Who was the orginal Artist?
She did record it---on the Bell label. It was number 18 in 1973
for top 100 rock hits.
Later Reba McEntyre sang it too.
Uh...You lose. Vicki Lawerance was the original recording artist of the
song. Hope you didn't bet a lot! =)

You lose. Vicki Lawrence is the original artist. The song was
written by her husband. She recorded it in 1973, long before anyone
else.

Otis Redding sang the first cut I ever heard of this song - back in
the mid to late 60's. Don't know that this makes him the original
artist, though. However, since Otis was born and raised in GA,
it might very well be.

>It's by Reba McCentire or however that's spelled.
If you mean the original one, it was by Vicki Lawrence. Yes, the same
Vicki Lawrence that was on The Carol Burnett Show.

**I know Gladys Night & the PIPS! (or maybe not the pips) did a
version too!**
Are you sure you're not thinking of "Midnight Train To Georgia"?
I'll be with him (I know you will)
On that midnight train to Georgia (Leaving on the midnight train to
Georgia, whoo whoo)
I'd rather live in his world (live in his world)
Than live without him in mine (Her world is his, his and hers alone)...

Well, I'm not sure who's betting against Vicki, but I think you might
lose, if memory serves right. I remember 'cause it did sound so
improbable. Don't take my word for it, though; other folks would
probably recall better, and I'm sure there's someone out there that
has a copy of the song...

By golly, you've got a point here, Bill! I'm the one that said I first
heard it done by Otis Redding back in the 60's and sure nuff... you're
absolutely right, it was Midnight Train to Georgia that I was thinking
of! (The mind is the first thing to go, they say)!
So many people have done this song (Midnight Train to Georgia) - I can
think of at least 5 right offhand. Otis Redding, Gladys Knight,
Willie Nelson, Aaron Neville, and Conway Twitty.
My apologies to those who were victims of my forgetfulness! <g>
I don't have the original post, so I'm not sure
which version you're seeking, but Vicki Lawrence
also did this song in 1973.
Lissa
Reba McEntire just recorded it again a year or two ago.
Vicki Lawrence was *really* *truly* *honestly* the original
artist. Her husband at the time, Bobby Russell, wrote the
song. I swear! I have the 45.
