Hi,

I recently listened to the movie, Dirty Dancing. Someone else was
watching it, and I heard it while I was in another room.

Please ID a song from the movie: it was a female voice singing a
strange tune in a sort of yodeling tone. It may not have been a
'featured' song, but may have been playing in the background while the
actors were doing something else. That's all I know. Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Barry

Was it the goofy song the older sister was practicing on the stage
while they were setting up for the final show? If so, I don't believe
it's on the soundtrack, and I'm not even sure what it is. Sorry. :(

Yes, I bet that was the one. It was certainly goofy. Could it have
been written especially for the movie? I doubt it...

Can anyone ID this song?

Hi Barry,
Sung by 'Lisa Houseman' (Jane Brucker) in Dirty Dancing movie.
It's a real song and I think this might be the title-
Holoholo Ka`a, I Wish They Didn't Mean Goodbye

I think it was written for the movie specifically, though I'm not sure.
Wasn't it about the resort where they were staying? I do remember she
wanted to sing "I Feel Pretty" in the talent show, but I don't think that's
what it was. (That song being from "West Side Story.")

I think the name of the song is "Hula Hana"(Hanna?), it's not even listed in
the credits as a song, let alone on the soundtrack. Baby's sister sang it in
a rehearsal for the season finale while Baby pretended to paint a palm tree.

Angeline,

I think you're the closest so far. I've found a copy of the script at
http://www.geocities.com/angbarb.geo/script.html. It gives some of the
words as:

Who’s this Hula hana, of kamana whala hula bay,
she will hula when you have a lovely gift she wants,
you’ll hear her say,
bring me a pineapple that doesn't sting
a bird that swims
a fish that sings,
I wanna I really wanna,
bring me a volcano that blows up all the molten lava and a blue
banana,
I canna canna

bring me a pineapple that doesn't sting
a bird that swims
a fish that sings,
I wanna, I really wanna,

bring me a volcano that blows up all the molten lava
and a blue banana,
I canna canna

Unfortunately, I can't find a song called 'Hula hana'. The title must
be something else.

Thanks for trying,
Barry

You should go now and rent the film and read the closing credits. They're
required to put the name of all songs performed and who performed them in
the closing credits of the film because of the copyright issues. Just
look for some Hawaiian song, and you should know which one it is then.

Oops. Sorry I didn't see that before I responded the first time.

Yeah, when the question was asked, I immediately recognized the song, and
searched the credits on my DVD version (bitchin' copy IMO) and no mention
whatsoever! I guess because it was sung by the actress they considered it
dialog(?!) Makes no sense to me. Ya know - if they can put the Kellerman
finale song on the CD, why not Hula Hana??? : )

It must not be a real song then, and the writers never felt inclined to
copyright it, or else it would be listed at the end, even if it were public
domain. I guess that means we can all record our own version of "Hula
Hannah"! Whoo-pee!
