Bob, go to http://lyrics.natalnet.com.br/
click on the main idex, then go to the T section........the lyrics are there
for " The Three Bells" (Little Jimmy Brown). This is the only version I am
familiar with, however there is nothing about Jimmy Brown stealing lead from
the church in it. Also, I checked Mudcat and they had nothing listed at all
for this song. Good luck.
THE THREE BELLS - The Browns Also recorded by The Compagnons de Chanson.
There's a village
Hidden deep in the valley
Among the pine trees half forlorn
And there, on a sunny morning
Little Jimmy Brown was born
All the chapel bells were ringing
In the little valley town
And the song that they were singing
Was for baby Jimmy Brown
Then the little congregation
Prayed for guidance from above
"Lead us not into temptation,
Bless this hour of meditation,
Guide him with eternal love"
There's a village
Hidden deep in the valley
Beneath the mountains high above
And there, twenty years thereafter
Jimmy was to meet his love
All the chapel bells were ringing,
'Twas a great day in his life
'Cause the song that they were singing
Was for Jimmy and his wife
Then the little congregation
Prayed for guidance from above
"Lead us not into temptation,
Bless, oh Lord this celebration,
May their lives be filled with love"
From the village
Hidden deep in the valley
One rainy morning dark and gray
A soul winged its way to heaven
Jimmy Brown had passed away
Just a lonely bell was ringing,
In the little valley town
'Twas farewell that it was singing
To our little Jimmy Brown
And the little congregation
Prayed for guidance from above
"Lead us not into temptation,
May his soul find the salvation,
Of Thy great eternal love."
I would imagine the lead on the roof came from a sad parody.

It had to be the UK !!!! As soon as I saw the stealing lead line I knew
the request had to come from the UK :))
It's the Barron Knights version. For non-Brits who have never heard of
them, they are a comedy group who parody hits of the time (Weird Al
Yankovic style ??).
Bob, if you still need them, I'm one of the sad gits who bought that
particular album so I'll dig it out.

Tony
Village au fond de la vallée
Comme égaré, presque ignoré
Voici qu'en la nuit étoilée
Un nouveau-né nous est donné
Jean-François Nicot qu'il se nomme
Il est joufflu, tendre et rosé
À l'église, beau petit homme,
Demain tu seras baptisé...
Une cloche sonne, sonne
Sa voix d'écho en écho
Dit au monde qui s'étonne:
"C'est pour Jean-François Nicot"
C'est pour accueillir une âme
Une fleur qui s'ouvre au jour
A peine, à peine une flamme
Encore faible qui réclame
Protection, tendresse, amour...
Village au fond de la vallée
Loin des chemins, loin des humains
Voici qu'après dix-neuf années
Coeur en émoi, le Jean-François
Prend pour femme la douce Élise
Blanche comme fleur de pommier
Devant Dieu, dans la vieille église
Ce jour il se sont mariés...
Toutes les cloches sonnent, sonnent
Leurs voix d'écho en écho
Merveilleusement couronnent
Just beautiful!

from the Barron Knights "Get Knighted" ...
LITTLE JIMMY BROWN
In the village, deep in the valley, the vicar went to morning prayer
He found that it was raining, there was something in the air
The marble font was overflowing, there was water everywhere
He looked up to the ceiling and found it wasn't there
All the chapel lead was missing and the rain was p-pouring down
When they asked who could have done it
They all blamed Jimmy Brown
And the little congregation prayed for sunshine from above
Cos the temporary corrugation made them wet to saturation
And they thought the place might flound
Deep, deep in the valley on a cold and rainy Monday morn
The police were out there searching but Jimmy Brown had gone
When they eventually found him this is what the poor boy said
I only pinched the drainpipes, someone else nicked all the lead
And the chapel lead's still missing and the rain's still pouring down
Though they're sure who is the culprit the lead still can't be found
And the little congregation prays for sunshine from above
But their constant meditation will not pay for restoration
Of the little church they love
Please, come along with me now
These friendly words they said that morn
They slameed Jim in the cooler wishing he had not been born
But when the Sarge took him his supper he found the cell was bare
He looked up to the ceiling, of course it wasn't there
And the chapel lead's still missing and the rain's still pouring down
And the organ isn't playing cos the organist has drowned
The collection box is missing and our Jimmy can't be found
And the little congregation needs a lot of medication
Cos the church has fallen down
