"She Blinded Me With Science" by Thomas Dolby
*********************************************

Ohno! I forgot to mention this excellent, amazing song in my post called
"Bobbi/"brwriter"'s Top Song Favorites"! This is *quite* embarrassing,
for I've always *loved* Thomas Dolby's songs!

Note to MTV: thanks for the (unintentional on your part) reminder! The
reminder is that I just saw an ad for an excellent-looking series of CDs
called "Sounds of the '80s" (1-800-939-1818, by the way!)

One of the things that I found infuriating about people's knowledge of
Thomas Dolby is that they all know him well for what is essentially a
novelty song (albeit a damn good one) and there's 8-9 other songs
(depending on which version of the album you have) that deserve to be
heard more widely. I think "Europa and the Pirate Twins" deserved to be a
hit more than "Science" did. Mind you, getting turned onto Dolby's stuff
with the first U.S. version of the vinyl album (which had "Leipzig" and
"Urges" instead of "Science" and "One of Our Submarines") helped a lot.

His entire debut album was great. He never quite managed to follow
it up, but has later produced a couple of classic albums for
Prefab Sprout.

Disagree utterly, utterly, utterly.

Golden Age was great
Flat Earth superb, different to Golden Age ( Tell me you've
never sung 'Screen Kiss' in the bathroom to get the
acoustics).
We then waited 5 years for Aliens but what a superb piece
of work
Astronauts was different again but just as brilliant

I've not tracked down a copy of Minds Eye yet.

They're all brilliant and reflect Mr Dolby's change in
his approach to his music. It's hard to pick one out above
the others as they're all masterpieces.

Agree that it was an excellent piece of work.

I disagree here. The polar opposite of _Flat Earth_. I call it _Los
Angeles Ate My Brain_.

He picked it back up here, though, even with the obvious sample in
"Eastern Bloc".

Ditto, but I'd give it a chance.

I still say _Wireless_ is the classic, with _Flat Earth_ a heel-snapping
second.

I *do* understand what you're saying. The difference between
them was staggerngly apparent for someone like me who has
been following his work since Europa and the Pirate Twins
was released over here in 1981 ( Argh! ).

I think what gets me in 'Aliens' is the quality of the
lyricism and the unsuppresable humour that permeates the
whole piece. The humour was always there but the great
fun and joy that he gets out of his works comes to the
fore far much more in this album than any other.

I mean, who else would write a song entitled 'My brain is
like sieve' ?

Anyway, a little bit from 'All I want is the key to her Ferarri'.
From memory, corrections welcome.

There she sat, a bright red 1960 GTO with fins and gills
like some giant piranha fish, an obscene phallic symbol
on wheels.

Little rivers of anticipation ran down my inseam as
I kicked those 500 italian horses into life and left
reality behind me

fifty, sixty, seventy miles an hour, oh !
I unzipped my trousers as we passed eighty, ninety miles

exploded all over her bright pink leather interior.
And at that moment....I thought of my mother

I can only recommend it.
I have the CD, as well as the multimedia CD.
They are well worth their money. Excellent pieces of work (art?).

You might also want to check out Thomas Dolby's Headspace website
(www.headspace.com). The "Beatnik" plugin, he (co-)develloped, is the best
thing I have heard so far. It makes even Midi-files sound like music.
Try it! There are also dozens of RMF (rich music format) files there.

Cheers,
Juergen
