I'm not sure about the second line of the first (and third) verse.
If you catch it and it's different, please post here. It sounds as
if he's saying "itselves" or "yourselves" instead of "itself," so
maybe that word before is not "grace"...(?)
Candle in the Wind
Sept. 6, 1997 - Elton John - for Princess Diana
1. Goodbye England's rose, may you ever grow in our hearts,
You were the grace that placed itself where lives were torn apart,
You called out to our county, and you whispered to those in pain,
Now you belong to Heaven, and the stars spell out your name.
And it seems to me you've lived your life like a candle in the wind,
Never fading with the sunset when the rain set in,
And your footsteps will always fall here along England's greenest
hills,
Your candle's burned out long before your legend ever will.
2. Loveliness we've lost, those empty days without your smile,
This torch we'll always carry for our nation's golden child,
Even tho' we try, the truth brings us to tears,
All our words cannot express the joy you've brought us through the
years.
And it seems to me you've lived your life like a candle in the wind,
Never fading with the sunset when the rain set in,
And your footsteps will always fall here along England's greenest
hills,
Your candle's burned out long before your legend ever will.
3. Goodbye England's rose, may you ever grow in our hearts,
You were the grace that placed itself where lives were torn apart,
Goodbye English rose, from the country lost without your soul,
Who miss the wings of your compassion more than you will ever know.
And it seems to me you've lived your life like a candle in the wind,
Never fading with the sunset when the rain set in,
And your footsteps will always fall here along England's greenest
hills,
Your candle's burned out long before your legend ever will.

I am also uncertain about this line. I've listened to it dozens of times,
trying to figure out what he's singing, and it sounds to me like
"yourselves". Unfortunately, this doesn't make a great deal of sense.
Aside from my own transcription which is available at the URLs in my
signature, yours is the first attempt I've seen to accurately transcribe
what Elton John sang at the funeral as opposed to what he was *supposed* to
sing according to the royal website at http://www.Royal.gov.uk and the
pre-funeral announcement at http://cnn.com. These sites and all other web
sites and newsgroup postings of the lyrics that I've seen so far, show the
line as "You were the grace that placed itself where lives were torn apart".
Makes sense, but it sure doesn't sound like what Elton sang at the funeral.
If nobody comes up with anything better, I'm sticking with "grace that
placed yourself" and assuming that Elton, who must have been under an
enormous amount of pressure given the circumstances, made the word plural by
mistake.

I think the last two lines should be:
Goodbye England's rose, from the country lost without your soul
^^^^^^^^^
Who'll miss the wings of your compassion more than you will ever know
