Hi:

I'm doing research for a book about Detecting Deception and I'm trying
to locate the lyrics to a song from the Sixties I think that contained a
line something like:
"Smiling faces sometimes look back at you, can you dig it, yea ..."

I believe the artists were a Motown group but I've had no luck locating
the lyrics on the Web. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please
e-mail responses to: stan...@istar.ca

Thanks,

Ron Stansfield

Sounds like it could be "Smiling Phases," originally done by Traffic,
written by Steve Winwood, later covered by Blood Sweat & Tears.
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Happy trails,
Larry B.

Available on the Rhino CD "'70s Smash Hits, Vol. 5" (R2 71209).

SMILING FACES SOMETIMES
- written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong
- as recorded by The Undisputed Truth
- reached #3 in 1971

Smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friend
Smiling faces show no traces of the evil that lurks within (can ya dig it)
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes they don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I've got proof
Oh lord, yeah

Let me tell ya
The truth is in the eyes 'cause the eyes don't lie, amen
Remember, a smile is just a frown turned upside down, my friend
So hear me when I'm sayin'
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes, hey, they don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I've got proof

(beware) Beware of the handshake that hides a snake (can ya dig it, can ya dig it)
I'm a-tellin' you
(beware) Beware of the pat on the back, it just might hold you back
Jealousy (jealousy), misery (misery), envy (envy)
I tell ya, you can't see behind
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes, hey, they don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I've got proof

Hey your enemy won't do you no harm
'Cause you know where he's comin' from
Don't let the handshake and the smile fool ya
Take my advice, I'm only tryin' to school ya
Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes they don't tell the truth
Smiling faces, smiling faces tell lies and I've got proof
(smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes)

It was The Undisputed Truth who sang this in 1971.

Nope,
Sounds more like "Smiling Faces, sometimes" by "The Undisputed Truth"
early seventies:

"Smiling faces, sometimes,
Pretend to be your friend

Smiling faces show no traces

of the evil that lurks within... (can you dig it)
etc.

If you like, I can transcribe the entire lyric for you.
