I'S THE B'Y THAT BUILDS THE BOAT
- traditional Newfoundlander sea song

I's the b'y that builds the boat
I's the b'y that sails 'er
I's the b'y that catches the fish
And brings 'em home to Lizer

Hip yer partner Sally Tibbo
Hip yer partner Sally Brown
Fogo, Twillingate, Moreton's Harbour
All around the circle

Sods and rinds to cover the flake
Teas and cakes for supper
Flatfish in the spring of the year
Fried in maggoty butter

Hip yer partner Sally Tibbo
Hip yer partner Sally Brown
Fogo, Twillingate, Moreton's Harbour
All around the circle

I don't want yer maggoty fish
That's no good fer winter
I could buy as good as that
Down in Bonavista

Hip yer partner Sally Tibbo
Hip yer partner Sally Brown
Fogo, Twillingate, Moreton's Harbour
All around the circle

Wow, someone else is wondering about this song. Id love to know, too.
I think Stompin' Tom Conners has sung it. Isn't it from Newfoundland
or Nova Scotia? All I remember is:

I'se the bye that built the boat
And I'se the bye that sails her
I'se the bye that catches the fish
And takes 'em home ta Liz'er

Hope more verses come down the pike.

A great high energy tune

I'se the bye that builds the boat
And I'se the bye what sails her
I'se the bye that catched the fish
And takes them home to Liza

Chorus
Hip yer partner Sally Tibo

Hip yer partner Sally Brown

Fogo, Twillingate, Morton's Harbour
All around a circle

Sod and rinds to cover yer flake
Cake and tea for supper
Codfish in the sring o' the year
Fried in maggoty butter

I don't want yer maggoty fish
That's no good for winter
I can buy as good as that
Down in Bonavista

Suasn White she's out of sight
Her petticoat wants a border
Old Sam oliver in the dark
He kissed her in the corner

I took Liza to a dance
And faith but she could travel
And every step that she did take
Was up to her knees in gravel.

------That's all I know - does anyone have more????

Hmm. Let's see....

2)Hip you partner Sally Tibbo (Thibault?)
Hip your partner Sally Brown
Fogo, Twillingate, Morton's harbour
all around the circle

3)I took Liza to a dance and
faith, but she could travel

every step that she did take

was up to her knees in gravel

4)I don't want your maggotty fish
that's no good in winter

I can buy as good as that

down in Bonavista

I'm not sure of all the spellings. Fogo and Twillingate are isalnds =
off the south shore - the people from there have an even more =
distinctive accent than other parts of Newfoundland. Beautiful island =
and warm people, if you ever get the chance to go there (I worked a =
summer vacation there in a mining camp.)
