Ok, someone help settle an argument for me, PLEASE.

The song "Nobody" by Sylvia ("sitting in a restaurant, you walked by, i seem to
recall that certain look in your eye...") is NOT a Country & Western song,
correct? It is more of a POP song. I mean, I've heard the darn song and it's
a pop song to me. [I have never really heard any of Sylvia's other stuff, so
that might be country, but this particular song doesn't sound like it to me.]

It was # 1 on the country charts, if that answers your question.

I imagine you heard Dolly Parton, Alabama, and Willie Nelson in the early '
80's and Billy Ray Cyrus and Garth Brooks in the ' 90's.

Yes, I am QUITE familiar with Country music. However, the version of "Nobody"
that *I* know doesn't sound like country music to me.

Hey Lisa,

That is a country song. But it did hit #15 on the Hot 100 in 1982. I was
hunting for that song for ages, and finally got it on a RCA compilation
called "Nipper's Greatest Hits".

Doesn't to me either, but Sylvia was an established country artist before and
after that single and her country fanbase ate it up.

The rest of the album with "Nobody" on it isn't exactly country either (just
barely qualifies as country-pop), but I understand her earlier work was
straight-up country.

"Pillow Talk" and "Love is Strange" (with Mickey Gilly) both made the
pop charts as well. I never looked at "Pillow Talk" as being country
either. But then again, Blondie did a cover of "Ring of Fire"... and Van
Halen did "Ice Cream Man".

Alright, the reason why I asked is that I was helping out at theme park event
hosted by a country radio station. they told us at the Karaoke stage that
people could ONLY sing country. However, a woman argued with us that "Nobody"
IS country. I guess, it can be considered so if Sylvia is a country singer, but
we all thought "Nobody" was pushing the limit of what IS and ISN'T country.
Even more so than some of Shania Twain's pop/country crossover music.
[especially, because the radio station was probably more interested in the
NEWER country music anyhow...]

Thanks for all the info and opinions everyone. :)

It might help if you were talking about Sylvia Kirby, as the original poster
was, rather than Sylvia Robinson.

I missed your original post, but in my opinion (speaking as someone who
listens to country music mostly because that's the only station I can get
down here in rural North Carolina), Sylvia's song "Nobody" is a country
song, albeit a watered-down country song. I would put it in the same
category as some of Ronnie Milsap's crossover hits (i.e. "Any Day Now" or
"There's No Getting Over Me").

I wouldn't put it in the same category as Shania Twain because Shania's
music is pop music with a country tinge to it, which I think is the exact
opposite of Sylvia.
