HONEY
=====
See the tree how big it's grown
But friend it hasn't been too long it wasn't big
I laughed at her and she got mad
The first day that she planted it was just a twig
Then the first snow came and she ran out
To brush the snow away so it wouldn't die
Came runnin' in all exited
Slipped and almost hurt herself and I laughed 'til I cried

She was always young at heart
Kind of dumb and kind a smart and I love her so
And I surprised her with a puppy
Kept me up all christmas eve two years ago
And it would sure embarrass her when
I came home from working late 'cause I would know
That she'd been sittin' there and cryin'
Over some sad and silly late late show

And Honey I miss you and I'm being good
And I'd love to be with you if only I could

She wrecked the car and she was sad
And so afraid that I'd be mad but what the heck
Though I pretended hard to be
Guess you could say she saw through me and hugged my neck
I came home unexpectedly
And caught her crying needlessly in the middle of the day
And it was in the early spring
When flowers bloom and Robin sing she went away

And Honey I miss you and I'm being good
And I'd love to be with you if only I could

One day while I was not home
While she was there and all alone the angels came
Now all I have is memories
Of Honey and I wake up nights and call her name
Now my life's an empty stage
Where Honey lived and Honey played and love grew up
And a small cloud passes over head
And cries down the flower bed that Honey loved

And see the tree how big it's grown
But friend it hasn't been too long it wasn't big
And Ilaughed at her and she got mad
The first day that she planted it was just a twig

ALONE AGAIN (NATURALLY)
=======================
In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top
To throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who-ever
What it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in the lurch
At a church with people saying
My God, that's tough, she stood him up
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally

To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful bright and gay
Looking forward - who wouldn't do?
The role I was about to play
And as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
Threw me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about God in his mercy
Who if He really does exist
Why did He desert me
In my hour of need
I truly am indeed
Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that there are more hearts broken in the world
Than can be mended
Left unattended
What do we do
What do we do

Looking back over the years
And whatever else appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide my tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start
With a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
When she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again naturally
Alone again... naturally

ANY DAY NOW
===========
Any day now I will hear you say "Goodbye, my love"
And you'll be on your way
Then my wild beautiful bird, you will have flown (Oh)
Any day now I'll be all alone (Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh)

Any day now, when your restless eyes meet someone new
(Oh) To my sad surprise
Then the blue shadows will fall all over town (Oh)
Any day now love will let me down (Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh)

Oh my wild beautiful bird, you will have flown (Oh)
Any day now I'll be all alone

I know I shouldn't want to keep you
If you don't want to stay-ay
Until you go forever
I'll be holding on for dear life
Holding you this way
Begging you to stay

Any day now when the clock strikes "Go"
You'll call it off
And then my tears will flow
Then the blue shadows will fall all over town (Oh)
Any day now love will let me down 'cos you won't be around

Don't fly away, my beautiful bird
Don't, don't fly away

Daisy a Day is a really sad song (Judd Strunk?)
James Taylor sings a song called "Me and my machine" (or something
like that.

Many (most) of the songs from Les Miserables are really sad. The saddest (IMO)
are Fantine's death, (mother on her deathbed, in and out of reality, agonizes
over the young daughter she hasn't seen in years) "Drink With Me", (freedom
fighters, facing certain death, having one last drink together); "Empty Chairs at
Empty Tables" (surviving freedom fighter anguishes over his dead friends). The
list goes on...

A song called "the saddest song ever written" is "Old Shep",
about a boy and his dog. The dog gets sick and has to be
put to death. I can't remember all the lyrics, but the
last part of the song goes

With a hand that was heavy I lifted my gun
and I aimed it at Shep's faithful head
but I just couldn't do it, I wanted to run
I wished they would shoot me instead

now Old Shep is gone where the good doggies go
and no more with my friend will I roam
but if dogs have a heaven, there's one thing I know
Old Shep has a wonderful home.

How's this for sad: two children are abducted, abandoned
in the woods, and eventually die alone, never to be found?

POOR BABIES IN THE WOODS

My dear, did you know a long time ago
two babies, whose names I don't know
were stolen away one bright summer day
and left in the woods, so I heard people say

[.....?..... ]
they sobbed and they sighed, and they bitterly cried

and when they were dead, the robins so read
took strawberry leaves and over them spread
Poor babies in the woods
poor babies in the woods
now won't you remember those babies in the woods?

LOVE ME LOVE ME LOVE
Sung by Frank Mills, circa 1970

Standing on a corner, just to pass the time of day
I thought I heard an organ grinder singing as he played
he had a little monkey with a little cup of tin
and he danced for joy when someone put a penny in

He sang "Love me love me love, why did you ever leave me girl?
If you love me love me love, why did you ever go?"

I couldn't help but wonder how the old man got his song
what tragic tale of lonliness, how fate had done him wrong
whatever made the old man want to brave the cold and rain
and tell the world his story, till death could ease the pain

He sang....

I went back to the corner, just to hear the organ play
a policeman said the old man died one cold November day
I waited for a minute then I sadly walked away
though I couldn't see the old man, I'm sure I heard him say

"Love me love me love....."

This is one of the saddest songs I know.

Emma (Sisters of Mercy)

We were together since we were five
She was so pretty
Emma was a star in everyone's eyes
And when she said she'd be a movie queen
Nobody laughed
With her face like an angel
She could be anything

CHORUS
Emmaline
Emma
Emmaline
I'm gonna write your name high on the silver screen
Emmaline
Emma
Emmaline
I'm gonna make you the biggest star this world has ever seen

At seventeen
We were wed
And I worked hard to earn our daily bread
And every day
Emma would go out searching for that play
That never, ever came her way
And sometimes she come home and she'd be so depressed
I'd hear her crying in the back room and be so distressed
And I'd remember back when she was five
To the words that used to make Emmaline come alive
It was...

CHORUS

It was a cold and dark December night
When I opened up the bedroom door
To find her lying
Cold and still upon the bed
A love letter lying on the bedroom floor
IT read,
"Darling I love you
But I just can't keep living on dreams no more
I've tried so hard not to leave you alone
But I just can't keep trying no more"
CHORUS

Tears In Heaven
by: Eric Clapton

Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand if I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand if I saw you in heaven?
I'll find my way through night and day,
'Cause I know I just can't stay here in heaven.

Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart, have you begging please, begging please.

Beyond the door there's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more tears in heaven.

Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same if I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong here in heaven.

Someday Never Comes
by: Creedence Clearwater Revival

First thing I remember was asking papa, why,
For there were many things I didn't know.
And daddy always smiled and took me by the hand,
Saying, someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,
'Cause someday never comes.

Well, time and tears went by and I collected dust.
For there were many things I didn't know.
When daddy went away, he said, try to be a man,
And someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,
'Cause someday never comes.

And then one day in April, I wasn't even there,
For there were many things I didn't know.
A son was born to me. Mama held his hand,
Sayin' someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,
'Cause someday never comes.

Think it was September, the year I went away,
For there were many things I didn't know.
And still I see him standing tryin' to be a man,
I said, someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,
'Cause someday never comes.

Candle In The Wind
by: Elton John

Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did

Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died
Oh the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude

Goodbye Norma Jean
From the young man in the 22nd row
Who sees you as something as more than sexual
More than just our Marilyn Monroe

New York Mining Disaster 1941
by: The BeeGees

In the event of something happening to me,
there is something I would like you all to see.
It's just a photograph of someone that I new.

Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?
Do you know what it's like on the outside?
Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide, Mr. Jones.

I keep straining my ears to hear a sound.
Maybe someone is digging underground,
or have they given up and all gone home to bed,
thinking those who once existed must be dead.

Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?
Do you know what it's like on the outside?
Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide, Mr. Jones.

In the event of something happening to me,
there is something I would like you all to see.
It's just a photograph of someone that I knew.

Have you seen my wife, Mr. Jones?
Do you know what it's like on the outside?
Don't go talking too loud, you'll cause a landslide, Mr. Jones.

How Can You Mend A Broken Heart
by: The BeeGees

I can think of younger days when living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do.
I could never see tomorrow, but I was never told about the sorrow.

And how can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?

How can you mend a this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live again.

I can still feel the breeze that rustles through the trees
And misty memories do days gone by
We could never see tomorrow, no one said a word about the sorrow.

And how can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?

How can you mend this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live again.

I Can't See Nobody
by: The BeeGees

I walk the lonely streets; I watch the people passing by.
I used to smile and say hello. Guess I was just a happy guy.
Then you happened, girl, this feeling that possesses me.
I just can't move myself. I guess it all just had to be.

I can't see nobody...no, I can't see nobody.
Mine eyes can only look at you...you.

I used to have a brain; I used to think of many things.
I watched the falling rain and listened to the sweet birds sing.
Don't ask me why, little girl. I love you and that's all I can say.
You're ev'ry ,ev'ry breath I take. You are my nights; my night and day.

I can't see nobody...no, I can't see nobody.
Mine eyes can only look at you...you.

Every single word you hear...is coming from this heart of mine.
I never felt like this before...a love like yours so young and fine.
And now as I try to forget you...it doesn't work out any way.
I loved you such a long time ago...but in my eyes you'll always be.
Every single word you hear...is coming from this heart of mine.
I loved you such a long time ago...don't know why...
And I don't know why...baby...

I can't see nobody...no, I can't see nobody.
Mine eyes can only look at you...you.
I can't see nobody...no, I can't see nobody.
Mine eyes can only look at you...you.

I Started A Joke
by: The BeeGees

I started a joke, which started the whole world crying,
but I didn't see that the joke was on me, oh no.

I started to cry, which started the whole world laughing,
oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me.

I looked at the skies, running my hands over my eyes,
and I fell out of bed, hurting my head from things that I'd said.

Til I finally died, which started the whole world living,
oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was on me.

I looked at the skies, running my hands over my eyes,
and I fell out of bed, hurting my head from things that I'd said.

'Til I finally died, which started the whole world living,
oh, if I'd only seen that the joke was one me.

I've Got To Get A Message To You
by: The BeeGees

The preacher taunted me and he smiled,
Said, "Come and walk with me, come and walk one more mile.
Now for once in your life you're alone,
now you ain't got a dime, there's no time for the phone."

I've just got to get a message to you, hold on, hold on.
One more hour and my life will be through, hold on, hold on.

I told him I'm in no hurry,
but if I broke her heart, won't you tell her I'm sorry.
And for once in my life I'm alone,
and I've got to let her know just in time before I go.

I've just go to get a message to you, hold on, hold on.
One more hour and my life will be through, oh la, oh la.

Well I laughed but that didn't work,
and it's only her love that keeps me wearing this hurt.
Now I'm crying but deep down inside,
well I did it to him, now it's my turn to die.

I've just got to get a message to you, hold on, hold on.
One more hour and my life will be through, hold on, hold on.

Nights On Broadway
by: The BeeGees

Here we are in the room full of strangers,
Standing in the dark where your eyes couldn't see me

Well, I have to follow you
Though you didn't want me to.
But that won't stop my lovin' you
I can't stay away

Blaming it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them love songs,
Singin' them straight to the heart songs.
Blamin' it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them sweet sounds
To that crazy, crazy town.

Now in my place
There are so many others
Standin' in the line;
How long will they stand between us?

Well, I have to follow you
Though you didn't want me to.
But that won't stop my lovin' you
I can't stay away

Blaming it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them love songs,
Singin' them straight to the heart songs.
Blamin' it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them sweet sounds
To that crazy, crazy town.

I will wait,
even if it takes forever;
I will wait,
even if it takes a life time.
Somehow I feel inside
You never ever left my side.
Make it like it was before
Even if it takes a life time, takes a life time.

Blaming it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them love songs,
Singin' them straight to the heart songs.
Blamin' it all on the nights on Broadway
Singin' them sweet sounds
To that crazy, crazy town.

Alone
by: The BeeGees

I was a midnight rider on a cloud of smoke
I could make a woman hang on every single stroke
I was an iron man, I had a master plan
But I was alone

I could hear you breathing with a sigh of the wind
I remember how your body started tremblin'
Oh what a night it's been!
And for the state I'm in, I'm still alone

And all the wonders made for the Earth
And all the hearts in all creation
Somehow I always end up alone
Always end up alone

So I play, I'll wait 'cause you know that love takes time
We came so far, just the beat of a lonely heart
And it's mine
And I don't wanna be alone

Well since I got no message on your answer phone
Since you're busy every minute, I just stay at home
I make believe you care, I feel you everywhere
But I'm still alone

I'm on a wheel of fortune with a twist of fate
'Cause I know it isn't heaven, is it love or hate?
Am I the subject of the pain? Am I the stranger in the rain?
I am alone

And is there glory there to behold?
Maybe it's my imagination
Another story there to be told

So I play, I'll wait and I pray it's not too late
We came so far, just the beat of a lonely heart
And it's mine
And I don't wanna be alone

And all the wonders made for the Earth
And all the hearts in all creation
Another story there to be told

So I play, I'll wait and I pray it's not too late
We came so far, just the beat of a lonely heart
And it's mine
And I don't wanna be alone

Gone but not out of sight
I'm caught in the rain and there's no one home

Face the heat of the night
The one that you love's got a heart that's made of stone

Shine and search for the light
And sooner or later you'll be cruising on your ocean

And clean out of sight
I'm caught in the rain and there's no one home

Face the heat of the night...(repeat to fade)

The End of the Innocence
by: Don Henley

Remember when the days were long
And rolled beneath a deep blue sky
Didn't have a care in the world
With mommy and daddy standin' by
But "happily ever after" fails
And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers dwell on small details
Since daddy had to fly

But I know a place where we can go
That's still untouched by men
We'll sit and watch the clouds roll by
And the tall grass wave in the wind
You can lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair fall all around me
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence

O' beautiful, for spacious skies
But now those skies are threatening
They're beating plowshares into swords
For this tired old man that we elected king
Armchair warriors often fail
And we've been poisoned by these fairy tales
The lawyers clean up all details
Since daddy had to lie

But I know a place where we can go
And wash away this sin
We'll sit and watch the clouds roll by
And the tall grass wave in the wind
Just lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair spill all around me
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence

Who knows how long this will last
Now we've come so far, so fast
But, somewhere back there in the dust
That same small town in each of us
I need to remember this
So baby give me just one kiss
And let me take a long last look
Before we say goodbye

Just lay your head back on the ground
And let your hair fall all around me
Offer up your best defense
But this is the end
This is the end of the innocence

The Boys Of Summer
by: Don Henley

Nobody on the road
Nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
The summer's out of reach
Empty lake, empty streets
The sun goes down alone
I'm drivin' by your house
Though I know you're not at home

But I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
You got your hair combed back and your sunglasses on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

I never will forget those nights
I wonder if it was a dream
Remember how you made me crazy?
Remember how I made you scream
Now I don't understand what happened to our love
But babe, I'm gonna get you back
I'm gonna show you what I'm made of

I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
I see you walkin' real slow and you're smilin' at everyone
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

Out on the road today, I saw a DEADHEAD sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice Inside my head said, "Don't look back. You can never look
back."
I thought I knew what love was
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but-

I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
You got that top pulled down and that radio on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
You got that hair slicked back and those Wayfarers on, baby
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

After The Thrill Is Gone
by: Eagles

Same dances in the same old shoes,
some habits that you just can't lose.
There's no telling what a man might use
after the thrill is gone.

The flame rises but it soon descends,
empty pages and a frozen pen.
You're not quite lovers and you're not quite friends
after the thrill is gone, oh, after the thrill is gone.

What can you do when your dreams come true
and it's not quite like you planned?
O-OH What have you done to be losing the one,
you held it so tight in your hand, well.

Time passes and you must move on,
half the distance takes you twice as long.
So you keep on singing for the sake of the song
after the thrill is gone.

You're afraid you might fall out of fashion
and you're feeling cold and small.
O-OH Any kind of love without passion,
that ain't no kind of loving at all, well.

Same dances in the same old shoes,
you get too careful with the steps you choose.
You don't care about winning but you don't want to lose
after the thrill is gone, after the thrill is gone,
after the thrill is gone, oh, after the thrill is gone.

I Can't Tell You Why
by: Eagles

Look at us baby, up all night
Tearing our love apart
Aren't we the same two people who lived
through years in the dark? Ooh-oh

Every time I try to walk away
Somethin' makes me turn around and stay
And I can't tell you why

When we get crazy, it just ain't right
(Try to keep your head, little girl)
Girl, I get lonely too
You don't have to worry, just hold on tight
(Don't get caught in your little world)
'Cause I love you

Nothin's wrong as far as I can see
We make it harder than it has to be
And I can't tell you why -no,baby
I can't tell you why
I can't tell you why

Every time I try to walk away
Somethin' makes me turn around and stay
And I can't tell you why, no, no, baby
I can't tell you why
I can't tell you why
I can't tell you why

The Sad Cafe
by: Eagles

Out in the shiny night the rain was
softly falling
The tracks that ran down the boulevard
had all been washed away
Out of the silver light the past came
softly calling
And I remembered the times we spent
Inside the Sad Cafe

Oh, it seemed like a holy place
Protected by amazing grace
And we would sing right out loud
The things we could not say
We thought we could change this world
With words like "love" and "freedom"
We were part of the lonely crowd
Inside the Sad Cafe

Oh, expecting to fly
We would meet on that beautiful shore
in the sweet by and by
Some of their dreams came true
Some just passed away
And some of them stayed behind
Inside the Sad Cafe

The clouds rolled in and hid that shore
Now that Glory Train, it don't
stop here no more

Now I look at the years gone by
And wonder at the powers that be
I don't know why fortune smiles on some
And lets the rest go free

Maybe the time has drawn the faces I recall
But things in this life change very
slowly if they ever change at all
There's no use in asking why
It just turned out that way
So meet me at midnight, baby
Inside the Sad Cafe
Why don't you meet me at midnight, baby
Inside the Sad Cafe

Desperado
by: Eagles

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses,
You've been out ridin fences for so long now,
Oh and you're a hard one, but I know that you've got your reasons,
The things that are pleasin' you can hurt you somehow.

Don't you draw the Queen of Diamonds boy, she'll beat you if she's able.
You know the Queen of Hearts is always your best bet.
Now it seems to me some fine things have been laid upon your table,
But you only want the ones you can't get.

Desperado, you ain't gettin no younger,
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin you home,
And freedom, oh freedom, well that's just some people talkin.
Your prison is walking through this world all alone.

Don't your feet get cold in the wintertime,
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine,
It's hard to tell the nighttime from the day.
And you're losin all your highs and lows,
Ain't it funny how the feelin goes away?

Desperado, why don't you come to your senses,
Come down from your fences- open the gates.
It may be rainin, but there's a rainbow above you.
You'd better let somebody love you,
LET SOMEBODY LOVE YOU.
You'd better let somebody love you,
before it's too late.

The Last Resort
by: Eagles

She came from Providence, the one in Rhode Island
where the old world shadows hang heavy in the air.
She packed her hopes and dreams like a refugee,
just as her father came across the sea.

She heard about a place people were smilin',
they spoke about the red man's way, how they loved the land.
And they came from everywhere to the Great Divide
seeking a place to stand or a place to hide.

Down in the crowded bars out for a good time,
can't wait to tell you all what it's like up there.
And they called it paradise, I don't know why.
Somebody laid the mountains low while the town got high.

Then the chilly winds blew down across the desert,
through the canyons of the coast to the Malibu
where the pretty people play hungry for power
to light their neon way and give them things to do.

Some rich man came and raped the land, nobody caught 'em,
put up a bunch of ugly boxes and, Jesus, people bought 'em.
And they called it paradise, the place to be,
they watched the hazy sun sinking in the sea.

You can leave it all behind and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did so many years ago.
They even brought a neon sign 'Jesus is Coming',
brought the white man's burden down, brought the white man's reign.

Who will provide the grand design, what is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier, we have got to make it here.
We satisfy our endless needs and justify our bloody deeds
in the name of destiny and in the name of God.

And you can see them there on Sunday morning
stand up and sing about what it's like up there.
They called it paradise, I don't know why.
You call some place paradise - kiss it goodbye.

Time in a Bottle
by: Jim Croce

if I could save time in a bottle
the first thing that I'd like to do
is to save every day 'til eternity passes away
just to spend them with you

if I could make days last forever
if words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day like a treasure and then
again I would spend them with you

but there never seems to be enough time to do the
things you want once you find them
I've looked around enough to know that
you're the one I want to go through time with

if I had a box just for wishes
and dreams that had never come true
the box would be empty except for the memories
of how they were answered by you

but there never seems to be enough time to do the
things you want once you find them
I've looked around enough to know
that you're the one I want to go through time with

I think the saddest song I ever heard was "At Seventeen" by Janice Ian.
Also, "Run, Joey, Run". I don't remember who sang it. I had it on a
K-Tel record in the mid '70's.

Two others I just thought of. "One Tin Soldier" (I can't remember who
sang it) and, of course, "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon
Lightfoot.

My personal choices for sad songs:

While just about any Harry Chapin song can reduce me to tears
as I miss his voice so much, here are a couple of really sad ones:

Sequel
from the album "Sequel" (his last album)

So here she's actin' happy inside her handsome home
And me, I'm flyin' in my taxi, takin' tips and gettin' stoned

I got into town a little early
Had eight hours to kill before the show
First I thought about heading up north of the bay
Then I knew where I had to go

I thought about taking a limousine
Or at least a fancy car
But I ended up taking a taxi
'Cause that's how I got this far

You see, ten years ago it was the front seat
Drivin' stoned and feelin' no pain
Now here I am straight and sittin' in the back
Hitting Sixteen Parkside Lane

The driveway was the same as I remembered
And a butler came and answered the door
He just shook his head when I asked for her
And said "She doesn't live here anymore."

But he offered to give me the address
That they were forwarding her letters to
I just took it and returned to the cabbie
And said "I got one more fare for you."

And so we rolled back into the city
Up to a five storey old brownstone
I rang the bell that had her name on the mailbox
The buzzer said somebody's home

And the look on her face as she opened the door
Was like an old joke told by a friend
It'd taken ten more years but she'd found her smile
And I watched the corners start to bend

And she said, "How are you Harry?
Haven't we played this scene before?"
I said "It's so good to see you, Sue
Had to play it out just once more."
Play it out just once more

She said "I've heard you flying high on my radio"
I answered "It's not all it seems"
That's when she laughed and she said, "It's better sometimes
When we don't get to touch our dreams"

That's when I asked her where was that actress
She said "That was somebody else"
And then I asked her why she looked so happy now
She said "I finally like myself, at last I like myself."

So we talked all through that afternoon
Talking about where we'd been
We talked of the tiny difference
Between ending and starting to begin
We talked 'cause talking tells you things
Like what you really are thinking about
But sometimes you can't find what you're feeling
Till all the words run out

So I asked her to come to the concert
She said "No, I work at night."
I said, "We've gotten too damn good at leaving, Sue"
She said, "Harry, you're right."

Don't ask me if I made love to her
Or which one of us started to cry
Don't ask me why she wouldn't take the money that I left
If I answered at all I'd lie

So I thought about her as I sang that night
And how the circle keeps rolling around
How I act as I'm facing the footlights
And how she's flying with both feet on the ground

I guess it's a sequel to our story
From the journey 'tween heaven and hell
With half the time thinking of what might have been
and half thinkin' just as well
I guess only time will tell

Story Of A Life
from the album "Sequel"

I can see myself it's a golden sunrise
Young boy open up your eyes
It's supposed to be your day
Now off you go horizon bound
And you won't stop until you've found
Your own kind of way
And the wind will whip your tousled hair
The sun, the rain, the sweet despair
Great tales of love and strife
And somewhere on your path to glory
You will write your story of a life

And all the towns that you walk through
And all the people that you talk to
Sing you their songs
And there are times you change your stride
There are times you can't decide
Still you go on
And then the young girls dance their gypsy tunes
And share the secrets of the moon
So soon you find a wife
And though she sees your dreams go poorly
Still she joins your story of a life

So you settle down and the children come
And you find a place that you come from
Your wandering is done
And all your dreams of open spaces
You find in your children's faces
One by one
And all the trips you know you missed
And all the lips you never kissed
Cut through you like a knife
And now you see stretched out before thee
Just another story of a life

So what do you do now?
When she looks at you now?
You know those same old jokes all the jesters tell
You tell them to her now
And all the same old songs all the mistrels sang
You sing 'em to her now
But it don't matter anyhow
'Cause she knows by now

So every chance you take don't mean a thing
What variations can you bring
To this shopworn melody
And every year goes by like a tollin' bell
It's battered merchandise you sell
Not well, she can see
And though she's heard it all a thousand times
Couched in your attempted ryhmes
She'll march to your drum and fife
But the question echoes up before me
Where's the magic story of a life?

Now sometimes words can serve me well
Sometimes words can go to hell
For all that they do
And for every dream that took me high
There's been a dream that's passed me by
I know it's so true
And I can see it clear out to the end
And I'll whisper to her now again
Because she shared my life
For more than all the ghosts of glory
She makes up the story
She's the only story
Of my life

Tangled Up Puppet
originally found on the album "Portrait Gallery"

I'm a tangled up puppet
Spinning round in knots
And the more I see what I used to be
The less of you I've got

There was a time that you curled up in my lap like a child
You'd cling to me smiling, your eyes wide and wild
Now you slip through my arms, wave a passing hello
Twist away and toss a kiss, laughing as you go

You used to say "Read me a story and sing me songs of love"
For you were Princess Paradise on the wings of a dove
Now I chase you and tease you trying to remake you my own
But you just turn away and say "please leave me alone."

And I'm a tangled up puppet
All hanging in your strings
I'm a butterfly in a spider's web
Fluttering my wings

And the more that I keep dancing
And spinning round in knots
The more I see what I used to be
And the less of you I've got

You are a drawer full of makeup and rinses and things
You keep changing your moods like your earrings and rings
But tonight while we played tag for five minutes in the yard
Just for a moment I caught you off guard
But now you write your secret poems
In a room just for your dreams
You don't find time to talk to me
About the things you mean
And what I mean is

I have watched you take shape from a jumble of parts
And find the grace and form of a fine work of art
Hey, you, my brand new woman, newly come into your own
Don't you know that you don't need to grow up all alone

This one's always been a killer to me, I'm an old softie:

Diary
sung by Bread

I found her diary underneath a tree
And started reading about me
The words she'd written took me by surprise
You'd never read them in her eyes
They said that she had found the love she waited for
Wouldn't you know it, she wouldn't show it

When she confronted with the writing there
Simply pretended not to care
I passed it off as just in keeping with
Her total disconcerting air
And though she tried to hide
The love that she denied
Wouldn't you know it, she wouldn't show it
And as I go through my life
I will give to her my wife
All the sweet things that I can find

I found her diary underneath a tree
And started reading about me
The words began stick and tears to flow
Her meaning now was clear to see
The love she'd waited for was someone else not me
Wouldn't you know it, she wouldn't show it
And as I go through my life
I will wish for her his wife
All the sweet things that she can find
All the sweet things they can find

A couple of tunes that were sad before the man was killed,
even sadder in retrospect:

I'm Sorry
words and music by John Denver
from the album "Windsong"

It's cold here in the city
It always seems that way
And I've been thinking about you
Almost every day

Thinking about the good times
Thinking about the rain
Thinking about how bad it feels
Alone again

I'm sorry for the way things are in China
I'm sorry things ain't what they used to be
But more than anything else, I'm sorry for myself
'Cause you're not here with me

Our friends all ask about you
I say you're doing fine
I expect to hear from you
Almost anytime

But they all know I'm crying
That I can't sleep at night
They all know I'm dying
Down deep inside

I'm sorry for all the lies I told you
I'm sorry for the things I didn't say
But more than anything else, I'm sorry for myself
I can't believe you went away

I'm sorry if I took something for granted
I'm sorry for the chains I put on you
But more than anything else, I'm sorry for myself
For living without you

Poems, Prayers And Promises
words & music by John Denver
from the album of the same name

I've been lately thinking about my life's time
All the things I've done and how it's been
And I can't help believin' in my own mind
I know I'm gonna hate to see it end
I've seen a lot of sunshine, slept out in the rain
Spent a night or two all on my own
I've known my lady's pleasures, had myself some friends
Spent a time or two in my own home

I have to say it now it's been good life all in all
It's really fine to have a chance to hang around
And lie there by the fire and watch the evening tire
While all my friends and my old lady sit and pass a pipe around
And talk of poems and prayers and promises
And things that we believe in, how sweet it is to love someone
How right it is to care, how long it's been since yesterday
What about tomorrow and what about our dreams
And all the memories we share

Days they pass so quickly now, the nights are seldom long
Time around me whispers when it's cold
The changes somehow frighten me, still I have to smile
It turns me on to think of growing old
It's tho' my life's been good to me there's still so much to do
So many things my mind has never known
I'd like to raise a family I'd like to sail away
Dance across the mountains on the moon

And, if you thought you were going to escape this message without an
Elton John tune, you don't recognize my handle ;-) Heeeeere we go:

I Feel Like A Bullet (In The Gun Of Robert Ford)
music by Elton John, lyrics by Bernie Taupin
from the album "Rock Of The Westies"

Like a corn in a field I cut you down
I threw the last punch too hard
After years of going steady, well I thought that it was time
To throw in my hand for a new set of cards

And I can't take you dancing out on the weekend
I figured we'd painted too much of this town
And I tried not to look as I walked to my wagon
And I knew then I had lost what should have been found
I knew then I had lost what should have been found

And I feel like a bullet in the gun of Robert Ford
I'm low as a paid assassin is
You know I'm cold as a hired sword
I'm so ashamed we can't patch it up
You know I can't think straight no more
You make me feel like a bullet honey in the gun of Robert Ford

Like a child when his toy's been stepped on
That's how it all seemed to me
I burst the bubble that both of us lived in
And I'm damned if I'll ever get rid of this guilt that I feel

And if looks could kill then I'd be a dead man
Your friends and mine don't call no more
Hell, I thought it was best but now I feel branded
Breaking up's sometimes like breaking the law
Breaking up's sometimes like breaking the law

Talking Old Soldiers
music by Elton John, lyrics by Bernie Taupin
from the album "Tumbleweed Connection"

Why hello, say can I buy you another glass of beer
Well thanks a lot that's kind of you, it's nice to know you care
These days there's so much going on
No one seems to want to know
I may be just an old soldier to some
But I know how it feels to grow old

Yeah that's right, you can see me here most every night
You'll always see me staring at the walls and at the lights
Funny I remember oh it's years ago I'd say
I'd stand at that bar with my friends who've passed away
And drink three times the beer that I can drink today
Yes I know how it feels to grow old

I know what they're saying son
There goes old mad Joe again
Well I may be mad at that I've seen enough
To make a man go out his brains
Well do they know what it's like
To have a graveyard as a friend?
`Cause that's where they are boy, all of them
Don't seem likely I'll get friends like that again

Well it's time I moved off
But it's been great just listening to you
And I might even see you next time I'm passing through
You're right there's so much going on
No one seems to want to know
So keep well, keep well old friend
And have another drink on me
Just ignore all the others you got your memories
You got your memories

The Last Song
music by Elton John, lyrics by Bernie Taupin
from the album "The One"

Yesterday you came to lift me up
As light as straw and brittle as a bird
Today I weigh less than a shadow on the wall
Just one more whisper of a voice unheard

Tomorrow leave the windows open
As fear grows please hold me in your arms
Won't you help me if you can to shake this anger
I need your gentle hands to keep me calm

'Cause I never thought I'd lose
I only thought I'd win
I never dreamed I'd feel
This fire beneath my skin
I can't believe you love me
I never thought you'd come
I guess I misjudged love
Between a father and his son

Things we never said come together
The hidden truth no longer haunting me
Tonight we touched on the things that were never spoken
That kind of understanding sets me free

Skyline Pigeon
music by Elton John, lyrics by Bernie Taupin
from the album "Empty Sky"

Turn me loose from your hands
Let me fly to distant lands
Over green fields, trees and mountains
Flowers and forest fountains
Home along the lanes of the skyway

For this dark and lonely room
Projects a shadow cast in gloom
And my eyes are mirrors
Of the world outside
Thinking of the way
That the wind can turn the tide
And these shadows turn
From purple into grey

For just a Skyline Pigeon
Dreaming of the open
Waiting for the day
He can spread his wings
And fly away again
Fly away skyline pigeon fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind

Just let me wake up in the morning
To the smell of new mown hay
To laugh and cry, to live and die
In the brightness of my day

I want to hear the pealing bells
Of distant churches sing
But most of all please free me
From this aching metal ring
And open out this cage towards the sun

Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)
music by Elton John, lyrics by Bernie Taupin
from the album "Jump Up"
written for John Lennon

What happened here
As the New York sunset disappeared
I found an empty garden among the flagstones there
Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And now it all looks strange
It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain

And what's it for
This little empty garden by the brownstone door
And in the cracks along the sidewalk nothing grows no more
Who lived here
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
And we are so amazed we're crippled and we're dazed
A gardener like that one no one can replace

And I've been knocking but no one answers
And I've been knocking most all the day
Oh and I've been calling oh hey hey Johnny
Can't you come out to play

And through their tears
Some say he farmed his best in younger years
But he'd have said that roots grow stronger if only he could hear
Who lived there
He must have been a gardener that cared a lot
Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop
Now we pray for rain, and with every drop that falls
We hear, we hear your name

Johnny can't you come out to play in your empty garden

That's it, I'm well past my bandwidth limit I'm sure :-) Not every sad song
I know, but a few you may wish to investigate, hope it helps.

I like(d) Harry Chapin, too. I was very disappointed that
"Six String Orchestra" and "10,000 Pounds of Bananas"
didn't make it onto his double-CD set. But "Sequel"?
a little hokey, if you ask me. "Taxi" was/is a classic.
He should have left well enough alone, IMHO.
Besides, it's not really a sad song.

You were asking for sad songs. One of the saddest songs I know is the
following song. Perhaps my translation is not good, because it may sound
whiny, or mushy, or melodramatic. I don't think it sounds that way in
Japanese. In fact, the first time I heard it, it sent sent chills down my
spine, so I thought I'd try to share it with you. The lyrics are on the
left, and a loose translation is on the right.

Anyway--I just must dis-agree on this "Truly Sad Songs" titles..

Because, although it was once a mainstream chart topping hit--it really
wasn't
until I actually read the lyrics "Printed Out"--that I realized the
saddest
song I probably ever heard was:

"Alone Again., .. Naturally"

By: Gilbert O'Sullivan

as follows:
********

Alone Again (Naturally)

Within a little while from now

If I’m not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower

And climbing to the top will throw myself off

In an effort to make it clear to who

Ever what it’s like when you’re shattered
Left standing in the lurch by the church
With people saying: "My God, that’s tough
She’s tored him up"

No point in us remaining

You may as well go home
Cause I did on my own
Alone again, naturaly

To think that only yesterday

I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to wouldn’t do

The role I was about to play

But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much, as a mere touch
Cut me into little peaces
Leaving me to doubt
About God and His mercy
Or if He really does exist

Why did He desert me

And in my hour of need

I truly am indeed
Alone again, naturally

It seems to me that there are more hearts

broken in the world that can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?

Alone again, naturally

And looking back over the years
When everyone stands and fears

I remember I cried when my father died

Never wishing to dry the tears

And at sixty-five years old

My mother, God rest her soul,

Couldn’t understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken

Leaving her to stop with a heart so badly broken

Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken

And when she passed away

I cried and cried all day

Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

I definately agree with "Alone Again (Naturally)". I used to cry
whenever I heard it. There are two others I forgot to mention.
"Wildfire" by Michel Martin Murphy" and "Sideshow" by ... I can't
remember. The chorus went "...Let the sideshow begin, hurry hurry, step
right on in, can't afford to pass it by, guaranteed to make you cry..".

Half of Harry Chapin's songs are incredibly sad as well.

Run Joey Run was by David Geddes (and more sappy than sad, IMHO.)
Sideshow was by Blue Magic
Here are the lyrics...

Step right up hurry hurry
Before the show begins
My friends
Stand in line get you ticket
I hope you will attend
It'll only cost you fifty cents to see
What life has done to those like you and me

See the girl with the broken heart
You see that she is sad
She hurts so bad
See the man who has lost
The only love he ever had
There's got to be no sadder show to see
No doubt about it satisfaction guaranteed
So let the side show begin (hurry hurry)
Step right on in
Can't afford to pass it by
Guaranteed to make you cry

See the man who's been crying for a million years
So many tears
See the girl who's collecting
Broken hearts for souveniers
It's more exciting than a one-man band
The saddest little show in all the land
So let the sideshow begin (hurry hurry)
Step right on in
Can't afford to pass it by
Guaranteed to make you cry

Another sad song that's high on my list...

I'm So Lonesome I could Cry
by Hank Williams

Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whistlin' low
And I'm so lonesome I could cry

Have you ever seen a night so long
The time goes crawlin' by
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hang his head and cry

Have you ever heard a robin weep
When leaves begin to die
It's cause he's lost the will to live
And I'm so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry

I'm still in the dark ages, I don't have a CD player ;-) But, these two
can be found on "Verities & Balderdash".

>But "Sequel"? a little hokey, if you ask me. "Taxi" was/is a classic.
>He should have left well enough alone, IMHO.
>Besides, it's not really a sad song.

To each his own, I guess, and I didn't include "Taxi" as I was trying to
broaden people's horizons, introduce them to tunes they may not be
familiar with. IMHO, "Sequel" contains a couple of sad lines, namely:

That's when she laughed and she said, "It's better sometimes

When we don't get to touch our dreams."

I guess it's a sequel to our story
From the journey 'tween heaven and hell
With half the time thinking of what might have been

and half thinkin' just as well.
I guess only time will tell.

The last line, sung to the hilt by Harry on the album, always makes me
cry as I hear it knowing he never had "time" to tell the story as it may
have unfolded. *sniff* Okay, sue me, I'm a softie.

The Country Gentlemen did an album that was mostly sad songs.
Things like "The Fisherman's Wife" and "The Galveston Flood" and
"The Schoolhouse Fire". Paul in Portland OR

You guys are getting me really nostalgic here. I remember the summer Harry
died. I sat there stunned for a little while, but was thrilled with all the
airplay "Taxi" got that summer. And that was the first I had heard
"Sequel".
But getting back to the thread, does anyone else think that "It Was A Very
Good Year" by The Kingston Trio qualifies as a sad song, or am I going back
too far again?

To me, one of the saddest songs I've ever heard is from Les Miserables and
it's called "On My Own". Maybe it's because I can really relate to it, I
don't know....

ON MY OWN
Eponine:
And now I'm all alone again
Nowhere to go, no one to turn to
I did not want your money sir
I came out here cos I was told to
And now the night is near. Now I can make
believe he's here.
Sometimes I walk alone at night when
everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I'm happy with the
company I'm keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head
On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me
In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me for ever and forever
And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say there's a way for us
I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone, the river's just a river
Without him the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere the streets
are full of strangers
I love him
But everyday I'm learning
All my life I've only been pretending
Without me, his world will go on turning
The world is full of happiness that I have
never known
I love him, I love him, I love him... but only
on my own

No, your not going back too far! Howvever, I didn't know this song was
done by the Kingston Trio, my mother had it on record by Frank Sanatra.
You are correct it is a very sad song!

I just wanted to say that I agree with Jamie. It's the saddest song
I've ever heard. Well, almost the saddest. It's definitely on my top
12 list of sad songs.

God, I'm so depressed now. We need a happy songs thread.

Yeah, I've heard Frank's rendition, but I first found it in a Kingston Trio
songbook my dad had. I think Bob Shane sings lead, but I can't be sure.
It's been WAY too long since I've heard it. Thank God for my amazing brain
that remembers nothing but song lyrics! (maybe that's why I flunked
math...hhhmmmmmm)

how about sad song by Lou Reed off Berlin!!!

staring at my picture book
she looked like mary queen of scots
she seemed very regal to me
just goes to show how wrong you can be

I'm gonna stop wasting my time
somebody else would have broken both her arms

sad song, sad song, sad song, sad song

my castle kids and home
she looked like mary queen of scots
I tried so very hard
just goes to show how wrong you can be

I'm gonna stop wasting my time
somebody else would have broken both her arms

sad song, sad song, sad song, sad song

Sung by Big Bird

Love is what you feel
When you feel you sing
Love is what you feel
About your most favorite thing
Love is a feeling
Everybody likes to feel
Yes love is a really good feeling to have

When you feel you want to sing
Love is what you feel
About your most favorite thing
Love is a feeling

I think this song sung by Kermit is sad.

This frog has to go his own way
This frog doesn't care what the other frogs say
This frog wants to be happy, and this frog has to try
This frog is gonna make it or know the reason why
I'm not gonna sit here like some dumb old bump on a log
That isn't me!
I'm gonna be this frog!

This frog has a song to be sung
This frog isn't gonna spend his life in a swamp, catchin flies with
his tongue
This frog may slip and stumble, but this frog tries again
This frog never will grumble, but fall to rise again
This frog is staying with it, like a tick sticks to a dog
I'm gonna win!
You're gonna love this frog!
(This winning frog....)

This frog has some climbing to do
This frog has some dreams that he's makin come true
This frog never will falter, no not through slush or fog
This frog will not wear a halter, cause nothing halts this frog!
I made myself a promise as a young green pollywog:
I'll be on top!
Nothing can stop (Nothing can stop) THIS FROG!
(THIS FROG! THIS FROG! THIS FROG)
