Here is my situation. I work for the Grand Forks Herald
(www.gfherald.com) and we are facing the flood of the century this
spring.

On of the things we are trying to do is provide readers something other
than gloom and doom, so we have been coming up with funny lists and
such.

That is where you come in. I need a list of the best songs involving
water, rivers and especially floods.

My own personal fav? "When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zepplin.

Anyway, if you could post suggestions here or email me at
abra...@gfherald.infi.net, I would surely be thankful.

If you live within walking distance of the Herald office, I'll buy you a
beer at Whiteys.

Thanks,

Andrew Braford

That's easy. The quintessential flood song HASTA be Johnny Cash's "Five
Feet High and Rising" from 1959.

How about Peter Gabriel's "Here Comes The Flood" from his first solo album?

You're right, of course...But another good one is "Down in the Flood"
by Bob Dylan.

There's an old Johnny Cash song, "__ Feet High And Rising". I'm not sure
of the exact title, but the water gets higher in each verse. Sort of like
his song "10 More Minutes To Go".

Might I suggest "In the River" by the Call

"So we gathered here
for a silent prayer.
For the lives we lost,
and the love we share.
But the river rolls,
and the Heavens cry,
and we'll all be drowned,
in the River..."

Hello Andrew! I put some time into this one because I'm a North Dakota
native myself. (My rule? I only go back there in the summer unless
somebody dies.) In fact, got an e-mail from Jeff Kolpack the other day
(know him? he writes for the Forum) asking me why I wasn't up there
sandbagging. (Refer to my rule.) Anyway. Here's what I came up with
for you. Hope you are able to bring some relief to all the rest of you
silly people who haven't figured out yet that there are places to live
that that have NICE weather. :-)

ang.

Specifically about rivers:
Red River - BoDeans (not bad, eh?)
The River - John Mellencamp
The River - Bruce Springsteen
The River - Garth Brooks
Across the River - Bruce Hornsby
Where the River Goes - Stone Temple Pilots
Riverside - Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Green River - CCR
Cry Me a River - Joe Cocker
Black Water - Doobies
River - Natalie Merchant (actually a song about River Phoenix, but hey!)

Specifically about flooding:
Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughn
Warmer Place to Sleep - John Mellencamp (one of my favorite songs,
contains the lines: "For 40 days and 40 nights I slept out in the rain")

Songs about rain:
Raindrops Keep Fallin 'on My Head - BJ Thomas (too obvious!)
Who'll Stop the Rain - CCR
I Think It's Going to Rain - Joe Cocker
Feels Like Rain - Buddy Guy
Rain on the Scarecrow - John Mellencamp
I Sure Can Smell the Rain - Blackhawk
Delta Rain - The Blessing
Beatiful Rain - BoDeans (yeah right)
Rain - Candlebox
Rain King - Counting Crows
The Sky Is Crying - Stevie Ray Vaughn

Songs about water (might be a river - might not!)
Down by the Water - PJ Harvey
The Tide Will Rise - Bruce Hornsby
Water's Edge - Seven Mary Three
Oceans - Pearl Jam
The Water Is Wide - Traditional (James Taylor recorded it)
Walk on Water - Aerosmith
Walk on Water - Eddie Money
Prince of the Deep Water - The Blessing
Gimme Some Water - Eddie Money
Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel
Bring Me Some Water - Melissa Etheridge

Other songs that might work for your purposes:
Riders on the Storm - Doors
Fixing a Hole - Beatles
The Thunder Rolls - Garth Brooks
Drowning - Hootie & the Blowfish
Let Me Drown - Soundgarden

And, finally, what you're probably hoping for up there:
Heavy Cloud No Rain - Sting
Lack of Water - The Why Store
Total Evaporation - The Radiators

cheers!

I remember a couple of old country songs about rivers. One has a chorus
that says "The bridge washed out, I can't swim, and my baby's on the
other side." The other is more southern --- Louisiana Woman, Missisippi
man

also -- Black water by the Doobies, and Black muddy River by the Dead

Muddy waters (Bluegrass song - not sure who else recorded it, but 'The
Seldom Scene' definitely did).
