Mr. Tambourine Man
The Byrds
- words and music by Bob Dylan

Hey Mister Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there ain't no place I'm goin' to
Hey Mister Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come followin' you

Take me for a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship
All my senses have been stripped
And my hands can't feel to grip
And my toes too numb to step
Wait only for my boot heels to be wanderin'

I'm ready to go anywhere I'm ready for to fade
On to my own parade cast your dancin' spell my way
I promise to go under it

Hey Mister Tambourine Man, play a song for me
I'm not sleepy and there ain't no place I'm goin' to
Hey Mister Tambourine Man, play a song for me
In the jingle jangle morning, I'll come followin' you

-------------------------------------------------------

Good luck,

MISTER TAMBOURINE MAN (Bob Dylan) (Artist: The Byrds)

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me.
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you.
Though I know that even's empire
Has returned into sand, vanished from my hand,
Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping.
My weariness amazes me,
I'm branded on my feet, I have no one to meet.
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me.
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you.
Take me on a trip upon your magic swirling ship.
My senses have been stripped,
My hands can't feel to grip, my toes too numb to step,
Wait only for my boot heels to be wandering.
I'm ready to go anywhere and ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way,
I promise to go under it.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me.
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you.
Though you might hear laughing, spinning,
Swinging madly across the sun, it's not aimed at anyone,
It's just escaping on the run
And but for the sky there are no fences facing.
And if you hear vague traces
Of skipping reels of rhyme to your tambourine in time
It's just a ragged clown behind, I wouldn't pay it any mind.
It's just a shadow you're seeing that he's chasing.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me.
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you.
Then take me disappearing through the smoke rings of my mind. Down the foggy
ruins of time,
Far past the frozen leaves, the haunted, frightened trees,
Out to the windy beach, far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky
Circled by the circus sands.
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves.
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me.
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come following you.

I am not refuting the above copyright info but... Dylan was with Columbia
records during this period. How does the Warner Bros. line fit into the
picture? I know there is SOME cross-pollination between record labels but
this one seems a bit unusual.

I am not refuting the above copyright info... but Dylan was with Columbia

credit fit in all this?

I find it hard for some of these more expensive label switching deals to take
place without some sort of tie in to back catalog. Perhaps thats is what this
copyright credit is referring to if correct. Also there are all sorts of
different types of publishing rights that may be involved, mechanical, etc...

Warner has many subsidiaries, and not just record labels. (Check
their Web site at www.wbr.com--it's amazing how many different
companies operate under the Time-Warner umbrella.) There's such as
Warner-Chappell, WEA, and other entities under the "Warner Music
Group" that do various functions, including special product
merchandising and licensing. I would guess that the copyright
mentioned was for licensing of the sheet music, not the performance
itself, or maybe some other form of licensing. I don't know that
Warner actively buys the rights to music by artists from competitive
labels, but that's a possibility as well. That copyright does sound
odd, knowing Dylan was signed under Columbia, but that might explain
how a Warner copyright got tagged on.

Looking at 'Lyrics 1962-1985 Bob Dylan', published by Knopf,

Dwarf Music,
Big Sky,
Special Rider.
Rams Horn,
Duchess Music Corporation,

are some of the other Publishing companies holding copyright on his songs. Some
of these are likely wholly owned by Mr. Zimmerman, some of them may be various
trades and barters along a career path.

Columbia/CBS may still hold onto various master tapes, at least they did in '85
when they compiled Biograph. Lots of different ways to slice that pie.
