Introduction to alt.music.lyrics
================================

Welcome to the alt.music.lyrics usenet newsgroup, a public forum for the
discussion of song lyrics.

Please help to make this newsgroup more enjoyable for everyone by following
these simple guidelines:

1. Please be sure to provide a meaningful Subject line in the header of your
message. If you're requesting lyrics, your subject line should start with
"REQ: " and contain sufficient information to identify the song without
reading the entire message. If you're trying to identify the title and/or
artist of a song, start your subject line with "ID: " and follow it with a
prominent phrase from what you know of the lyrics. Here are some examples of
correct and incorrect subject headers:

Correct:
REQ: "Blackbird" by The Beatles
REQ: Theme from "Green Acres" TV show
ID: Thunder only happens when it's raining

Incorrect:
Help!!! - need lyrics
Request
Important Question!!!

You're much more likely to get a reply to your posting if you provide a
meaningful subject line. Many people in this newsgroup will refuse to answer
messages with Subject lines like those in the last three examples above.
Also, you should repeat the request in the body of your message so that
repliers have something meaningful to quote. Think of the Subject field in
the header as a brief summary of the message content - not a replacement for
it.

2. Requests and lyrics postings should be limited to one song per message.
There's no limit on how many requests you can make or how many songs you can
post lyrics for, but please create a separate message for each song.

3. Don't post off-topic messages. The only topics that are appropriate for
this newsgroup are lyrics and the alt.music.lyrics newsgroup itself. There
are many kind, helpful and knowledgable people who regularly reply to
messages in this newsgroup and you may be tempted to ask other music-related
or non-music-related questions. Please don't! There are other newsgroups
available that would be a more appropriate forum for your posting. To find a
suitable newsgroup, use the "Interest Finder" at DejaNews
http://www.dejanews.com/home_if.shtml.

4. Don't reply to off-topic messages in the newsgroup. Inevitably, people
will occasionally post off-topic messages, despite guideline #3 above. If
you can't resist the urge to reply, then do so via private e-mail rather
than through the newsgroup.

5. Please don't request private e-mail replies. All replies that might be of
interest to others should be posted to the newsgroup. Lyrics should always
be posted to the newsgroup so that everyone gets an opportunity to read them
(except for songs on the "Frequently Requested Lyrics" list). If you wish,
you can e-mail a COPY of your posting to the requester as a courtesy.

6. All messages should be in human-readable text format only. Please do not
post uuencoded or mime-encoded messages. Do not post compressed archives
such as "zip" files or "stuffit" files. Do not post binaries such as "wav"
or "midi" sound files.

7. Don't post large collections of lyrics in the newsgroup. Instead, post a
list of the titles/artists and offer to e-mail the lyrics directly to anyone
who wants them. Better yet, upload your lyrics to the world wide web and
post the URL of the web site. If you don't want to create your own web site,
there are several existing lyrics archives on the web that will accept your
lyrics submissions and add them to their online archive. For example,
http://www.lyrics.net or http://www.lyrics.ch.

8. Trim irrelevant portions of quoted text before posting a reply. At the
very least, you should delete the quoted signature and lines such as "Hi
everyone" and "Thanks in advance".

9. When you receive replies to your lyrics requests, please don't post your
"Thank You" note to the newsgroup unless it contains additional information
that might be of interest to the group. Instead, send it by e-mail directly
to the replier.

10. Please check the "Frequently Requested Lyrics" list before posting
requests or replies for any of the following songs. The complete list,
containing many more songs and URLs for the lyrics, is available at the
alt.music.lyrics web site

Please note that it's
Mary Hopkin and not
Mary Hopkins. I see that
a lot.
