(Personally, I think Lou Rawls sang the very best version). So here's the lyrics:

"Tobacco Road"

I was born in a trunk.
Mama died and my daddy got drunk.
Left me here to die alone
in the middle of Tobacco Road.

Growin' up rusty shack,
all I had was hangin' on my back.
Only you know how I loathe
this place called Tobacco Road.

But it's home, the only life I ever known.
Only you know how I loathe Tobacco Road.

Gonna leave, get a job
with the help and the grace from above.
Save some money, get rich and old,
bring it back to Tobacco Road.

But it's home, the only life I ever known.
Only you know how I loathe Tobacco Road.

Bring that dynamite and a crane,
blow it up, start all over again.
Build a town, be proud to show.
Gives the name Tobacco Road.

- John D. Loudermilk

It was written by John Loudermilk. One of the best recordings I have
ever heard of this song was by Rare Earth. You still may even catch
them live as they are still touring and playing this song. Sorry for
the all caps. This is how I have them in my data base for easy reading
at rehersal.

TOBACCO ROAD

I WAS BORN / IN A DUMP
MY MOMMA DIED / MY DADDY GOT DRUNK
HE LEFT ME HERE / TO DIE OR GROW
IN THE MIDDLE OF TOBACCO ROAD
OH YA YA YA YA
LEAD
I GREW UP IN / A RUSTY SHACK
AND ALL I OWNED / WAS HANGIN ON MY BACK
THE LORD KNOWS / HOW I LOATH
THIS PLACE CALLED TOBACCO ROAD

BUT IT'S HOME, IT'S REALLY MY HOME/
THE ONLY LIFE / I'VE EVER KNOWN
BUT THE LORD, THE LORD KNOWS HOW I LOATH/
TOBACCO ROAD
LEAD
I'M GONNA LEAVE / AND GET A JOB
WITH THE HELP, AND THE GRACE OF GOD
I'LL SAVE MY MONEY / AND GET RICH I KNOW
BRING IT BACK TO TOBACCO ROAD
LEAD
I I I'M GONNA GET ME SOME DYNAMITE/ GONNA BRING ME A CRANE
GOT TO BLOW YOU UP / GOT TO TEAR YOU DOWN
AND START ALL OVER AGAIN
WELL I'LL BUILD A TOWN / I'LL BE PROUD TO SHOW
KEEP THE NAME OF TOBACCO ROAD

CAUSE IT'S HOME / THE ONLY LIFE / I HAVE EVER KNOWN/
I DESPISE, YOU BECAUSE YOUR FILTHY/
BUT I LOVE YOU CAUSE YOUR MY HOME/
TOBACCO ROAD / TOBACCO ROAD
YOUR DADDY HAS BUILT IT / TOBACCO ROAD
I'M GONNA GET ME SOME DYNAMITE / GONNA BRING ME A CRANE
GOT TO BLOW YOU UP / GOT TO TEAR YOU DOWN
START ALL OVER AGAIN /
TOBACCO ROAD / TOBACCO ROAD /

I DESPISE, I DESPISE CAUSE YOUR FILTHY
BUT I LOVE YOU BECAUSE YOU'RE MY HOME
TOBACCO ROAD ROAD / TALKIN ABOUT A DIRTY LOW DOWN FILTHY PLACE
