when liberty valance came to town
the women folk would hide
they'd hide
when liberty val ance walked around
the men would step aside
because the point of a gun
was the only law that liberty understood
when it came to shooting
straight and fast
he was mighty good
from out of the east a stranger came
a law book in his hand
a man the kind of man
the west would need to ease a troubled land
because the point of a gun
was the only law that liberty understood
when it came to shooting
straight and fast
he was mighty good
many a man would face his gun
and many a man would fall
the man who shot liberty valance
he shot liberty valance
he was the bravest of them all
now the love of a woman can make a man
stay on when he should go
stay on
just trying to build a peaceful life
where love is free to go
but the point of a gun
was the only law that liberty understood
when it came to shooting
straight and fast
he was mighty good
alone and afraid she prayed that he'd
return that fateful night
that night
when nothing she said could keep her man
from going out to fight
but the point of a gun
was the only law that liberty understood
when the final showdown came to pass
a law book was no good
out in the sun two shots rang out
the shots made liberty fall
the man who shot liberty valance
he shot liberty valance
he was the bravest of them all

With all possible respect to the other two posters, let me humbly submit
my version. I have gone back and carefully re-listened to the song on
CD and I *swear* that:
1. The love of a girl can make a man stay ON but not HOME.
2. "The womenfolk would hide, THEY'D hide" and *not* "the womenfolk
would hide, they WOULD hide."
3. He was the "kind of a man the West would need to TAME (not ease) a
troubled land"
4. And certainly, it didn't happen that "out in the sun two shots rang
out." The line is clearly "everyone heard two shots ring out."
Perhaps my friends were doing this from memory or maybe Gene recorded
several different versions???

When Liberty Valance rode to town the womenfolk would hide, they’d hide
When Liberty Valance walked around the men would step aside
‘cause the point of a gun was the only law that Liberty understood
When it came to shootin’ straight and fast---he was mighty good.
>From out of the East a stranger came, a law book in his hand, a man
The kind of a man the West would need to tame a troubled land
‘cause the point of a gun was the only law that Liberty understood
When it came to shootin’ straight and fast---he was mighty good.
Many a man would face his gun and many a man would fall
The man who shot Liberty Valance, he shot Liberty Valance
He was the bravest of them all.
The love of a girl can make a man stay on when he should go, stay on
Just tryin’ to build a peaceful life where love is free to grow
But the point of a gun was the only law that Liberty understood
When the final showdown came at last, a law book was no good.
Alone and afraid she prayed that he’d return that fateful night, aww that night
When nothin’ she said could keep her man from goin’ out to fight
>From the moment a girl gets to be full-grown the very first thing she learns
When two men go out to face each other only one retur-r-r-ns
Everyone heard two shots ring out, a shot made Liberty fall
The man who shot Liberty Valance, he shot Liberty Valance
He was the bravest of them all.
The man who shot Liberty Valance, he shot Liberty Valance
He was the bravest of them all.

Vicki:
Assuming my memory is correct:
Original record was by Gene Pitney. Later covered by James Taylor.
Something like:
He's the man who shot (sound of gunshot) Liberty Valance
He shot Liberty Vallance
It's named after a character in the movie named "The Man Who Shot... "
(you can guess the rest of the movie title, I bet!).
For me it's that gunshot sound effect that sticks in my head.
Hope some or all of the above is correct and somebody else can supply
lyrics.
Neil
I agree with all but number four. I'm only familiar with the version sung by James
Taylor, but it matches all of the lyrics posted except for number four. I'm sure it was
"Out in the STREET two shots rang out." It sounds better to me anyway. :)

ObTrivia: But who played 'the Man who shot Liberty Valance'

Any fool can tell the truth,
But it requires a man of some sense to know how to lie well.
