I have the horrible feeling I'm asking for something that doesn't exist.

Hate to confirm that fear but yes, "Let's Go" by The Routers in 1962 was
basically instrumental with only that title repeated throughout. The
Ventures did play *mostly" "surf music" but they also charted with,
among others, "Theme From A Summer Place" plus a version of "Wild
Thing."

I believe this tune was covered by quite a few "surf" bands, although I don't
have the info to back that up at the moment.

Also -- and this is another comment I can't back up at the moment -- but I
believe the Ventures cover "Let's Go" on their latest effort, "Wild Again."
It's a terrific record with plenty of proof that the Ventures are no
has-beens. I particularly like the "Beethoven Five-O" version of Beethoven's
5th. Amazing playing.

The Ventures don't really consider themselves purely a surf band -- and I
think that's really a simplification when you've heard a lot of their stuff.
I'd say "Guitar Intstrumental Group" is the word. However, they did ride the
trends. They were one of the groups that launched the surf sound (with
"Walk, Don't Run" in 1960) ... and when surf boomed, they re-recorded the
song in 1964 to make it "surfier."

Legend has it they sang on a few of their songs in the very early days.
Someone told them not to do that because they'd established themselves as an
instrumental group and would be more successful sticking to it ... so they
stopped. However, I recently saw them play live in Detroit and they treated
us to 3 songs with vocals. Old standard 60's hits, nothing original ... but
they're not bad singers.

There are background singers on many of their records, but I don't think they
ever recorded anything with true lead vocals. If anyone knows otherwise,
please enlighten us!

Sorry, that's probably much more information than you wanted.
