"Running Bear" was a #1 hit for Johnny Preston in 1959. According to
Joel Whitburn in "The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits", it was written by
J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper). However, this same song was covered by
The Guess Who on their 1972 album "Rockin'" and the song-writer credit
on the record label says "Herdman". I don't know which is right.

I found these lyrics in the newsgroup and can't vouch for their
accuracy.

RUNNING BEAR

On the bank of the river stood Running Bear, young Indian brave
On the other side of the river stood his lovely Indian maid
Across the river he could see her, what a lovely sight to see
But their tribes, they fought each other so their love could never be

Running Bear loved Little White Dove with a love big as the sky
Running Bear loved Little White Dove with a love that wouldn't die

He couldn't swim the raging river 'cause the river was too wide
He couldn't reach his Little White Dove, waiting on the other side
In the moonlight he could see her blowing kisses across the waves
Her little heart was beating faster, waiting for her Indian brave

Running Bear loved Little White Dove with a love big as the sky
Running Bear loved Little White Dove with a love that wouldn't die

Running Bear dove in the water, Little White Dove did the same
As they swam out to each other through the swirling stream they came
As their hands touched and their lips met, the raging river pulled them
down
Now they'll always be together in that happy hunting ground

Running Bear loved Little White Dove with a love big as the sky
Running Bear loved Little White Dove with a love that wouldn't die

Running Bear was indeed written by the Big Bopper, who also provided the
Indian sounds on the Preston version. This song was also a country hit
for Sonny James. There was also a parody version called "Running Bare"
but I don't remember who did that one.

A parody of Running Bear was put out by the comedy singers Homer and
Jethro. It wouldn't be politically correct today, but I think the song
started out with the words, "Runnin Bear and Little Clubfoot."
