From the book "Rise Up Singing"...

GUANTANAMERA
- words are from a poem by José Marti, adapted by Julian Orban
- music by Jose Fernandez Dias, adapted by Pete Seeger and Julian Orban

Translation:

I am a truthful man from the land where palms grow.
Before I die I want to share these poems of my soul.
My poems are clear green, they are flaming crimson.
My poems are a wounded fawn searching through the hills.
With the poor people of the earth I want to cast my lot.
The coolness of the mountains pleases me more than the sea.

José Marti was a Cuban poet and leader in several uprisings against Spanish
colonial rule until his death in the insurrection of 1898.
