That would be "Mr. Custer" recorded by Larry Verne in 1960

I think you're talking about "A Company of Cowards."

Sorry, but I don't recall who performed it, but I like it.

It is called "Please, Mr. Custer" but the name of the artist just won't
come to mind.

It sounds like "Some Fool Made A Soldier of Me" by the Kingston Trio. The chorus went
something like this:

"Some fool made a soldier of me - rock hard
In the riding rough cavalry
I got a pretty gal waiting for me
While I'm stuck here in the army
Some fool made a soldier of me."

The story in the song ends just as they reach Little Bighorn.

I may be able to transcribe the rest for ya if you need it and if it's the right song.
I hope it helps you out some.

No, this is definitely "Mr. Custer" by Larry Verne. It's kind of a
back-and-forth thing between a general narration (chorus of male voices)
and the (mostly spoken) pleadings of a young soldier. I held off
posting because I thought someone might come through with the
"authoritative" lyrics.

Here's as much of it as I can remember, parts I don't know marked with
(something):

NARRATION:
That famous day in history, the men of the seventh cavalry went riding
on,
And from the rear a voice was heard, a thin young voice, but his
trembling words rang loud and clear.

SOLDIER:
(spoken) What am I doing here?

Please Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go
Hey Mr. Custer, please don't make me go
I had a dream last night, about the coming fight
Somebody yelled 'attack,' and there I stood with an arrow in my back
Hey Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go

(Indian yell)

(spoken) Ohhhhh
Look at them bushes out there--they movin'.
And there's an injun behind every one.
Hey Mr. Custer? You mind if I be excused the rest of the afternoon?
Hey Charlie! Duck your head!
(arrow sound)
Well, you're a little bit late on that one, Charlie.
Hoo, I bet that smarts.

NARRATION:
They were sure of victory, the men of the seventh cavalry, as they rode
on
But then from the rear a voice was heard, that same young voice, and his
trembling words rang loud and clear.

SOLDIER:
(spoken) What am I doing here?

Hey Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go.
Listen Mr. Custer, please don't make me go.
There's a redskin waitin' out there, he's fixin' to take my hair.
(something) 'cause I don't wanna wind up dead or bald.
Hey Mr. Custer, please don't make me go.

(Indian yell)

(spoken) Ohhhhh.

(something)
Hey, I wonder what the Indian word for friend is. Kemosabe, that's it.
'Kemosabe! Hey out there, kemosabe!'
(arrow sounds)
Well, that ain't it.
(something else)
(arrow sounds)

Corrections, fill-in-the-blanks welcome.

I have a cut listed as simply "Mr. Custer" and it's by Larry Berne.

(War whoops in background ... ooga chucka, ooga chucka ..)

(Men's chorus in background)
That famous day in history the men
of the 7th cavalry went riding on

And from the rear a voice was heard,

a brave young man with a trembling word
rang loud and clear:

"What am I doing here?"

(Soldier sings)
Please, Mr. Custer, I don't want to go,
Hey, Mr. Custer, please don't make me go,

I had a dream last night,

about the coming fight,
Somebody yelled, "Attack",
and there I stood with a arrow in my back,
Please Mr. Custer, I don't want to go.

Voice: "Forward ... Ho!"

(Spoken)
(Whine) look at them bushes out there ... they're movin.
& There's a injun behind ever one of 'em.

Hey Mr. Custer? You mind if I be
excused the rest of the afternoon?

Hey Charlie, duck your head. (Ffffft!)
Hm, a little bit late on that

one, Charlie.
Hoo, I bet that smarts.

(Men's chorus in background)

They were sure of victory, the men of

the seventh cavalry as they rolled on
And then from the rear a voice was heard,
that same brave voice with a trembling word,
rang loud and clear:
"What am I doin' here?"

(Soldier sings)
Please, Mr. Custer, I don't want to go,
Listen, Mr. Custer, please don't make me go,

There's a redskin waitin out there

fixin to take my hair
A coward I'm being called

'cause I don't wanna wind up dead or bald

Please Mr. Custer, I don't want to go

Voice: "Forward ... Ho!"

(Spoken)
(Whine) I wonder what the injun word for friend is?
Say friend. Kemo sabe, that's it.
(Yell)Kemo Sabe! Hey out there, Kemo Sabe!
(Ffffft!) Nope, that isn't it.
Look at them out there. Runnin around like a
bunch of wild indians. Heh, heh.
Nah, this is no time for jokin' ...

(Ffffft!) (Ffffft!) (Fft! Fft!)

You're right, Bo...
Here's the lyrics as transcribed just last night!

Mr. Custer
Larry Verne

That famous day in history

The men of the Seventh Cavalry went riding on.

And from the rear a voice was heard

A brave young man with a trembling word rang loud and clear.

"What am I doin' here?"

Please, Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go.
Hey, Mr. Custer, please don't make me go.

I had a dream last night

About this comin' fight
Somebody yelled attack
And there I stood with a arrow in my back.
Please, Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go,
(Forward ho!) No.

Them bushes out there, they're movin'
They's a Injun behind ever one.
Hey, Mr. Custer, you mind if I be excused the rest of the afternoon?
Hey, Charlie, duck your head! (Sound of an arrow going by)
No... you're a little bit late on that one, Charlie.
Whoooo, I'll bet that smarts!

They were sure of victory
The men of the seventh cavalry as they rode on.
Again from the rear a voice was heard
That same brave voice with a trembling word rang loud and clear.

"What am I doin' here?"

Please, Mr. Custer, I don't wanna go.
Listen, Mr. Custer, please don't make me go.

There's a redskin waitin' out there

Fixin' to take my hair
A coward I've been called
'Cause I don't want to wind up dead or bald.
Please, Mr. Custer, I don't want to go.
(Forward ho!) No.

I wonder what the Injun word for friend is?
Let's see... friend... Kemo Sabe, that's it!
"Kemo Sabe! Hey out there! Kemo Sabe! (Sound of an arrow going by)

Nope, that isn't it.

Look at 'em out there, runnin' around like a bunch of wild Indians
Ha ha ha... Naw, this ain't no time for jokin'.
(Sound of arrow....several arrows)

I think it's called something like "Please Mr. Custer" by a guy named
Larry Verne. He also did a similar song called "Hey Mr. Livingston!"
about Dr. Livingston and Stanley.

Don't remember all the words but a few snatches come to mind:

Please Mr. Custer

I don't wanna go

(Forward Ho!) No!

Listen Mr. Custer:
Please don't make me go

I had a dream last night

About the coming fight
Somebody yelled "Attack!"
And there I stood with an arrow in mah back!

etc.
