Don't the umlauts indicate that the vowel is followed by an 'e', so that
"für" (your "fUr") is "Fuer"?

OK, some corrections to typos are coming your way...
(BTW the usual way to transcribe an umlaut (diaresis (sp?))
is to type "ae" for "a umlaut", "oe" for "o umlaut", "ue" for "u umlaut"
and "ss" for "sz-ligature")
