I think the following set of lyrics is from a song by the New Vaudeville
Band (of Winchester Cathedral fame). Could someone please confirm the
artist and song title, from the mid to late '60s..

Taking a trip out to Africa (Benny?)/Out where the weather is fine
If you see a red dog and he's roaming free/then you'll know he's mine
Out in Africa (Benny?)...

Could it have been someone named Marty Wilde? Here's what I found
about him on a page that turned up in a search for Abergavenny:

hmmm .. bit of confusion about this it seems ... I was born and brought up
in Abergavenny (don't recommend the place - there's not much there <grin>) -
and we all thought that Marty Wilde sang it

"perhaps" he did record it as well since a couple people claimed he
wrote it...i'm just familiar (and i use that word loosely) with the
Shannon version...

"Abergavenny" (which has always struck me as a likely source for the idea
behind the music in the U. S. "Old Spice" commercials) was a hit for the
group named "Shannon"...and the lead singer was indeed Marty Wilde. But you
UK folks got to experience the other Marty Wilde hits from the early
'60s...other than Abergavenny, the only other Marty Wilde hit to cross the
Atlantic was his solo "Bad Boy" in 1960. Aah....I just love bubblegum
music...

Non-album tracks

Taking a trip up to Abergavenny,
Hopin' the weather is fine.
If you should see a red dog runnin' free,
Well, you know, he's mine.

Aah, chasing the hills up to Abergavenny,
I've got to get there, and fast.
If you can't go, then I'll promise to show
You a photograph.

Aah, passing the time with paradise people,
Paradise people are fine by me.
Sunshine forever, lovely weather,
Don't you wish you could be

Takin' a trip up to Abergavenny,
Hoping the weather is fine?
If you should see a red dog runnin' free,
Well, you know, he's mine.

Aah, passin' the time with paradise people,
Paradise people are fine by me.
Sunshine forever, lovely weather,
Don't you wish you could be

A-chasing the hills up to Abergavenny?
I've got to get there, and fast.
If you can't go, then I promise to show
You a photograph.

A little photograph,
A little photograph,
Up to Abergavenny.

La la la la la...
