Like to have your thoughts ... "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro still makes me cry,
after all these years. What's yours?

I'd Have to agree with Jeff Buckley, Especially 'Lover, You should have
come over' plus 'Last Goodbye'
also:
Stabbing Westward - 'Sleep'
King's X -'Legal Kill'
Heather Nova -'Island'
Nick cave -'People Ain't No Good'
Carter USM -'Falling On A Bruise'
Massive Attack -'Teardrop'

"He Would Be Sixteen" sung by Michelle Wright. It's about a woman who
regrets having had an abortion years earlier.

"Same Auld Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg always makes me feel sad.
This is a song I do not like to perform live since my tears start flowing
towards the end.

"Soldier In the Rain" by England Dan and John Ford Coley sometimes makes me
feel sad.

For me, it's "The Sweetest Embrace" by Barry Adamson featuring Nick Cave.
Amazing song. There's something about Cave's voice that has me bawling.

The departed Jeff Buckley's GRACE album wins hands-down, for me. The line
"Lover, You Should've Come Over" where he says, "It's never over... she's the
tear that hangs inside my soul forever." Such a *voice* that man had.

He also covers Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", but Cohen's version hits me
squarely with more of an impact - "And every breath we drew was hallelujah..."

Mark Lanegan's solo albums always do a number on me too.

It doesn't make me cry or anything like that, but I was thinking about
an old Black Sabbath tune:
,,,happiness I cannot feel and love to me is so unreal...
...and so as you hear these words telling you that I'm off my state
I tell you to enjoy life, I wish I could, but it's too late...

David Bowie's "Bewlay Brothers", a heart-breaking song about loving
someone more than anything else in the world only to find them pulled
away from you by their own increasing insanity, and ending up not
being able to understand them any more. All the more chilling and
heart-breaking when you realise the song is about his older brother
who ended up in a mental asylum (and eventually killed himself). The
last bit of the song when the "mad voices" take over is as chilling as
it is possible to be in song.

Great choice, Erin. Or "The Man Who Got Away".

One of my choices would have to be "If He Walked Into My Life" from MAME.
The song that always makes me cry, but isn't depressing, is "Look Over
There" from LA CAGE AUX FOLLES.

i like all those teen sad songs from the sixties... like "I Can Never Go
Home Anymore" by the Shangri-Las where the mom dies... or The Supremes'
"I'm Livin' In Shame" where the mom dies... or... getting away from
parental death... how about Roy Orbison's "Crying"? The Carpenters
singing "Goodbye to Love" and Judy Garland singing "Better Luck Next
Time" or "But Not For Me".

Also... The Smiths "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want", "How
Soon Is Now?" "I Know It's Over", "Paint a Vulgar Picture", "Meat is
Murder" and of course "Suffer Little Children"

and then there's the whole albums of Tears for Fears "The Hurting", Joy
Division "Closer", Pink Floyd "The Wall", Nine Inch Nails "Pretty Hate
Machine" and oh... Nick Cave... anything he does is depressing...

i'm sure there's more than that, but it might take therapy for me to get
all of it out in one email :)

Take your pick from The Cure's _Pornography_. _Faith_ as well, but that's
more gloomy, not as suicidal.

Someone mentioned Joy Division's _Closer_, with which I agree, the most
depressing album ever--especially since you listen to it knowing that Ian
Curtis killed himself shortly after it...

Erin had a nice selection and I too am drawn to the older songs like
"Seasons in the Sun", "Here There Everywhere", "Without You" which I
know is supposed to be a love song, but I associate it with my oldest
son, who was taken from us when he was 21. Lots of songs of that era
(Beatles and late 80's) make me terribly sad.

I also have great empathy for the World War II songs. So many young men
who had so much promise and such short lives and were gypped of life's
sweet moments ... their lives cut short so we can have our lifestyles of
today. "I'll Be Seeing You", "Till Then", many of the Inspots songs,
guess my list is too long to commit to this venue.

Oh, shoot.. there are so many songs I love but just can't listen to
anymore...

"Alone Again (Naturally)" Gilbert O'Sullivan

"Anything For You" Gloria Estefan

"(I Know) I Need to be in Love" The Carpenters
(the part about "wide awake at 4am, without a friend in sight"
breaks me up every time )

(also "Taps" and "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes - but I don't know
if those necessarily count as songs.)

If I try to think of more I might get depressed...

First, let me say that I have read all of these wonderful posts, and I just love
how music has moved so many of us to tears... How many of us have been sitting
on the kitchen floor at 3am, hitting the rewind button over and over again so we
could hear the perfect sad song to help heal our heartache. THAT too, is why I
love lyrics. next, Jan, I want to tell you especially, I am sure I speak for all
of us when I say you have our deepest sympathies on the loss of your boy. Thanks
for sharing that song and why it means so much to you. I know I will never hear
it in the same way again.
Now for my selection: All of those old TRUCKER SONGS! specially the one I
have mentioned before about the kid who gets on the CB and told some trucker that
his dad promised him a ride in his rig but died before he could, and then the
trucker was so moved, the trucker (and all the other truckers who heard him)
showed up to give the kid a ride in their trucks, and when they get there, the
kid is not only POOR, but in a wheelchair <weep>
Next, what about "Jeannie's Afraid Of The Dark" by Dolly Parton and
what's-his-name (johnny will know) That one is a killer! Oh, any of those old
country songs will get you unless you have a heart of stone.
My songs, "At This Point In My Life" by Tracy Chapman. Reminds me of my
mother... reminds me of me. "I've Been Talking To My Angel" by Melissa
Etheridge--reminds me of my uncle who's passed away. "Lord Grenville" by Al
Stewart. "Netherlands" by Dan Fogelberg. "Seeing Things" by the Black
Crowes. "Wuthering Heights" by Pat Benetar. "Morning Song" by Jewel (say what
you will about her, but this song totally explains why my house is NEVER clean...
and jerks my tears) "Big Empty" by Stone Temple Pilots. "I Still Got The Blues
For You" by Gary Moore. "I Will Buy You A New Life" by Everclear. "God Help
The Outcasts" from the Hunchback soundtrack. "After All These Years" as sung by
Beth N. Chapman. "Mommy Tippy-Toeing" --it isn't sad but makes me cry just the
same. what can I say? I'm a cry baby! Anyway, there are others, I will
probably think of them later... but these are the biggies. --mamu

This also made me think of two Concrete Blonde songs. Concrete Blonde, while I
love 'em, are CDs that sit around and gather dust because it's torture for me
to listen to them, but from the first CB album I think, the song "Kim, She
Said."

"Oh Kim... remember when
We had a million plans
And we believed them
Angry words, ring in my head
I'd give up every song I've got in me
To bring you back again
She said... I would
She said 'Hold on, hold out, 'cause it's good'
She said, 'You're right' (I know that you're right)
Hold on, hold out, cause I *know* that you can fight
I know that you can
You're right again
There is an easy way
Out of this world
I'm stayin', I wonder why
It may be all I have, but it's mine, it's mine."

And "Heal It Up" is another one - off the Mexican Moon album:

"Feelin' the pinch
Feelin' the hold
Feelin' the void
Deep in my soul...
Deep in your eyes, you're 100 years old,
'Cause the years have not been kind to you I know..."

The fact that I haven't listened to either one in three years and just spewed
those from memory... yikes. Johnette Napolitano has an unshakeable voice.

Carpet Crawlers (see my signature, by the way!). I'd be interested to know

Kate Bush - "The Man With The Child In His Eyes"

ooh i hear ya on the Johnette Napolitano... even though "True" is
basically a positive song, it always fills me with melancholy.

Another song that is oh so tragic is from "Les Miserables" there are two
different english versions, the London cast (which I prefer) and the
Broadway cast. Thankfully they kept Frances Ruffelle for both casts as
the super tragic Eponine. This is a song that you can belt out from
while playing it alone in your room (especially nice if you harbor
secret longings for someone that has another "thing" going on)

found these here

Les Miserables (London Cast)
On My Own
Eponine (Frances Ruffelle)

And now I'm all alone again
Nowhere to go, no one to turn to
I did not want your money, sir,
I came out here 'cos I was told to.
And now the night is near. Now I can make believe he's here.

Sometimes I walk alone at night when everybody else is sleeping.
I think of him and then I'm happy with the company I'm keeping.
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head.

On my own
Pretending he's beside me.
All alone I walk with him till morning.
Without him,
I feel his arms around me.
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me!

In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me for ever and forever.

And I know it's only in my mind,
That I'm talking to myself and not to him.
And although I know that he is blind,
Still I say, there's a way for us!

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone, the river's just a river
Without him the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere the streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life I've only been pretending
Without me his world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness that I have never known

I love him, I love him, I love him... but only on my own.

Right on, mamu, same here. Many a broken heart has been healed by the
power of music. Heck, even when I'm madly in love I cry at the drop of a hat.
Give you some idea of what a pathetic child *I* was, I practically wore out
my 45 of Ferrante and Teicher's "Theme from 'A Lonely Room' ", what a
depressing tune that is!

< snip most of mamu's sad tunes>

>"Wuthering Heights" by Pat Benetar

Oh dear God in heaven, how could you?! Kate Bush, hun, check her out,
her original version of this tune is a killer, Pat's just a Kate wannabe ;-)
I see where Mark Rae mentioned Kate's, "The Man With The Child In
His Eyes" and I agree wholeheartedly, wonderfully sad tune.

We did this thread a few months ago and I stick by what I wrote then.
At the risk of outing myself as a great big wuss, I'll admit that I have a
hard time listening to any of the late, great Harry Chapin's music without
crying like a baby. If the lyrics don't kill me, the fact that we'll never hear
from him again does. Nevermind the classic, "Cat's In The Cradle", or
"Taxi" (along with its heartbreaking followup, "Sequel"), there are so many
other beautiful songs this man brought to the world. Such as the killer tune,
"Story Of A Life", or the wonderful tale of a father watching his daughter grow
up too fast, "Tangled Up Puppet", or the unlikely and gorgeous song,
"Mail Order Annie" about a dirt farmer and the wife he sends away for.
Of course, "Mr. Tanner", the tale of a dry cleaner who sings like a dream.
"Circle" has to be heard to be appreciated, kills me every time.

And, sort of on topic, some of the messages I receive from Sesame
Street fans re: my website of lyrics and skits get the tears flowing.
Got a killer the other day from a father looking for a rainy day song he
remembered. Took me all of 5 minutes to find the song on the site and
send him the lyrics. The next morning's mail included his reply. Seems
when his daughter was born with multiple medical concerns the doctors
sent them home and told them to enjoy her as long as they could as
she wouldn't last long. Part of her therapy was to identify words with
a solid reference of some kind and they heard the rainy day song on
the show. He took his child outside and let the rain fall upon them as
he sang the song to make her understand what rain was. She would
laugh and start to dance in the rain. Just when I was preparing myself
for the inevitable sad postscript to this tale, he wrote that during the
previous evening's big rainstorm his now 18 year old daughter had
asked, "Daddy, sing me the rain song", which led him to me. She
had just left for school that morning with a printout of the lyrics and
the hope that it rained like cats and dogs. THIS is exactly why I put
blood, sweat and tears into a site that pays me nothing monetarily.
What more payment do you need?

Sorry that turned into a ramble, just thought I'd share.

Cheers,

TD

Interesting. I think of Everybody Hurts as a very uplifting song. It
talks about how people experience pain, but that everyeone does, and that if
we ride it out, it will be OK. At least that is what I get out of it.
That's one of the cool things about music (and poetry)--everybody gets
something different out of it:)

WILDFIRE
Michael Murphy

She comes down yellow mountain on a dark flat land she rides
On a pony she named Wildfire
With a whirlwind by her side
On a cold and drafty night

Oh they say she died one winter
When there came a chilling frost
And the pony she named Wildfire
Busted down his stall
In a blizzard he was lost
She ran calling Wildfire (3 times)

By the dark of the moon I planted
But there came an early snow
There's been a hoot owl howling outside my window now
For six nights in a row
She's coming for me I know
And on Wildfire we're both gonna go
We'll be riding Wildfire (3 times)

On Wildfire we're going to ride her
Gonna leave it all behind
Yes she's always shining right out of my mind
Riding Wildfire

Jeannie's Afraid Of The Dark

Dolly Parton/Porter Wagoner

Her two little feet would come running into
our bedroom almost every night.
Her soft little face would be wet from her tears
and her little heart pounding with fright.
She'd hold out her arms, then she'd climb in beside us,
in her small voice, we'd hear her remark,
"Mommie and Daddy, can I sleep here with you
'cause Jeannie's afraid of the dark".
One day in the summer, we took some flowers
to place on some old family graves.
Jeannie said, "Mommy, ain't it dark in the ground,
oh, Daddy, I'd be so afraid".
Then she looked up at her daddy and me
and said somethin' that broke both our hearts.
She said, "When I die, please don't bury me,
'cause Jeannie's afraid of the dark".

(Spoken by Porter while Dolly hums in the background)

Jeannie was always afraid of the dark
and we never could understand why.
'Cause we looked after Jeannie with the very best of care
Because Jeannie was our only child.
Perhaps it was death that she was so afraid of,
'cause it took her one dark stormy night.
I think we always knew that we'd never see Jeannie grown,
'cause it seemed she was destined to die.
But on Jeannie's grave, we placed an eternal flame
that glows and never loses its spark.
And on the darkest night, there's always a light,
'cause Jeannie's afraid of the dark.
(Sung by Dolly)
Our Jeannie's afraid of the dark

I can't believe you said that! I was the exact same way when I was little, and
everyone I've ever told that just thought it was cute and silly, but no one
ever said they felt the same way. The song made me obsess about my pets dying
if it snowed. Maybe that's why I live in Phoenix now...

(raising hand) Me too! Me too!

OK, maybe I didn't exactly cry about it, but it gave me ...
I dunno, a real creepy feeling. Same way I felt about the
good episodes of "Twilight Zone" or something.

And it always, for some reason, made me remember a story
I'd read in some "Reader's Digest" type anthology about a girl
who'd frozen to death in a blizzard and whose frozen body was
found between her house and the barn. So I didn't obsess about
any pets dying -- I obsessed about stringing a rope from the
house to the barn so such a thing couldn't ever happen to me ...

which was a real neat trick, considering I lived on the
second floor of a three-story home and that we would've
had to get into the car and drive for miles on the highway
in order to find the nearest barn!

Gah. Now I'm sitting here in the dark (well, except
for the light from the monitor) and I'm getting the creeps
all over again. Thanks a LOT, guys!

For me that song would be Someone Saved My Life Tonight by Elton John.
Around the time he wrote that song, Elton had been contemplating
suicide, including one incident in which he had stuck his head into a
gas oven and turned it on trying to kill himself. He wrote the song
based on his suicide attempts. The song (and the album it came off of
Capt. Fantastic and the BDC) was sheer genius, and to me it's sad that
such a masterpiece had to come from something as dramatic as that.

Ironically, the album Capt. Fantastic debuted at #1 on the Billboard
album charts, something no album up to that time had done.

I've never heard Jeannie's Afraid of the Dark... will someone post those
lyrics? (You call something a "wrist-cutter", and I must admit I am morbidly
interested...)

Oh, heard another sad one today that I forgot to put on the list: "Say Hello to
Heaven" by Temple of the Dog, though the *saddest* song on the entire album has
to be "Times of Trouble."

Temple of the Dog
"Times of Trouble"

When the spoon is hot
And the needle's sharp
And you drift away
I can hear you say
That the world in black
is upon your back
So you ditch away
And you close the shades

Don't try to do it
Don't try to kill your time
You might do it
But then you can't change your mind
You've got to hold on to your time
and break through these
Times of trouble

When you try to talk
And the words get hard
And they put you down
Don't you stay
Don't you ditch away

I saw you singing
Swinging your mother's sword
I know you're playin'
But sometimes the rules get hard

But if somebody left you
Out on a ledge
If somebody pushed you
Over the edge
If somebody *loved* you
And left you for dead
You gotta hold on to your time
and break through these
Times of trouble

This is becoming a very long thread, so I might add some I think.

The saddest song I know is George Michael's "A Different Corner".

The most depressing song is a different ballgame. That should be "The Times
They Are A-changing" by Bob Dylan. As a matter of fact I think any song by
Dylan is depressing, not so much from the contents as from the fact that it is
ever written and this clown still sells records. Worst of it all, he still
makes records. He just can't seem to shut up!
Imagine being over 50 years old (isn't he 60 already? He manages to look like
he is over 80) and still sound like a nagging child that can't have his way.
Makes my flesh creep. That is what I call depressing.

Got carried away a bit I believe. Sorry. Had to get this off my chest. Was at
some party yesterday and a half-drunk has-been hippie now well within executive
status decided that some Dylan would liven up the party. Time for me to make
like a tree and leave. I hate that S.O.B. He can't even play harp properly.

Ahem.... Sorry.

Okay this one is probably not from the same genre that most of you are drawing
from but I think that the saddest most depressing song is "Something I Can
Never Have" by Nine Inch Nails from 'Pretty Hate Machine'.

Adagio for Strings was also the music played at the funeral for Princess
Grace.
Always brings a lump to the throat.

My picks are:

Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton - the one that had news clips about the Susan
Smith case (around here in SC anyway)

18 and Life by Skid Row - first time I heard it, made me cry

Every Rose Has Its Thorn by Poison

Also, "Saved The Best For Last", not for the words, but because it was my
best friend and mine's song...we used to listen to that song over and over
and over...she moved that year, and it's always been our song, hopefully
I'll see her again soon, it's been 3 years...but I cry everytime I hear
it...
reminds me of the really good times...

Emma by Hot ChocolateĀ is about a suicide... the following excerpt from
the song says it all I suppose...

"It was a cold and dark December night
When I opened up the bedroom door
To find her lying still and cold
Upon the bed
A love letter lying on the bedroom floor
It read :
"Darling I love you,
But I just can't keep on living on dreams no more.
I tried so very hard not to leave you alone.
I just can't keep on trying no more."

This song speaks of those fears we all experience and eventually face
in life. I've posted the lyrics as many of you will not know or
remember this one unless you read the words or hear it again...

Rocky
Austin RobertsĀ
(Stevens)
-Austin collaborated on the 70's cartoon
series "Scooby Doo" and "Josie & the Pussycats".
# 9 in 1975

Alone until my eighteenth year
We met four springs ago
She was shy and had a fear
Of things she did not know
But we got it on together
In such a super way
We held each other close at night
And traded dreams each day

And she said,
"Rocky, I've never been in love before
Don't know if I can do it
But if you let me lean on you
Take my hand, I might get through it" (through it)
I said, "Baby, oh sweet baby
It's love that sets us free
And God knows if the world should end
Your love is safe with me"

We found an old gray house
And you would not believe the way
We worked at night to fix it up
Took classes in the day
Paintin' walls and sippin' wine
Sleepin' on the floor
With so much love for just two
Soon we found there'd be one more

And she said,
"Rocky, I've never had a baby before
Don't know if I can do it
But if you let me lean on you
Take my hand, I might get through it" (through it)
I said, "Baby, oh sweet baby
It's love that sets us free
And God knows if the world should end
Your love is safe with me"

We had lots of problems then but
We had lots of fun
Like the crazy party
When our baby girl turned one
I was proud and satisfied
Life had so much to give
'Till the day they told me
That she didn't have long to live

She said,
"Rocky, I've never had to die before
Don't know if I can do it..."

Now it's back to two again
The little girl and I
Who looks so much like her sweet mother
Sometimes it makes me cry
I sleep alone at nights again
I walk alone each day
And sometimes when I'm about to give in
I hear her sweet voice say, to me

"Rocky, you know you've been alone before
You know that you can do it
But if you'd like to lean on me
Take my hand, I'll help you through it" (through it)
I said, "Baby, oh sweet baby
It's love that sets us free
And I told you when the world would end
Your love was safe with me"

She said,
"Rocky, you know you've been alone before
You know that you can do it
But if you'd like to lean on me...
