Hi to all,
Cher came out with a CD in 1995 called "It's a mans world", the first song
is 'Walking in Memphis'.

Chorus: Walking in Memphis --
walking with my feet ten feet of the Beal(?)
etc.

Is this referring to a Beal Street in Memphis?

Is there a Trivia freak out there who could please explain this for me?

Thanx in advance.

See u l8ter,
.dave.

I think, no, I'm sure, Cher is covering the song "Walking in
Memphis." Does anyone know who was the original artist?

BTW, Beale street is an amazing blues & bar area in downtown
Memphis. Visit if you get the chance.

It was originally done by Marc Cohn.

The Song "Walking in Memphis" was recorded and written by Mark
Cohn. It appears on his album "Marc Cohn" - GREAT album!

I had no idea Cher recorded it. I'll have to check it out!

WALKING IN MEMPHIS

Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
WC Handy - won't you look down over me
Yeah I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy can be

Then I'm walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel

Saw the ghost of Elvis
On Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
Then I watched him walk right through
Now security they did not see him
They just hovered 'round his tomb
But there's a pretyy little thing
Waiting for the King
Down in the Jungle Room

(Chorus)

They've got catfish on the table
They've got gospel in the air
And Reverend Green be glad to see you
When you haven't got a prayer
But boy you've got a prayer in Memphis

Now Muriel plays piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would--
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
And she said--
"Tell me are you a Christian child?"
And I said "Ma'am I am tonight"

(Chorus)

Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain

Howdy!

Yes, it's true.
Walking in Memphis has been recorded by Cher on her last album. But please
don't ask me wha it's called.

You've got to check it out, anyway. She built in some nice gospel & soul
elements I really like!

Anyway, many thanks for the lyrics!

The original artist was Marc Cohn. But nobody answered the question--what is
he saying? "Walking with my ? ten feet off of ??"

Marc Cohn, on his self-titled album released in 1991.

"Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beal (or Beel)"

That's what they said in an English teaching programme on the BBC
World Service. "Beal" (or whatever way it is spelled) is a steet's
name.

Yes, Cher is covering that wonderful song.
It was originally written by Marc Cohn

Hi Dave!

The lyrics you requested are

'Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale'

As I got to know till now, Beale Street is something like a main street
(in Memphis ...) with several groovy bars and clubs on it. Has to be very
interesting (never been there myself).

Hope this helps.

In case you haven't heard the original from 1991, it's on Marc Cohn's
self titled debut (?). Check this one out, not a weak song on the
album, and a cameo by James Taylor (bgv's only...)

I haven't heard Cher's version, but not being a Cher fan, I'd have to
biasedly say that Marc's version blows hers away, but that's just my
opinion. It's a great song either way...

Beale St is widely recognized as the birthplace of Blues music in
nightclubs and on record. It was there that W.C Handy (washes down over
me) First became famous and in doing so made the blues acceptable.
B.T.W. BB King stands for "Beale St Blues King" which was quite an
honour in the roaring twenties...

Hope this helps...

The song was written by Marc Cohn, and originally appeared on his debut
album in 1991 or 2, as I recall. The guy's brilliant, as is the song.

Put on my blue suede shoes and I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the delta blues \

In the middle of the pouring rain

WC Handy, won't you look down over me
Yeah, I got a first-class ticket but I'm as blue as a boy can be

Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis, but do I really feel the way I feel

Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues

In the middle of the pouring rain.

Cher tried this? Say it ain't so.

"Beale" refers to Beale street; "Reverend Green" is the great Al Green,
soul-singer turned preacher; the identity of "Muriel" is a mystery, to
me anyway; "Elvis" is a successful American singer of the late 50s who
entered the army in 1959 and was never heard from again [:-)>]
