Come and listen to a story 'bout a man named Jed,
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed.
And then one day, he was shootin' at some food,
And up through the ground come a bubblin' crude.
(Oil, that is. Black gold. Texas tea.)

Well the first thing ya know, ole Jed's a millionaire.
The kinfolk said, "Jed, move away from there!"
They said, "Californee is the place you oughta be!"
So they loaded up the truck, and they moved to Beverly.
(Hills, that is. Swimmin' pools, movie stars.)

(Lester Flatt / Earl Scruggs banjo bit here)

The closing theme:

Well now it's time to say goodbye to Jed and all his kin.
And they would like to thank you folks for kindly stoppin' in.
You're all invited back next week to this locality,
To have a heapin' helpin' of their hospitality.
(Come on in. Set a spell. Kick yer shoes off.)
(Y'all come back now, y'hear?)

Can't guarantee accuracy...that's all from memory, but I've heard it
countless times...was one of my favorite shows as a kid. Still would
be if I could find it anywhere. Have you heard the Weird Al Yankovic
parody of the theme, based on Dire Straits' "Money for Nothin'"?

This is from memory. Please excuse the errors.

The Ballad of Jed Clampett
by Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs

Come, and listen to my story 'bout a man named Jed,
A poor mountaineer barely kept his family fed.
And then one day he was shootin' at some food
When up from the eground came a bubblin' crude.

Oil, that is. Black gold. Texas tea.

Well, the first thing you know ol' Jed's a millionaire.
The kinfolk said "Jed! Move away from there!"
They said "Californy is the place ya oughtta be."
So they loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly.

Hills, that is. Swimmin' pools. Movie stars.

Just a note, I remember one time, cruising down the strip in Gatlinburg
Tenn. Cranking a CD of this song loud enough to rattle windows just to
get people to look at us. :-)
peace,
cwp.
