The Isla Waters
Andy Stewart & Martin Hadden
(From Silly Wizard: Caledonias Hardy Sons)

I hae' friends, they buy me whisky
Bonnie friends they call my name
But if I should get too drunk for walkin'
Where's the man that would carry me hame

Chorus:
And if I be drunk in the Isla Waters
Through the Thistlewood I must hame
If I be drunk in the Isla Waters
My wee doggie would find me in the Isla Stream

All the day I bless that water
Aye she's bricht an' clear to see
But after hours o' ale hoose laughter
Dark an' still she waits for me

Chorus

Like the fishers line that's broken
Leaves the salmon tae the swell
Many's the nicht you've had me soakin'
Part tae break the lyer's hell

Chorus

All my days I've lived tae court her
Bauden bonny fine stuff I've seen
But should I droun in yuir water
My wee doggie would find me in the Isla Stream

Chorus

JOHN BARLEYCORN
(Traditional)
There were three men come out of the West
Their fortunes for to try,
And these three men made a solemn vow:
John Barleycorn should die!

They plowed, they sowed, they harrowed him in,
Threw clods upon his head,
And these three men made a solemn vow:
John Barleycorn was dead!

Then they let him lie for a very long time
'Til the rain from Heaven did fall,
And Little Sir John sprung up his head,
And so amazed them all!

Then they let him stand 'til Midsummer tide,
'Til he grew both pale and wan,
And Little Sir John he grew a long beard,
And so became a man!

Then they hired men with the sythes so sharp
To cut him off at the knee
They rolled him and tied him about the waist,
And used him barbarously!

Then they hired men with the sharp pitchforks
To pierce him to the heart,
And the loader he served him worse than that,
For he tied him in a cart!

They wheeled him around and around the field,
Til they came in to a barn,
And there they made a solemn mow
Of poor John Barleycorn,

Then they hired men with the crab-tree sticks
To strip him skin from bone
And the Miller he served him worse than that:
For he ground him between two stones!

Here's Little Sir John in a nut-brown bowl,
And brandy in a glass!
And Little Sir John in the nut-brown bowl
Proved the stronger man at last!

For the huntsman he can't hunt the fox
Nor loudly blow his horn,
And the tinker can't the mend kettles nor pots
Without a littleJohn Barleycorn!

Rosin the Bow

I've travelled all over this world
And now to another I go
And I know that good quarters are waiting
To welcome old Rosin the Bow

Chorus:
To welcome old Rosin the Bow
To welcome old Rosin the Bow
And I know that good quarters are waiting
To welcome old Rosin the Bow

When I'm dead and laid out on the counter
A voice you will hear from below
Saying send down a hogshead of whiskey
To drink with old Rosin the Bow

Then get a half dozen stout fellas
And stack them all up in a row
Let them drink outta half-gallon bottles
To the memory of Rosin the Bow

Then get this half dozen stout fellas
And let them all stagger and go
And dig a great hole in the meadow
And in it put Rosin the Bow

Then get ye a couple of bottles
Put one at me head and me toe
With a diamond ring scratch upon it
The name of old Rosin the Bow

I hear that old tyrant approaching
That cruel remorseless old foe
And I lift up me glass in his honour
Take a drink with old the Rosin the Bow

RYE WHISKEY

I'll eat when I'm hungry,
I'll drink when l'm dry,
If the hard times don't kill me,
I'll lay down and die.

Rye whisky, rye whisky,
Rye whisky, l cry,
If you don't give me rye whisky,
I surely will die.

I'll tune up my fiddle,
And I 'll rosin my bow,
I'll make myself welcome,
Wherever I go.

Beefsteak when l'm hungry,
Red liquor when l'm dry,
Greenbacks when I'm hard up,
And religion when I die.

They say l drink whisky,
My money's my own;
All them that don't like me,
Can leave me alone.

Sometimes l drink whisky,
Sometimes l drink rum,
Sometimes l drink brandy,
At other times none.

But if I get boozy,
My whisky's my own,
And them that don't like me,
Can leave me alone.

Jack o' diamonds, jack o' diamonds,
I know you of old,
You've robbed my poor pockets
Of silver and gold.

Oh, whisky, you villain,
You've been my downfall,
You've kicked me, you've cuffed me,
But I love you for all.

If the ocean was whisky,
And I was a duck,
I'd dive to the bottom
To get one sweet suck.

But the ocean ain't whisky
And l ain't a duck,
So we'll round up the cattle
And then we'll get drunk.

Sweet milk when l'm hungry,
Rye whisky when l'm dry,
If a tree don't fall on me,
I'll live till I die.

I'll buy my own whisky,
I'll make my own stew,
If I get drunk, madam,
It's nothing to you.

I'll drink my own whisky,
I'll drink my own wine,
Some ten thousand bottles
I've killed in my time.

I've no wife to quarrel
No babies to bawl;
The best way of living
Is no wife at all.

Way up on Clinch Mountain
l wander alone,
l'm as drunk as the devil,
Oh, let me alone.

You may boast of your knowledge
An' brag of your sense,
'Twill all be forgotten
A hundred years hence.

Whiskey Johnny - composite version

Whiskey is the life of man
Always was since the world began

Whiskey-o, Johnny-o
John rise her up from down below
Whiskey, whiskey, whiskey-o
Up aloft this yard must go
John rise her up from down below

Whiskey here, whiskey there
Whiskey almost everywhere

Whiskey up and whiskey down
Whiskey all around the town

Whiskey killed me poor old dad
Whiskey drove me mother mad

My wife and I do not agree
She puts whiskey in her tea

Some likes whiskey, some likes beer
I wisht I had a barrel here

Whiskey made me pawn me clothes
Whiskey gave me this broken nose

Oh the mate lieks whiskey, the skipper likes rum
The sailors like both but me can't get none

Whiskey is the life of man
Whiskey from that old tin can

I thought I heard the first mate say
I treats me crew in a decent way

If whiskey was a river and I could swim
I'd say here goes and dive right in

If whiskey was a river and I was a duck
I'd dive to the bottom and never come up

I wisht I knew where whiskey grew
I'd eat the leaves and the branches too

A tot of whiskey all around
And a bottle full for the shanty man

Hi,

how about "take your whiskey home" by Van Halen? A great song, by the
way.

Here's another that I think is an old country song--I don't know the name
of the song or who sang it--I only remember these lines:

Could have been the whiskey/Might have been the gin
Could have been the three or four sixpacks
I don't know, but look at the mess I'm in . . .

The song was "Wasn't that a Party" by the Irish Rovers, although they may
have been simply the Rovers by then.

[Etc]

I like the alternate chorus, too:
Rye whisky, rye whisky
You're no friend to me
You killed my poor daddy
Goddamn you, try me

In article <33A57A...@centuryinter.net>,

Can't find the start of this thread, so I'm not quite sure if you
want the names of songs with "whiskey" in the name or "whiskey"
anywhere in the lyrics, or songs about whiskey. Also whether you
just wanted "whiskey", or if "liquor," "Bourbon", "rye", etc., or
brand names like "Jim Beam," "Jack Daniels", etc. counted. Or
whether the song is supposed to be about whiskey, or just mention
it.

So I stuck with just "whiskey, & also just songs that I could
tell you where at least one record they were on.

But whoever wanted these (bbbuzz@aol?) might want to repost the
original request, if he/she still wants them.

Anyway, these are in a label format, i.e:
