>Looking for the lyrics of a Steppenwolf "protest song" called "Monster."
These are the lyrics that are printed on the record jacket. I'm pretty
sure there are a few minor discrepencies between these lyrics and what
is actually sung on the record. If I get a chance over the next few
days, I'll have a listen to the record and post the corrected lyrics.
MONSTER
(John Kay/Jerry Edmonton)
- as printed on the record jacket of
the 1969 album "Monster" by Steppenwolf
Once the religious, the hunted and weary
Chasing the promise of freedom and hope
Came to this country to build a new vision
Far from the reaches of Kingdom and pope
Like good Christians some would burn the witches
Later some bought slaves to gather riches
And still from near and far to seek America
They came by thousands, to court the wild
But she patiently smiled, and then bore them a child
To be their spirit and guiding light
And when the ties with crown had been broken
Westward in saddle and wagon it went
And till the railroad linked ocean to ocean
Many the lives which had come to an end
While we bullied, stole and bought our homeland
We began the slaughter of the red man
But still from the near and far to seek America
They came by thousands to court the wild
But she patiently smiled and bore them a child
To be their spirit and guiding light.
The Blue and Grey they stomped it
They kicked it just like a dog
And when the war was over
They stuffed it just like a hog
But though the past has its share of injustice
Kind was the spirit in many a way
But its protectors and friends have been sleeping
Now it's a monster and will not obey
The spirit was freedom and justice
Its keepers seemed generous and kind
Its leaders were supposed to serve the country
Now they don't pay it no mind
Cause the people got fat and grew lazy
Now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and 'bout order
But it's just the echo of what they've been told
Yes a monster's on the loose
It's put our heads into the noose
And just sits there watching
The cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is strangling the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
The whole world has to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner we can't pay the cost
Yes a monster's on the loose
It's put our heads in a noose
And just sits there watching
American where are you now
Don't you care about your sons and daughters
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster.

Here are the corrected lyrics:
MONSTER
(John Kay/Jerry Edmonton)

And its keepers seemed generous and kind
Its leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
Now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into the noose
And it just sits there watchin'
The cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole world's got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner we can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into the noose
And it just sits there watchin'
America, where are you now
Don't you care about your sons and daughters
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster
America, where are you now
Don't you care about your sons and daughters
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster

America... (three more times, then fade)

here go the Monster and the Steppenwolf:
MONSTER
America, where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know, we need you now?
We can't fight alone against the monster.
Once the religious, the hunted and weary,
chasing the promise of freedom and hope,
came to this country to build a new vision,
far from the reaches of Kingdom and Pope.
While we bullied, stole and bought our home land;
we began the slaughter of the Red Man.
But still, from near and far to seek America,
They came by thousands to court the wild.
But she just patiently smiled then bore a child
to be their spirit and guiding light.
The Blue and Gray the stomped it,
they kicked it , just like a dog.
And when the war was over,
They stuffed it, just like a hog.
And 'tho' the past has its share of injustice;
Kind was the spirit in many a way.
But its protectors and friends
have been sleeping.
Now it's a Monster and will not obey.
The cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is strang'lin' the land.
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand.
We don't know how to mind our own business
'cause the whole world's got to be just like us.
Now we are fighting a war over there;
No matter who's the winner,
we can't pay the cost.
'Cause it's a Monster on the loose;
It's our head into the noose.
And it just sits there watching.
America where are you now.......

no problem. Here it goes:
THE PUSHER
You know I smoked a lot of grass
Lord I dropped a lotta pills.
But I never touched nothin',
that my spirit could kill.
You know I've seen a lotta people walkin' 'round
with tombstones in their eyes,
But the pusher don't care,
if you live or if you die.
God damn the pusher.
God damn, hey hey I say the pusher.
I say God damn,
God damn the pusher man.
You know, the dealer
The dealer is a man
with love grass in his hand,
oh but the pusher is a monster;
good God, he's not a nat'ral man.
The dealer for a nickel, Lord,
will sell you lots of sweet dreams,
ah but the pusher ruin your body,
Lord, he'll leave your
he'll leave your mind to scream
Well now if I were the president of this land
You know, I'd declare total war on the pusher man.
I'd cut him if he stands and I'd shoot him if he'd run.
Then I'd kill him with my Bible and my razor and my gun.
God damn the pusher .....
