Ok, I'm trying to compile a list of songs that mention in ANY form the names of
Greek/Roman gods and goddesses, or people from Greek/Roman myths. I know that
ya'll are smart, so I figured you'd be of tremendous help to me. [It's for a
strange little project i'm working on.]

Anyhow, this is the VERY small list I have so far.

Cupid - Sam Cooke
She's So High - Tal Bachman (mentions Aphrodite)
Jupiter - Jewel (mentions Venus and Jupiter)
Sometimes It Be That Way - Jewel (Aphrodite, Neptune)
Stupid Cupid - (who is the artist on this song, i forget?)

Also, i know that there is a country song by a male singer/group that has a
line, But, I thought I was strong . . . Like ol' Hercules." Can anyone confirm
artist/title for me? I -think- it's called, "Texas Sized Heartache".

thanks a whole bunch in advance... :)

I have a question, do you want songs that refer to the greek/roman god/goddess as
in the context of their person or could it also be as in the planet they
represent? Also, let me understand, you want muses, nymphs, demi-gods, or just
ordinary folks as long as it is in greek/roman myth-- right? Just clearing it up
for myself --mamu

SAIGON BRIDE
(Music by Joan Baez, Lyrics by Nina Duscheck)

Farewell my wistful Saigon bride
I'm going out to stem the tide
A tide that never saw the seas
It flows through jungles, round the trees
Some say it's yellow, some say red
It will not matter when we're dead

How many dead men will it take
To build a dike that will not break?
How many children must we kill
Before we make the waves stand still?

Though miracles come high today
We have the wherewithal to pay
It takes them off the streets you know
To places they would never go alone
It gives them useful trades
The lucky boys are even paid

Men die to build their Pharoah's tombs
And still and still the teeming wombs
How many men to conquer Mars
How many dead to reach the stars?

Farewell my wistful Saigon bride
I'm going out to stem the tide
A tide that never saw the seas
It flows through jungles, round the trees
Some say it's yellow, some say red
It will not matter when we're dead

From the civil war, an oldie but a goodie...

The Bonnie Flag with the Stripes and Stars
by: Col. J.L. Geddes of the Eight Iowa Infantry and Henry Werner (

We're fighting for our Union,
we're fighting for our trust
We're fighting for that happy land
where sleeps our Fathers dust
It cannot be dissever'd tho'
it cost us bloody wars
We never can give up the land where
float the Stripes and Stars

We treated you as brothers untill
you drew the sword,
With impious hands at Sumpter you
cut the silver cord,
So now you hear our bugles we come
the sons of Mars,
We rally round that brave old flag
which bears the Stripes and Stars

We do not want your cotton,
we care not for your slaves,
But rather than divide this land,
we'll fill your southern graves
With Lincoln for our chieftain,
we'll wear our countrys scars
We rally round that brave old flag,
that bears the Stripes and Stars

We deem our cause most holy,
we know we're in the right
And twenty millions of freemen
stand ready for the fight
Our bride is fair Columbia,
no stain her beauty mars
O'er her we'll raise that brave old flag,
which bears the Stripes and Stars!

And when this war is over,
we'll each resume our home
And treat you still as brothers
where ever you may roam
We'll pledge the hand of friendshi,
and think no more of wars
But dwell in peace beneath the flag,
that bears the Stripes and Stars!

Chorus:
Hurrah, hurrah, for equal rights hurrah
Hurrah for the brave old flag that
bears the Stripes and Stars!

Venus
Frankie Avalon

Hey, Venus! Oh, Venus!

Venus if you will
Please send a little girl for me to thrill.
A girl who wants my kisses and my arms
A girl with all the charms of you.

Venus, make her fair
A lovely girl with sunlight in her hair.
And take the brightest stars up in the skies
And place them in her eyes for me.

Venus, goddess of love that you are,
Surely the things I ask
Can't be too great a task.

Venus, if you do
I promise that I always will be true.
I'll give her all the love I have to give
As long as we both shall live.

Venus, goddess of love that you are
Surely the things I ask
Can't be too great a task.

Venus if you do
I promise that I always will be true.
I'll give her all the love I have to give
As long as we both shall live.

Hey, Venus! Oh, Venus!
Make my wish come true.

Venus In Blue Jeans
Jimmy Clanton

She's Venus in blue jeans
Mona Lisa with a ponytail
She's walkin' talkin' work of art
She's the girl who stole my heart

My Venus in blue jeans
Is the Cinderella I adore
She's my very special angel too
A fairy tale come true

They say there's seven wonders in the world
But what they say is out of date
There's no more seven wonders in the world
I just met number eight

My Venus in blue jeans
Is ev'rything I hoped she'd be
A teenage goddess from above
And she belongs to me

My Venus in blue jeans
Is ev'rything I hoped she'd be
A teenage goddess from above
And she belongs to me

Venus
Shocking Blue (and Bananarama)

A goodess on a mountain top,
was burning like a silver flame.
The summit of beauty she was,
and Venus was her name.

She's got it, Yeah baby she's got it.
Well, I'm your Venus, I'm your fire at you desire.
Well, I'm your Venus, I'm your fire at you desire.

Her weapon were her crystal eyes,
making every man a man.
Black as a darknight she was,
got what no one else had.

Some Velvet Morning/ Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood

<Lee>
Some velvet mornin' when I'm straight
I'm gonna open up your gate
And maybe tell you 'bout Phaedra
And how she gave me life
And how she made it end
Some velvet mornin' when I'm straight

Flowers growing on a hill, dragonflies and daffodils
Learn from us very much, look at us but do not touch
Phaedra is my name

And how she gave me life
And how she made it end

Flowers are the things we know, secrets are the things we grow

Spirit

His spirit joined and so was formed
Ten thousand years ago
Between the swan and Hercules
Where even dark clouds glow

To live with grace, to ride the swell
To yet be strong of will
To love the wind, to learn it’s song
And empty space to fill

Apollo taught me to rhyme
Orpheus taught me to play
Andromeda cast down her sign
And vega lights my way

Smoke rings in a galaxy
An endless flight through time
Lyra gave her harp to him
And left him free to climb

A winter’s journey from the moon
To reach the summer sun
To rise again, to sing for you
A song that’s yet unsung

Apollo taught me to rhyme
Orpheus taught me to play
Andromeda cast down her sign
And vega lights my way

His spirit joined and so was formed
Ten thousand years ago
Between the swan and Hercules
Where even dark clouds glow

To live with grace, to ride the swell
To yet be strong of will
To love the wind, to learn her song
And empty space to fill

Pegasus

Peaceful valleys, animals and children asking me
Tell the story that you told of sailors drinking tea
Tell the one about the man who saddled up the wind
Pegasus and flying fish and woodsmen made of tin

A kid knows what he wants to be before he’s nine or ten
Cowboys, clowns, and men of war and someone else’s friend
But nine grows into big boys’ pants and then to scars and pain
Twenty’s fast and hard as nails but doesn’t come again

There’s days to fall and days to rise and days for making haste
Days for seeking out yourself but no days you can waste
Nighttimes filled with love so good it aches to rest it down
Endless hallways dark with sleep and rivers dark with sound

Peaceful valleys, animals and children asking me
Tell the story that you told of sailors drinking tea
Tell the one about the man who saddled up the wind
Pegasus and flying fish and woodsmen made of tin

Children climbing on my arms and pigeons on my head
Get thee up my little man and dream a dream instead
dream a dream of rocking chairs and flying through the night
Dream until the morning’s gone and turned the dark to light

Then come and get your daddy if he hasn’t blown away
Rock him in your children’s hands and help him find his way
Take him to your hiding place and let him come inside
He’ll never tell your secret, cross my heart and hope to die

Peaceful valleys, animals and children asking me
Tell the story that you told of sailors drinking tea
Tell the one about the man who saddled up the wind
Pegasus and flying fish and woodsmen made of tin

Excuse me for piggybackin' here but I've lost the original post that
started this thread.

Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood's "Some Velvet Morning" cites one
Phaedra. I looke her up once and found: In Greek mythology, Phaedra
was a daughter of Minos (and a granddaughter of Zeus) who married
Theseus and fell in love with her stepson Hippolytus.

Seeing Marge's "Pegasus" reminded me that there's another song called "I Am
Pegasus"
by Aussie singer/songwriter Brian Cadd from the 70's

I am Pegasus, my name means horse
And I can fly high with you,
But I've changed my course.
I am Michael, I am Jeffery and John
And I don't have to leave you, But I shall be gone.

I am Genesis, I have no fear,
I make my plans to land for I plan to stay here.
I am Simon, I am Demetrius and Jon
And I don't want to leave you, Unless you want me gone.

I am flying but let me down,
I don't need the things that once kept you (me) around.
It's not too late
1) to know who I am, I am Sagittarius.
2) Do you know who I am?

I am Pegasus, my name means horse
And I can fly high with you now,
But I've changed my course.
I am Michael, I am Jeffery, I am Demitrius and Jon
And I don't have to leave you,
No, no, no, no, no

"Aquarius" from "Hair" -- Jupiter, Mars
"Venus and Mars" by Wings -- guess!
"The Fountain of Salmacis" by Genesis (Nursery Cryme) -- the song
mentions Hermaphroditus (sp?) (demigod son of god Hermes and mortal
woman Aphrodite) and Salmacis (naiad) -- the story printed in the
booklet also mentions Hermes and Aphrodite, although the song doesn't.
Said story explains how the English word "hermaphrodite" came to be.

If you're interested, I could post or e-mail the whole lyric and story
of that last one...

This is the song "Persephone" by Wishbone Ash.
It's one of my personal favorites.
I type it as I remember it, there could be slight errors.

---------------------------------------------
There's a light that shines on Persephone
always a fire in her eyes
but the last time that I went to her
I could tell things weren't right.

I just don't care to see the years go wasting
There's no longer magic in your eyes.

In your time you could outshine
everybody else around
but your off-stage ways might be above
you take a bow, you take a fall.

I just don't care to see the years go wasting
There's no longer magic in your eyes.

(...)
(can't remember the next 2 lines, sorry)
But your hand displays a peaceful tune
I don't believe the curtain has to fall.

Now I know your years were never wasted
Tonight I saw the magic in your eyes.
---------------------------------------------

Greetings,
Steffen

Hi:

Your message is unclear to me. I have the lyrics to STUPID CUPID and VENUS IN
BLUE JEANS (but not My Little Hercules). Do you want them?

Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand

"Achilles' Last Stand"

It was an April morning when they told us we should go
As I turn to you, you smiled at me
How could we say no?

With all the fun to have, to live the dreams we always had
Oh, the songs to sing, when we at last return again

Sending off a glancing kiss, to those who claim they know
Below the streets that steam and hiss,
The devil's in his hole

Oh to sail away, To sandy lands and other days
Oh to touch the dream, Hides inside and never seen.

Into the sun the south the north, at last the birds have flown
The shackles of commitment fell, In pieces on the ground

Oh to ride the wind, To tread the air above the din
Oh to laugh aloud, Dancing as we fought the crowd

To seek the man whose pointing hand, The giant step unfolds
With guidance from the curving path, That churns up into stone

If one bell should ring, in celebration for a king
So fast the heart should beat, As proud the head with heavy feet.

Days went by when you and I, bathed in eternal summers glow
As far away and distant, Our mutual child did grow

Oh the sweet refrain, Soothes the soul and calms the pain
Oh Albion remains, sleeping now to rise again

Wandering & wandering, What place to rest the search
The mighty arms of Atlas, Hold the heavens from the earth

The mighty arms of Atlas, Hold the heavens from the earth
From the earth...

I know the way, know the way, know the way, know the way [X2]

Oh the mighty arms of Atlas, Hold the heavens from the earth.
