I might be wrong... but i think this is most associated with Marlene Dietrich.

Here's what someone else posted...

LILLI MARLENE (MY LILLI OF THE LAMPLIGHT)
- English words by Tommie Connor
- German words by Hans Leip
- music by Norbert Schultze

Underneath the lantern by the barrack gate
Darling, I remember the way you used to wait
'Twas there that you whispered tenderly
That you loved me
You'd always be
My Lilli of the lamplight
My own Lilli Marlene [pronounced "Lily Marlane"]

Time would come for roll call, time for us to part
Darling, I'd caress you and press you to my heart
And there 'neath that far-off lantern light
I'd hold you tight
We'd kiss goodnight
My Lilli of the lamplight
My own Lilli Marlene

Orders came for sailing somewhere over there
All confined to barracks was more than I could bear
I knew you were waiting in the street
I heard your feet
But could not meet
My Lilli of the lamplight
My own Lilli Mariene

Resting in a billet just behind the line
Even though we're parted, your lips are close to mine
You wait where that lantern softly gleams
Your sweet face seems
To haunt my dreams
My Liili of the lamplight
My own Lilli Marlene

Schon rief der Posten: sie blasen Zapfenstreich;

I agree with Erin, I do not know of any songs from Edith Piaf with Lili
Marlene. Maybe she did sing it once (but I never saw the French version of
the lyrics), or you are confusing Lili Marlene with another song of Edith
Piaf which talks about prostitutes : Milord, or L'Accordeoniste maybe.

If you need lyrics from Piaf (in French, I don't really have the time for
the translations) let me know.
