I'd like to know the lyric of ` Oh, beautiful ' ( it's the title,
right ? ) The song is like 2nd anthem for America.
thanks in advance.
>The correct title is "America the Beautiful" and the first verse is:
>Oh beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain
>For purple mountain's majesty above the fruited plain
>America, America, God shed his grace on thee
>And crown thy good with brotherhood
>>From sea to shining sea.
There's at least one other verse:
Oh beautiful, for heroes proved, in liberating strife.
Who more than self, their country loved,
And mercy more than life.
America, America, may God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness,
And every gain divine.
I learned these off the Ray Charles bluesy version, and if I remember
correctly all the lyrics are readily available on the Web.

----------------------------
Oh beautiful for spacious skies
For amber waves of grain
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain
America, America,
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea
---------------------------
That's the first verse
It's actually called "America the Beautiful"
Lyrics by Katharine Lee Bates
Music by Samuel A. Ward
There are three other verses, too, less
commonly known:
----------------------------
Oh beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness
America, America,
God mend thine every flaw
Confirm thy soul in self-control
Thy liberty in law
----------------------------
Oh beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life
America, America,
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine
----------------------------
Oh beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears
America, America,
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea
----------------------------
Hope this helps.
(BTW -- am I the only one who thought that line in
the first verse was "purple mountains' majesty" ???)
I had to look up the song to get the 2nd, 3rd, 4th verses,
and was surprised to discover that I didn't even really
know the first verse correctly!!
Nancy G.
you learn something new every day, I guess ...
> Oh beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain
> For purple mountain's majesty above the fruited plain
A-HA! See? I'm not the only one!!! (grin)
For those who haven't seen my other note yet ... I posted the
lyrics to this song too. But in the process of looking up the
words to the second, third, and fourth verses I discovered
that the line from the first verse, quoted above, is actually
... purple mountain majesties ...
and I wondered if anyone else thought, as I always had,
that it was "purple mountain's majesty."
Guess so.

... trying to figure out why it makes people feel better to
make a mistake if other people make it too ...
