Pete Seeger does this song on his "Circles & Seasons" album from 1979. I
heard Arlo Guthrie do it on a TV special. Anyone have the lyrics and
chords? Thanx in advance!!!

Don't have the chords handy right now (would need to sit down with my
guitar in front of the computer; it's not written down, just in my
head), but here are the lyrics. The song is by Dave Mallett, a terrific
singer/songwriter (his version is lovely!) Also covered nicely by The
Clancy Brothers. (Also by John Denver, but he DID NOT write it, as so
many seem to assume!!) If you can't get the chords figgered out,
e-mail me, and I'll do it for you.

THE GARDEN SONG

CHORUS:
Inch by inch, row by row
I'm gonna make this garden grow
All I need is a rake and a hoe and a piece of fertile ground
Inch by inch, row by row
Someone bless the seeds I sow
Someone warm them from below till the rain comes tumbling down.

Pulling weeds and picking stones
Man is made of dreams and bones
Feel the need to grow my own, for the time is close at hand
Grain for grain, sun and rain
Find my way in nature's chain
Tune my body and my brain to the music from the land, and..

CHORUS

Planting rows straight and long
Temper them with prayer and song
Mother Earth will make you strong if you give her love and care
An old crow watching hungrily
From his perch in yonder tree
In my garden, I'm as free as that feathered thief up there

CHORUS

Garden Song
- words and music by Dave Mallet
- slight changes to chorus by Pete Seeger
- as recorded by Arlo Guthrie on the album "Precious Friend"

Inch by inch, row by row

Gonna make this garden grow
Gonna mulch it deep and low
Gonna make it fertile ground

Inch by inch, row by row

Please bless these seeds I sow
Please keep them safe below
Till the rain comes tumblin' down

Pullin' weeds, pickin' stones
We are made of dreams and bones
Need a place to call my own
Cause the time is close at hand

Grain for grain, sun and rain
Find my way in nature's chain
Tune my body and my brain

To the music of the land

Inch by inch, row by row

Gonna make this garden grow
Gonna mulch it deep and low
Gonna make it fertile ground

Inch by inch, row by row

Please bless these seeds I sow
Please keep them safe below
Till the rain comes tumblin' down

Plant your rows straight and long
Seasoned with a prayer and song

Mother Earth will make you strong

If you give her loving care
Old crow watchin' from a tree
He's got his hungry eye on me
In my garden I'm as free
As that feathered thief up there

Inch by inch, row by row

Gonna make this garden grow
Gonna mulch it deep and low
Gonna make it fertile ground

Inch by inch, row by row

Please bless these seeds I sow
Please keep them safe below
Till the rain comes tumblin' down

Inch by inch, row by row

Gonna make this garden grow
Gonna mulch it deep and low
Gonna make it fertile ground

Inch by inch, row by row

Please bless these seeds I sow
Please keep them safe below
Till the rain comes tumblin' down
