I know it's just a song, and for fun, but obviously some different
meaning is implied than a California hotel.
I was sketching a tropical type hotel on the back of my notebook in church
when my friend noticed it and told me that song was about somebody
tripping on acid... or some other drug. After a bit, it seems to make sense.
It all starts when the guy's getting kind of sleepy at the wheel...
certainly an outside influence. Then, he sees the woman and hears the
mission bells. Then, "this could be heaven, or this could be hell".
Sounds like a kind of tentative experience... could be drugs, maybe not.
Then, as he's walking down the hall, he hears the voices of the other
imprisoned.
And, there's that line of: 'we are all prisoners here, of our -own-
device'... hint hint?
And later, the diner guests 'just can't kill the beast'. Hint hint.
After that, 'had to try to find passage back, to where I was before.'
etc. etc.

This has probably already been answered but:
The Hotel California is a mental institution in CA. What (I believe)
they are singing about is a person that is in Hotel California, hence
him trying to get out. (Read Alistar Crowley)
Colitas are a desert flower I believe, hence the 'warm smell of colitas...'
The "Check out any time you like, but you can never leave." should be
self explanitory in a mental institution context... You're welcome
to check out, but you can't leave. :-)
Any other questions?
