Interesting point: the line that we all thought was "like a star that
can't wait for the night" is *clearly* "like a star that can wink for a
night" on the remastered version.
This song is a great example of why Zeppelin will always be two steps
ahead of every other hard/heavy rock band. They were never afraid to
laugh at themselves and inject humor into a song. I can't think of
many other bands that would sing a song in which the singer is ticked
off at a girl for being late and begins to think all these depressed
thoughts about being stood up, only to realize that he messed up by
waiting at the wrong place.
Also a great example of why John Bonham was the best rock drummer of
them all. Just amazing how he drives this song along through the first
verses. Then he cuts loose during that "Latin" (or whatever) part
of the bridge. And then, when the band emerges from the bridge, the
way he plays against the beat and leads into Page's solo is just
beautiful.
Thanks to those who asked about these lyrics. I had forgotten just how
good this song is.
