Subject: HELP: Lyrics/Titles That Mention Other Performers/Groups
From: rep...@twcny.rr.com (The RepoMan)
Date: Sun, Jun 6, 1999 04:43 EDT
Message-id: <375a2641.54043360@news-server>

I am requesting your help in compiling a list of song lyrics and
titles that mention other performers or groups. Examples are:

Titles:

"Jackie Wilson Said"
(Van Morrison)

"Roll Over, Beethoven"
(Chuck Berry)

"Don Henley Must Die"
(Mojo Nixon, not to overlook his
"Bring Me The Head Of David Geffen"
or
"Debby Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child")

Lyrics:

". . .Frank Zappa and the Mothers
Were at the best place around . . ."
(Deep Purple in "Smoke on the Water")

". . . I hope Neil Young will remember,
A Southern man don't need him around anyhow . . ."
(Lynyrd Skynyrd in "Sweet Home Alabama")

Interestingly, Mojo Nixon also wrote
"Elvis is Everywhere",
while Frank Zappa performs an instrumental titled
"Elvis Has Left the Building".

Less well known is the fact that then-20-year-old Ludwig von
Beethoven, having completed the funeral cantata on the death of Holy
Roman Emperor Joseph II in 1790, lightened up long enough to write
"Elvis Won't Even Be Born for Another Hundred and Forty-Five Years
Yet".

;-)

But I think the REAL examples above should illustrate what I'm looking
for.

I would appreciate ANY references that the readers of this group can
provide, even if it's "I think the Inkspots sang one that mentioned
Paul Whiteman's Orchestra in 1946 or so . . ."

If you can supply a source or a URL, great, but ANY leads would help
me out. I'll mention you on my web page when the project gets enough
material.

Send 'em to me,
The RepoMan

The lyrics mention Beck, Hanson, Courtney Love (from the Seattle-based rock
band Hole), and Marilyn Manson.

There is also the Barenaked Ladies' song "Bryan Wilson" : "I'm lying in bed/
Just like Bryan Wilson did..."

I believe some Rap music (not really my thing) has "diss" references to
other artists; wasn't this an issue when Tupac and Biggie Smalls were
killed?

There was a NY "house music" club hit about 5 years ago by someone with the
last name Fuentes titled "If Madonna calls (I'm not here)".
Not sure if you want this: The artists aren't named but their music is. Johnny
Rivers in song Summer Rain from late 60's sings: "...and everybody kept on
playin' Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band..."
Not sure if you wnat this either but John Lennon sings "I don't believe in
Beatles" in one of his SOLO recordings which, after namimg many things he
doesn't believe in, he ends: "I just believe in me."
Also, I don't have lyrics to Mamas and Papas' "I love rock and roll music" but
I'll bet there's something for you there.
FYI: There are many hard-core rap recordings with other rappers "dissed" by
name, but you'll have to consult a rap expert to identify them

Just remembered: Allanah Miles (Myles?) in Black Velvet sings of "...Jimmy
Rogers on the Victrola..."

Another comes to mind: In the fadeout of Captain and Tenille"s Love Will Keep
Us Together (BIG hit of mid '70's) they sing (Neil) "Sedaka is back"....but it
may not count since I think he wrote the song for them.

Sedaka did write "Love Will Keep Us Together", but if "Captain"'s
recollections on TV are to be believed, Sedaka didn't write it for
Captain and Tenille. He was singing it at his own gigs, they
heard it, and they liked it.

Spider Web by Joan Osborne: "I dreamed about Ray Charles last night, that
he could see just fine."

Nightshift by the Commodores "Jackie, hey whatcha' doin' now?"....."Marvin
he was a friend of mine."

The Ballad of John and Yoko- The Beatles (Yoko wasn't a Beatle, so I guess
this song fits the description.)

I'm Missing You- Diana Ross
"As I look around I see things that remind me...Just to see your smile
made my heart fill with joy....I still recall all those things we shared
together, where did you run to boy?"
"I'm missing you" was written for Marvin Gaye in the wake of his death.

Reasons To Be Beautiful by Hole "Named a star for your eyes did you freeze,
did you weep, turn to gold, baby sleep." Apparently Courtney Love wrote
this one for Kurt Cobain, according to speculation.

Let Me In by R.E.M. -----Lead singer Michael Stipe said on MtV that he
wrote this song for Kurt Cobain of Nirvana when Stipe began to feel like
"we were loosing him."

A piece on trivia on the song - it inspired the title of Joy
Division's classic "Love Will Tear Us Apart Again".
