I dont remember Cockers version varying much lyrically from the Boxtops
version, it mainly varies in the phrasing and ad libs, Example:

BoxTops (as transcribed below from www.lyrics.ch)
Lonely days are gone, I'm a-goin' home,
'Cause my baby wrote me a letter.

Cocker (as I remember and imagine)
Lonely days are gone, (pause)
I'm a-goin' home,
My baby,
my baby done wrote me a letter. (band vamps a riff behind 'letter')

The Letter

The Letter
by The Box Tops
(also covered in a *great* version by Joe Cocker
with Leon Russell and the Shelter People)

Gimme a ticket for an aeroplane,
I ain't got time to take a fast train.
Lonely days are gone, I'm a-goin' home,
'Cause my baby wrote me a letter.

I don't care how much money I gotta spend,
Got to get back to my baby,
Lonely days are gone, I'm a-goin' home,
'Cause my baby wrote me a letter.

Well, she wrote me a letter,
Said she couldn't live without me no more.
Listen, mister, can't you see I got to get back
To my baby once more--anyway...

Gimme a ticket for an aeroplane,
I ain't got time to take a fast train.
Lonely days are gone, I'm a-goin' home,
'Cause my baby wrote me a letter.
