Hi,
need the lyrics of the song by Tom Waits. I got here the Rod Stewart
Version and it's very hard to understand Rod's voice.

Thanks

Yeah- there are a few lines/words that I can't get- I've put question marks in
front of them...

Downtown Train

Outside another yellow moon
Has punched a hole in the night time mist.
I climb to the window and down to the street
I'm shining like a new dime.

The downtown trains are full,
Full of all them Brooklyn girls.
They try so hard to break out of their little world
You wave your hand and they scatter like bugs,
They're nothing that will ever capture your heart.
They're just the thorns without the rose,
Be careful of them in the dark.

Oh if I was the one
You chose to be your only one
Oh baby can't you hear me now,
Can't you hear me now.
When I seee you tonight on a downtown train
Every night, every night is just the same
On a downtown train.

I know your window and I know it's late,
I know your stairs and your doorway.
I walk down your street and past your gate
I stand by the light of the foyer.
And watch them as they fall,
?They're having a heart attack (hard ???)
?They scare at the carnival but they'll never win you back.

When I see you tonight on a downtown train
Every night, every night it's just the same
You leave me lonely
When I seee you tonight on a downtown train
Alll my dreams, all my dreams fall like rain,
On a downtown train.

When I see you tonight on a downtown train
Every night, every night is just the same
When I see you tonight on a downtown train
All my dreams, all my dreams fall like rain
On a downtown train.
On a downtown train.
All my dreams fall like rain
On a downtown train.

Outside another yellow moon
Has punched a hole in the nighttime, yes
I climb through the window and down to the street

I'm shining like a new dime

The downtown trains are full with all of those Brooklyn girls
They try so hard to break out of their little worlds

Well you wave your hand and they scatter like crows
They have nothing that will ever capture your heart
They're just thorns without the rose

Be careful of them in the dark

Oh, if I was the one you chose to be your only one
Oh baby can't you hear me now, can't you hear me now

Will I see you tonight on a downtown train
Every night it's just the same, you leave me lonely now

I know your window and I know it's late

I know your stairs and your doorway

I walk down your street and past your gate

I stand by the light at the four-way
You watch them as they fall, oh baby, they all have heart attacks
They stay at the carnival, but they'll never win you back

Will I see you tonight on a downtown train
Where every night, every night it's just the same, oh baby
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train
All of my dreams they fall like rain, oh baby on a downtown train

Will I see you tonight on a downtown train
Where every night, every night it's just the same, oh baby
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train
All of my dreams just fall like rain, all on a downtown train
All on a downtown train, all on a downtown train
All on a downtown train, a downtown train

PS: Get "Rain Dogs" and listen to the original version; IMO, is
far better

Those lyrics are exactly correct.

I have both CDs (Rod Stewart's Downtown Train CD from the
Storyteller Anthology as well as Rain Dogs). I just listened to Rain Dogs
and the questionable lyrics are indeed easier to understand, but
I really like Rod Stewart's version (BTW- I thought I'd heard that he beat Bob
Seger to the punch on recording Downtown Train).

Then again, I like the various covers on "Step Right Up: The Songs of Tom
Waits," which I guess is also blasphemy :>

Me too.

Hey, that's cool, whichever you prefer, right? I didn't know Seger had
recorded a version. Do you know what year, album?

Now you're getting it :) !

Same here!
