Could someone please interpret the Verve pipes Freshmen...and if there
is a story behind it is it a true story...I am very curious about the
lyrics :
I wont be held responsible
she was touching her face
i can't be held responsible
she fell in love in the first place
for the life of me
i can not remember
what made us think that we were wise and we'd never compramise
for the life of me
i can not believe we'd ever die for this sin
we were merely freshmen

ok, back when this song came out, some of the band members were guests on
Loveline, as it was told by Adam Corolla, this song is about post-breakup
depression. It's about how crappy we feel when we're the dumpee, and how
guilty we feel when we are the dumper --specially if we dump the wrong
one. The line, " stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice" could be
a reference to a wedding, so it sounds like he walked out on her just
before? and now he's going, 'man, I am SUCH an asshole...' Anyway, it's
about the fact that 'breaking up is hard to do.' Another interesting
point to the song is the denial here, how the singer is saying, "hey, it's
not MY fault she loves me and got her heart broke..." And how we all try
to deny it when we are falling in love. We feel our selves slipping and
we just RUN like hell... hoping cupid won't catch up to us. And
sometimes that fear of falling in love is so overwhelming, you end up
biting the hand that feeds your soul-- i mean, we sometimes will break up
with the person prematurely to avoid love and all that comes along with it
(openness, vulnerability, potential heartbreak-- all that great stuff)
Ok, so the first part, that its a song about post break up depression, I
got right from the source. True, Adam said it, but the guys confirmed it,
and didn't correct him. but the rest of the analysis, is mostly mine.
You might get other people who want to add or subtract from what I've
said. I think any interpretation in addition to the post break up
depression idea could be right. This is what makes Art... it's all in how
you look at it. I someone told me they thought this song was about
suicide. I think that's ONE way to look at it... prolly not what the
artist had in mind, but <shrug> it sure makes it interesting when you
think of it like that. ok, it's late, I am done. mamu

The Freshman
The Verve Pipe

when i was young and knew everything
and she a punk who rarely ever took advice
now i'm guilt stricken,
sobbing with my head on the floor
stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice

i can't be held responsible

cause she was touching her face
i won't be held responsible

she fell in love in the first place

for the life of me i cannot remember

what made us think that we were wise and

we'd never comprimise
for the life of me cannot believe
we'd ever die for these sins
we were merely freshman

my best friend took a week's
vacation to forget her
his girl took a week's worth of
valium and slept
now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his
head on the floor
think's about her now and how he never really
wept he says
(chorus)

we've tried to wash our hands of all of this
we never talk of our lacking relationships
and how we're guilt stricken sobbing with our
heads on the floor
we fell through the ice when we tried not to
slip, we'd say (chorus)

Not to sound rude but I'm pretty sure that I heard on TV or something
the story behind this song a while ago. That said this song is about a
couple that were really young in their relationship as well as their
age ( note the using of the term "freshmen"). Right after a break-up
the girl realizes that she is pregnant. Thinking there is no one to
turn to the girl kills herself. The guy looking back regrets his
decisions and realizes how young they really were to have all this
happen. Therefore he is guilt stricken and in turn is sobbing with his
head on the floor. But he's trying not to feel bad for never her by
saying she fell in love in the first place, that it was her fault.
Basically besides the suicide and pregnancy the song is about thinking
they knew everything and how stupid they were to think they held all
the answers when truly theu were only freshmen. Looking back he can't
believe that their immature, thinking they knew everything attitude
could of led to death, " for the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever
die for these sins". Somewhere a wedding ties in, but I'm nowt sure
how.

that's weird because on Loveline the guys said it was NOT about suicide at
all. that, being one of the popular misconceptions of the song which
inspired a discussion of what it was really about. <shrug> either way,
it's about breaking up in a bad way. LOL and I didn't think you were rude
at all, this person asked for what the interpretation, I gave mine, you
gave yours, someone else might give theirs, that's how it goes. --mamu
