Near the end of Aretha Franklin's version of "Respect," she seems to
sing:

R-E-S-P-E-C-T,
find out what it means to me.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T,
take out TCP.

Taking "TCP" out of "Respect" would leave "Rese," a nickname for
"Aretha."

But some lyrics archives claim these lines go like this:

R-E-S-P-E-C-T,
find out what it means to me.
R-E-S-P-E-C-T,
Take care, T-C-B.

So compare

Does anyone know conclusively which of these transcriptions is
accurate for Franklin's version?

I agree... and I always thought that T-C-B refered to Takin' Care of
Business.

I have always heard that the "TCB" line is correct, with the meaning
that it is short for "Takin` Care of Business".....

Perhaps Otis Redding`s (who wrote the song) version is clearer....

I have the song on CD and just listened to it for the first time today.

She is *definitely* singing:

It is definitely not the former. TCB was a popular saying in the 1960s which
stood for Taking Care of Business. In an NBC Special titled TCB in 1968, which
starred the Supremes and Temptations, they do a cover of Respect and you can
clearly here them say "Take care of TCB" on the soundtrack. Further, Aretha
has never gone by the nickname Rese.

Good Luck!

I have the sheet music for the song. It quotes the lyrics as:

Beware of the sheet music, they are notoriously inaccurate. Reason?
Songwriters make very little from the publishing of the sheet music, and
usually cannot be bothered checking it for errors. That means we usually
wind up with songs printed in the wrong key, with chords missing or
substituted, and words spelled wrong.

Personally, I think the sheet music lyrics are accurate in this case, but
not for lack of trying.

It's not unusual for sheet music to be wrong, as it is in this case. A few
years ago, Aretha sang "Respect" on the Oprah Winfrey show. After her
performance, Oprah asked her about that line and Aretha replied that it's
"Take care, TCB", with TCB standing for "take care of business".
