I'm writing an essay concerned with love and I would like to know who wrote
and sang the following lyrics as well as where I might find the entire set.

"How do you do what you do to me? If I only knew. If I knew how
you did it to me, then I'd do it to you."

Thanks,

Marshall

The title is "How Do You Do It" and Brit-invasion group Gerry and the
Pacemakers took it to #9 in 1964. My reference book says the words and
music were written by one Mitch Murray.

And of course it bears mentioning that this was producer George
Martin's original choice for the Beatles' followup to "Love Me Do"
(they did a somewhat halfhearted version, then did "Please Please
Me")...The Beatles recording is on Anthology 1 and numerous bootlegs.

HOW DO YOU DO IT?
Gerry and the Pacemakers

How do you do what you do to me?

I wish I knew
If I knew how you do it to me

I'd do it to you

How do you do what you do to me?
I'm feeling blue
Wish I knew how you do it to me
But I haven't a clue

You give me a feeling in my heart
Like an arrow passin' through it
Suppose that you think you're very smart
But won't you tell me how do you do it?

How do you do what you do to me?
If I only knew

Then perhaps you'd fall for me
Like I fell for you

------ piano solo ------

You give me a feeling in my heart
Like an arrow passin' through it
Suppose that you think you're very smart
But won't you tell me how do you do it?

How do you do what you do to me?
If I only knew

Then perhaps you'd fall for me
Like I fell for you
When I do it to you

Thanks so very much to Jen and all the others who responded by e-mail
to my request. (Now I can continue on with my paper!)

Some folks were sure that Freddie and the Dreamers also recorded this
song. I guess the important point, as one respondent noted, is that
the lyrics were written by Mitch Murray. Afterall, I will only be
quoting the lyrics and not the music in my manuscript.

Is it really possible that no-one pointed out that the Beatles recorded
this song (it's on Anthology I)? After "Love Me Do", they were asked to
record it for their second single. They thought it was too "cutesy", and
produced "Please Please Me" instead (which of course took them to #1 for the
first time).

If you're looking for a recording (doubtful, given Jen's generosity),
the Beatles' would certainly be the easiest to find.
