Johnny:

"Cracklin' Rosie" was recorded by Neil Diamond in 1970
and is about a bottle of "cheap" wine.

CRACKLIN' ROSIE
NEIL DIAMOND - 1972

Oh cracklin' rosie get on board we're gonna ride till there ain't
No more to go takin' it slow and lord don't you know
I'll have me a time with a poor man's lady!

Hitchin' on a twilight train ain't nothing here that I care
To take a long maybe a song to sing when I want
Don't need to say please to no man for a happy tune

CHORUS:
Oh I love my rosie child you got the way to make me happy
You and me go in style
Cracklin' rose you're a store bought woman
But you make me sing like a guitar humin' so hang on to me girl
Our song keeps runnin' on,
Play it now, play it now, play it now my baby

Cracklin' rosie make me smile
And girl if I lasts for and hour that's all right
'Cause we got all night to set the world right
Find us a dream that don't ask no questions yeah!

I always thought it was "Cracklin' Rosie you're a starboard woman,"
but if it is "store bought," that would make more sense, if it's
a bottle of wine.

Too tired to give you all the lyrics right now. But I can tell you
it's by Neil Diamond and is about a bottle of rose wine.

Yes. It's about a bottle of wine, not PORT!

Good one! It took me a couple of seconds to catch it :)

I remember arguing over this with my roommate in college. I had heard
that it was a bottle of wine, but he assumed that "store bought" meant
she was a hooker.

But I have to admit, it does seem odd that someone would write a song
about a bottle of wine, and express such strong emotions towards it.

CRACKLIN' ROSIE

by Neil Diamond

Yea, Cracklin' Rosie, get on board.
We're gonna ride 'til there ain't no more to go.
Takin' it slow,
Lord don't you know,
Happily a time when the poor man's let be

Hitchin' on a twilight train,
Ain't nothin' here that I care to take along,
Maybe a song,
To sing when I watch,
Don't mean to say please, said old man, I'm happy too.

Chorus:
Oh, I love my Rosie child, you got the way to make me happy.
You and me, we go in style.
Cracklin' Rose, you're a store-bought woman,
You make me sing like a guitar hummin.
Hang on to me, girl, our song keeps runnin' on.
Play it now, Play it now, Play it now my lady!

Cracklin Rosie, make me smile.
God it'll last for an hour, well that's alright,
We got all night,
To set the world right.
Find us a dream and don't ask no questions Yea!

Chorus
Last Verse

in Fish version:

Bah, bah bah bah bah.
Bah, bah bah bah bah bah bah bah bah
Bah bah bah bah
Bah, bah bah bah bah
Bah, bah bah bah bah bah bah bah bah BAH

The song is about a a guy in an indian tribe (in Canada I think , but I'm
not totally sure on that one). There are far more men than women in this
community, and the men buy themselves a bottle of Cracklin' Rose, as
their 'woman' for the night. That's the story anyway. Hope the line makes
more sense now.

I should know, my Mum's a Neil Diamond nut. She's on the front row for
ten consecutive concerts. Right Now...
