Hi,
Can someone please tell me the artist and song title of this one song
where the woman says "do do do do" throughout the whole song, and the tune
to it goes along with that phrase. It is driving me crazy, and I would
really appreciate your help.
Thank you
Chris

You'd think somebody who purports to be speaking for an alleged
radio station would get their FACTS straight, wouldn't you?
"Tom's Diner" first appeared on the *SOLO* Suzanne Vega album
Solitude Standing, her second album, released in April of 1987.
(She had written the song in 1982). The DNA remix was released
three years later, in 1990, without her knowledge or permission.
Here's a quote from Suzanne Vega herself, talking about the remix:
"...If I thought it was bad I would have sued them (DNA).
But I thought it was funny and inventive and I never dreamed
that it would be a big hit. And I was really happy when
I realized that it was going to an audience that is normally
not my audience.
...I get letters from people. They hate DNA. My feeling is,
why not experiment. If you hate that, if you hate "Tom's Diner"
by DNA then don't listen. Go back to SOLITUDE STANDING. It still
exists in the original form. There's no reason to get hysterical.
People feel upset but I don't feel that way. I think it's fun..."
And another quote:
"Many of you heard the "DNA featuring Suzanne Vega" remix of
"Tom's Diner" that was out last year, and most of you know the
story. Two enterprising young men from England calling themselves
DNA sampled the song from Solitude Standing, added a dance
track, and released it on a bootleg record as "Oh Suzanne".
Within three days the record company swooped down and apprehended
them. "What shall we do?" they asked me. "Let's release it as
a single," I said, and so they did.
She released a compilation album called "Tom's Album" in September
of 1991 which included the following covers of the song, as well as
a few other selections:
D.N.A. featuring Suzanne Vega: Rusted Pipe (remix)
Suzanne Vega: Tom's Diner
Peter Behrens: Dep De Do Dep
Nikki D.: Daddy's Little Girl
Vocal by Beth Watson: Waiting At the Border
Michigan & Smiley: Tom's Diner
N.D.A. Project: Tom's Diner
Marilyn E. Whitelaw & Mark Davis: Jeannie's Diner
After One: Tom's Diner Rap
Mats Hojer: Tages Kafe
Bingo Hand Job: Tom's ?
Suzanne Vega: Tom's Diner (Reprise)
D.N.A. featuring Suzanne Vega: Tom's Diner (remix)

Y'know what, though? I don't think we've heard back yet from the
original poster about whether or not "Tom's Diner" was the song
they were thinking of. Remember, all they said what that the words
were something like "do do do do do" sung by a woman and repeated
throughout the song. Now, that immediately made me think it had to
be "Tom's Diner", but I guess there's probably a few other songs
that would fit that general description too.

(You know, the song with SUZANNE VEGA singing ALL BY HERSELF)?
Nanc... you rock!

Good to see you, Johnny. It's been a while. Don't be
such a stranger around here -- after all, it's mostly
a friendly group. Well, except for a certain AOL'er who
just doesn't GET it, that is.

Well...let's just say that I was dragged outta the wormholes by a certain
worm who shall remain nameless...but it was Mostly Nancy's immediate
doing...with a LOT of prodding from (will you be my) mamu...coupled with an
undying lust for that woman with the Irish Protestant name...
But who gives a flying flutterby (note: "five" does NOT rhyme with "mine,"
folks)...the point is, no matter how much time I have to be the Barney, I am
SO happy to be here...and I swear and affirm and pledge perverse allegiance
to do my best to Elvis, my country (I live in the US but my country is the
UK, no matter whether they know it or not), to preserve, protect, and defend
the ears of anyone who thinks they know the Mondegreens of the world....and
expose them to the correct words to whatever lyric (one lyric...one
song...y'all know me) they prefer...
H'mmm...was that a bit over the top?

How about a meeting at Bellm's/Horne's "Cars and Music of Yesteryear" in
Sarasota, FL? Sounds useful to me...

Sounds intriguing but extremely un-doable to me ...
but it does make me wonder: Whereabouts (in general)
are the bunch of us pseudo-regulars from, anyway?
I'm from New England (Massachusetts, actually). JohnnyO,
I know from previous correspondence that you don't live
too far away from my sister in Kain-tucky ... how about any
other of the regulars? Where are you guys?

Southcentral PA here--40 miles North of Baltimore.
I'm like, ya know, from San Diego, California (even though for some
reason I occasionally tawk like a New Englandah, dahlinks)
I, of course, think the best place for the road trip is... DISNEYLAND! yahoo!
Actually, The San Diego Zoo is more representative of this group :)

Where? Where are those Tuckers? Maybe they are kin to my hubby's
ex-wife's new husband. No kidding. I married a Tuck whose ex-wife later
married a Tucker!! But I think they stick to videos.
Harley and I would be flattered to be included even if it's some other
Tucks you had in mind.

Nope. Y'all guys are the only Tucks, Tuckers, Tuckahoes,
or any other variation thereof that I could *possibly*
have been thinking of, and I humbly beg your forgiveness
for the mangling of your name.
Now be nice and forgive me, or I'll get my friends

Nancy, it could have been horribly worse. And the two keys aren't far
apart on the keyboard.

Not that, please, please. I forgive, I forgive.
Just to be lyrical++ Who had the hit "Still the One" in the 70's?
like "You're still the one, who can scratch my itch" No, no no Shania
Twain -that's a different song. Today is our 7th anniversary and we can
remember the song but not who sang it.

But why diss mondegreens?? They are SO MUCH fun... sometimes better
than the proper lyric... ;<) (In "Killer Queen", for example, I am
sure that "Got mind-activity" is an improvement on the correct
"Gunpowder, gelatine"...)
I know there must be N*10^6 people who agree with this point of view,

Since I believe those were originally my words, not Bunty's, I thought I
ought to say that I was not dissing Mondegreens...I LOVE them, and I even do
what I can to pervert song lyrics of my own. My point, made in regard to
the errors in posted (supposedly accurate) lyrics is that each posting of a
Mondegreen within a lyric cheapens the work of the lyricist, and makes
people believe that an error is accurate. I mean, I may sing "there's
something about her halo and mine," and be perfectly happy with it, but I
need not foist that upon someone who wants to know the CORRECT lyric, and
for me to do so is to perpetuate a falsehood, pervert the author's
intentions, and fail to educate thanks to my incorrect communication..
Mondegreens ARE fun (bet I've already got you trying to figure out the above
line; hints: British, early '70s), but they are fun only if the correct
lyrics are known and are knowable. I will still pledge myself to wipe out
Mondegreens WITHIN supposedly accurate transcriptions of lyrics.
Just ask mamu...she claims I'm still in charge of "quality control"...

I currently live close to the route 95/128 belt, even though I'm new

Please insert clever statement here.
>there's something about her halo and mine
Now that would be "Love knows (Where my Rosemary goes)" I think...
And I think the real lyric was
There's somethin' about her hand holdin' mine
....and on the point of the thread, the Mondegren is the superior lyric. Just
as introducing the mysterious Lady Mondegren spiced up an otherwise
unremarkable poem. But I agree with JohnnyO - the internet shouldn't just be
about spreading disinformation.
