You all seem to be pretty much agreed but if it is the one I am
thinking of:
"rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby, rock the boat, don't tip the
boat baby....................."
then I was convinced it was by Forrest!

It was covered by Forrest. Painful memories of 1983, that.

I've never heard of Forrest. They may have done a version of
the song, but the one that was a big hit in the 70's was
definitely Hues Corporation. When was the one you're thinking of?

I posted previously that Forrest covered the song in 1983. That song just so
happened to end up a big hit in England (# 4) as well as most of the rest of
Europe. The one country that didn't want to hear it turned out to be their
homeland, the US.

101 Things I Hate:
# 16. Science fiction

101 Things I Hate About 'Friends':

# 16. Not only is it still on the air and it hasn't been cancelled yet, but
it's littered syndication markets, too.

From my page of 70's lyrics:
http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Alley/5201/NiceDecade/NiceDecade.html

Track Title: Rock The Boat

Album Title: Have A Nice Decade: disc 4
Prime Artist: The Hues Corporation
Written by: Wally Holmes

Lyrics:
So I'd like to know where, you got the notion
said I'd like to know where, you got the notion

to rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby
rock the boat, don't tip the boat over

rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby

rock the boat-t-t-t-t

Ever since our voyage of love began
your touch has thrilled me like the rush of the wind
and your arms have held me safe from a rolling sea
there's always been a quiet place to harbor you and me

Our love is like a ship on the ocean
we've been sailing with a cargo full of, love and devotion

So I'd like to know where, you got the notion
said I'd like to know where, you got the notion

To rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby
rock the boat, don't tip the boat over

rock the boat, don't rock the boat baby

rock the boat-t-t-t-t

Up to now we sailed through every storm
and I've always had your tender lips to keep me warm
oh I need to have the strength that flows from you
don't let me drift away my dear, when love can see me through

Our love is like a ship ..........

Sounds like you've got that cover version all straightened out. I
continue to learn....
