I can't find my book of camp songs right now, but I remember an explanation in
it that this was a spinning song. Half of the group sang "boom-da, boom-da,
boom-da" as a background that was supposed to be the sound of the spinning
wheel while the rest of the group sang.
Sarasponda, sarasponda, sarasponda, ret set set
Sarasponda, sarasponda, sarasponda, ret set set
Ah-dor-ay-oh, a-dor-ay boom-day-oh
Ah-dor-ay boom-day ret set set
Ah-say pah-say-oh
The song started slowly and then repeated several times, each time getting
faster.
If I find out more when I find my book, I'll send more info.
But as of yet not one translation, or even a definate language! I have tried
french/english dictionaries, cant make hide nor hair out of it. Perhaps the
spelling is important? Anyone know if this is maybe not a French song but some
language that sounds like it? Come on, have another crack at it, can someone
figure this out?

I, too, learned it as a child but this book describes it as "Sarasponda is
an old Dutch spinning song. A mother sings it to her daughter as she
teaches her to spin. The words, which imitate various sounds made by the
spinning wheel, are also a part of some magic she is supposed to be
working. If her daughter can spin a long thread, she will get a nice
husband."
I happen to live in a Dutch community. I will see if I can find anyone who
would know the Dutch meanings of the words and I'll post them here.
