out of the door"

Hi Tom,
Just last summer we discovered that this was a very elusive piece of music
to find. My cousin was looking for a recording of Turn Around for a family
event. It was Ronald Hontz who helped her out by putting in a lot of his
time and effort to copy it for her off of a recording done by the Kingston
Trio. He was so kind as to mail it to her in time for her daughter's
special day. Thank you again Ronald for all of your help :) Later (long
after the fact) we discovered an available version of the song by Sharon
Lois and Bram. I hope this help..the lyric follow.

Turn Around
Where are you going my little one, little one?
Where are you going my baby, my own?
Turn around and you're two,
Turn around and you're four
Turn around and you're a young girl
Going out of the door.
Turn around, turn around,
Turn around and you're a young girl
Going out of the door.
Where are you going my little one, little one?
Little drindles and petticoats, where have they gone?
Turn around and you're tiny,
Turn around and you're grown,
Turn around and you're a young wife
With babes of your own.
Turn around, turn around,
Turn around and you're a young wife
With babes of your own.
It's actually "turn around," not "look around." Probably a search
under this title would get you some results from any of the standard
search engines on the Web.
I remember a version of it being done by a group that sounded like
the Association or the Vogues ... but I can't say for sure.
There is also a newsgroup (at least one that I know of) about
weddings ... perhaps someone there could help.

A young *girl* ??? Wait a minute. This means that there's at least
two versions of the song in existence, because the one I recall very
definitely said "a young *MAN* going out of the door."
I'm trying to recall whether the entire song as I knew it featured
only the boy growing into a man, or whether it shifted perspectives
back and forth between the boy and the girl. I find that when I try
to sing the words to myself, though, I'm mixing up this one with the
beautiful "Sunrise, Sunset" from "Fiddler on the Roof" which definitely
*does* speak of both the girl and the boy.
Jeez, now I'm curious. If anyone out there knows the lyrics for the
"young boy" version of the song, could you post them here (and remember
the original requester wanted replies e-mailed).
Thanks.

oh, and btw: A version by SHARON LOIS AND BRAM??????????
Not exactly what I'd consider their typical song!!
(For those who don't know, SL&B are very good and
very popular children's singers, but their songs
are typically really upbeat and bouncy, dance-along,
jump-in-the-air kind of stuff)
some sources which may turn up a "little boy version"
pete seeger "world of pete seeger"
sally rogers "love will guide us"
neil diamond "primitive"
kingston trio "time to think"
priscilla herdman "darkness into light"
the sally rogers and priscilla herdman references are the most recent
although they are hardly household names!

Oh I'm sure that there are several versions of this song. The family
occasion that it was required for was a Bat Mitzvah...a girl's 13th
birthday. The first verse was played while she lit a candle so I really
don't think that the reference was to a "young man" in this Kingston Trio
version. However it may be in other versions.

Sharon Lois and Bram have done hundreds of classic children's songs...many
of them upbeat as you say and many very beautiful, tender songs such as
Turn Around. It is on their CD "Elephant Party". Please refer to
http://207.6.100.1/elephant/elparty.html I have no idea if they sing of a
young man or a young girl, but they do indeed sing this song both on this
CD and on one of the episodes of their old television program.

^^^^^^^^
Actually, the word is "dirndls". According to Funk and Wagnalls, a
dirndl is "A woman's dress with a full skirt gathered to a tight
bodice".
