I've been loking for years for the lyrics to this song...
I don't know the title...it might be "This Diamond Ring"
Parts of the lyrics go like this..
"Hush little baby, don't say a word
Mama's gonna buy you a mokingbird
If that mokingbird don't sing mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring...
That's all I remember...help please
Thanks
There are many variations on the words to this song. I've heard one
very similar to the version you are quoting, and the line that
rhymes with "turn over" is "Mama's gonna buy you a doggie named Rover"
but that is followed up with
And if that doggie named Rover don't bark,
Mama's gonna buy you a horse and cart
I've also heard the line that rhymes with "gets broke"
as "Mama's gonna buy you a billy goat."
Your last line, about "sweetest little baby in town"
usually comes after
"and if that < billy goat, or horse and cart, or whatever > falls down."
Peter, Paul, and Mary do a very nice version of this song on one of
their albums for children ... it might be "Peter, Paul, and Mommy."

hope this helps ... to confuse the matter further! (grin)
Or James Taylor and Rita Coolidge:
If that diamond ring don't shine
It's surely gonna break this heart of mine
And that's why, yes indeed, I keep telling everybody
Yeah yeah, wo, wo, wo, wo, wo
Hear me now and understand
I'm gonna buy you smoe peace of mind
If that peace of mind won't stay
I'm gonna get myself a better way
If that better way ain't so
I'll ride with the tide and go with the flow...

Here's what I remember with a few gaps
Hush little baby, don't say a word
Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird don't sing
Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring turns brass
Mama's gonna buy you a looking glass
And if that looking glass gets broke
Mama's gonna buy you a cart and goat
And if that cart and goat turn over
Mama's gonna buy you ?????
And if that ?????????
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town
Someone else will probably give you more lyrics. If not, try
rec.arts.books.children, since this is also known as a nursery rhyme, and
there are many mothers and teachers who subscribe to that group.

No argument with the words, but don't you mean James Taylor and Carly Simon?

By the way, that's a wonderful signature
