The song was done by Sonny James. The words are as follows.
Running Bear by Sonny James
On the banks of the river
Stood Running Bear young Indian brave
On the other side of the river
Stood his lovely Indian maid
Little White Dove was-a her name
Such a lovely sight to see
But their tribes they fought each other
So their love could never be
(Chorus)
Running Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love big as the sky
Running Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love that wouldn't die
Her couldn't swim the ragging river
Cause the river was to wide
He couldn't reach his Little White Dove
Waiting on the other side
In the moon light he could see her
Blowing kisses across the waves
Her little heart was beating faster
Waiting for her Indian Brave
(Chorus)
Running Bear dove in the water
Little White Dove did the same
And they swam the raging water
Through the swirling stream they came
As their lips touched and their hands met
The ragging river pulled them down
Now they'll always be together
In that happy hunting ground
(Chorus X 2)

The hit version of this that I remember was by Johnny Preston. Was Sonny
James really the composer? Is he the guy who did "Young Love"?
I also remember a parody of this about a guy with no clothes. The chorus went:
"Runnin' bare, down the sidewalk ....."
Anybody know about this?
Thanks,
Ted

Dru,
I don't know who say the song but it goes:
RUNNING BEAR
On the banks of the river
Stood Running Bear, young indian brave.
On the other side of the river
Stood his lovely indian maid.
Little White Dove, was a her name
Such a lovely sight to see.
But their tribes fought with each other
So their love could never be.
(chorus)
Running Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love big as the sky
Running Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love that wouldn't die.
Then Running Bear dove in the water
Little White Dove did the same
And they swam out to each other
Through the swirling stream they came
As their hands touched and their lips met
The raging river pulled them down
Now they'll always be together
In that happy hunting ground.
(chorus)
Running Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love big as the sky.
Running Bear loved Little White Dove
With a love that wouldn't die.
(Repeat chorus)
I believe this is the whole song. Hope this helps.
Peace,
Linda K.

Johnny Preston was the artist
I'd swear THE GUESS WHO did that tune also.
on the original johnny preston version, you get to hear composer j.p.
richardson (the big bopper) doing the "oom-pah" sound, and cajun/country
legend link davis making with the war whoops. link played on the tune also.
