the saddest lyrics I have heard are from the song
"Lake of Fire" that Nirvana played on the Live Unplugged in New York
Album. It says "know about the place folks go when they die, they
don't go to heaven where the angels fly, they go to a lake of fire and
fry..." and "...knew a lady, came from Deluth, bit by a dog with a
rabid tooth, she went to her grave just a little too soon...." Now
those lines can get rather sad if you ask me

"Christmas Without You" by Tommy Page

And I remember sitting by the fire
???
We light the candles together
Decorate the tree, sing a carol or two
I hang a mistletoe as an excuse to kiss you

Now it won't feel like Christmas without you
And the color of Christmas has gone from white to blue
No more holiday cheer
Just tear after tear
Christmas without you

Now when I get sad from thinking of you
I pray to God and hope you're happy, too
And though you are so far away
It;'s comforting to know we'll spend Christmas together someday

The last! The very last
All richly, brightly, dazzling yellow
Perhaps if the sun's tears
Would sing against a white stone

Such, such a yellow
Is carried lightly 'way up high
It went away, I'm sure
Because it wished to kiss the world goodbye

For seven weeks I've lived in here
Penned up inside this ghetto.
But I have found my people here
The dandelions call to me
And the white chestnut branches in the court
Only I never saw another butterfly

That butterfly's the last one --
Butterflies don't live in here

Or, how about:

2 little children a boy and a girl,
Sat by the old church door
The little girl's feet were as brown as the curl
That fell on the dress that she wore

The little boy's coat was all ragged and torn
A tear shone in each little eye
"Why don't you run home to your mama" I said
And this was the maiden's reply:

"Mother's in heaven, they took her away
And left Shaun and me all alone
She said she would come for her darlings some day
Till then we haven't a home

Papa was lost at the sea long ago
We waited all night on the shore
He was a lifesaving captain you know
But he never came back any more"

The sexton came early to ring the church bell
And found them beneath the snow white
The angels had made room for the darlings to dwell
In Heav'n with their mother that night.

I once knew an Irish tenor who'd sing that, and there wouldn't be a dry
eye in the place!

I'd have to say, "Alone Again, Naturally". This is the first song I've
ever heard about
committing suicide. It's by Gilbert O'Sulliven. Great song to listen to
when you're
feeling depressed.

In a little while from now,
If I'm not feeling any less dour
I promised myself I'd treat myself
And visit a nearby tower.

And climbing to the top,
Will throw myself off
In an effort to
Make it clear to those
Who wondered what it feels like to be shattered.

Left standing in the lurch,
By the church
With people saying,
"My God that's tough, she stood him up
No point in us remaining".

May as well go home
I decided on my own
Alone again, naturally.

Some of these lyrics I'm unsure of.

Harry Chapin's "Taxi"
Here's just the last verse...

There was not much more for us to talk about,
Whatever we had once was gone
I drove the car up the driveway, past the gate and the fine-trimmed lawn.
We said we must get together, but I knew it'd never be arranged
She handed me $50 for a $2.50 fare she said, "Harry, keep the change."
Well another man might have been angry,
And another man might have been hurt,
But another man never would have let her go,
I stashed the bill in my shirt.

You see, she was going to be an actress and I was going to learn to fly
She took off to find the footlights, I took off for the sky.
And now she's acting happy, inside her handsome home,
And me, I'm flying in my taxi, taking tips and getting stoned
I go flying so high
When I'm stoned.

Two songs by Queen. "Who wants to live forever" from the kind of magic
album and "mother love" from the Made In Heaven album. The singer seal
said of the first one " The first time I heard it it made me cry ". It
is a great song - it may have been written for a film but the emotion
behind it is very strong. Mother Love is the last vocal that Freddie
Mercury ever recorded with Queen and what a brilliant haunting bluesy
track it is.

Also Wings Of An Angel by SKIN is very sad but hopeful.

Take Me Back
Lyrics By Randy Boone (BMI)
(c) 1983 Shàlako Music (BMI)

That concrete floor down at the railroad station
Is gettin' colder and harder on my back
But I guess it's better than an empty park bench
Or along some old abandoned one way track.

Since I left you every day has been pure misery
And at night your memory comes around to haunt me
And the only thing that keeps me from insanity
Is the hope that someday you might take me back

CHORUS:
Take me back to the lovin' arms that held me long ago
Take me back give me one more chance to prove I love you so
Loneliness has almost got me losin' my mind
Baby take me back just one more time

I guess I thought I could do without you
Now I know that I need you so bad
And I hope it's not to late, cause I finally got it straight
You're the best thing this fool ever had

For sad lyrics few people can touch John Prine. He has a lot to choose
from but I would have to go with the end of Angel From Montgomery:

There's Flies in the kitchen
I can hear them there buzzin'
and I ain't done nothing
Since I woke up today
How the hell can a person
Go to work in the morning
And come home in the Evening
With nothing to say
