SIXTEEN TONS
- written by Merle Travis

Now some people say a man's made out of mud
But a poor man's made out of muscle and blood
Muscle and blood, skin and bones
A mind that's weak and a back that's strong

You load sixteen tons and what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one morning when the sun didn't shine
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number one coal
And the straw boss hollered, "Well bless my soul!"

You load sixteen tons and what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

I was born one morning in the drizzling rain
Fighting and trouble is my middle name
I was raised in the bottoms by a momma hound
I'm mean as a dog but I'm gentle as a lamb

You load sixteen tons and what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

If you see me coming, you better step aside
A lot of men didn't and a lot of men died
I got a fist of iron and a fist of steel
If the right one doesn't get you then the left one will

You load sixteen tons and what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store

: And the straw boss hollered, "Well bless my soul!"

don't know exactly what travis wrote, but ford sings "and the straw boss
said..."
:

: I was raised in the bottoms by a momma hound

: I'm mean as a dog but I'm gentle as a lamb

ford does not sing these 2 lines in the original 1955 version

he does sing:

i was raised in a cane break by an old mama lion
ain't no high-toned woman make me walk the line.

: I got a fist of iron and a fist of steel

: If the right one doesn't get you then the left one will

ford sings:

one fist of iron, the other of steel
if the right one don't get you, then the left one will

again; the above are from ford's version. travis himself recorded the song,
but i do not recall his exact wording.

Sixteen Tons
(Merle Travis)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
Picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I hauled Sixteen Tons of number 9 coal
And the store boss said, "Well, bless my soul"

(Chorus:)

You haul Sixteen Tons, whadaya get

Another day older and deeper in debt

Saint Peter don't you call me cause I can't go

I owe my soul to the company store

Repeat Chorus

Born one morning it was drizzl'n rain
Fightin' and Trouble are my middle name
I was raised in a canebrake by an old mama lion
And no high-toned woman make me walk the line

Repeat Chorus

See me comin' better step aside

A lot of men didn't and a lot of men died

I got one fist of iron and the other of steel
And if the right one don't get ya, the left one will

Repeat Chorus

Born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine
Picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I hauled Sixteen Tons of number 9 coal
And the store boss said, "Well, bless my soul"
