DUKE OF EARL
- as recorded by Gene Chandler
Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl
As I walk through this world
Nothing can stop the Duke of Earl
And-a you, you are my girl
And no one can hurt you, oh no
Yes-a, I, oh I'm gonna love you, oh oh
Come on let me hold you darlin'
'Cause I'm the Duke of Earl
So hey yea yea yeah
And when I hold you
You'll be my Duchess, Duchess of Earl
We'll walk through my dukedom
And a paradise we will share
Yes-a, I, oh I'm gonna love you, oh oh
Nothing can stop me now
'Cause I'm the Duke of Earl
So hey yeah yeah yeah
Well, I, oh I'm gonna love you, oh oh
Nothing can stop me now
'Cause I'm the Duke of Earl
So hey yeah yeah yeah

Hi Matt,
I can help you with "Duke Of Earl" only.
- Duke Of Earl
As I walk through this world
Nothing can stop the Duke of Earl
And you are my girl
And no one can hurt you
Yes I'm gonna love you
Let me hold you,
'Cause I'm the Duke of Earl
When I hold you,
You will be the Dutchess of Earl
When I walk through my Dukedom
The paradise we will share
I'm gonna love you .....

Thanks for the responses. You've made some fine drunk singers happier people.

As for the Speedo/Mr. Earl stuff--this is a line from a solo Paul Simon
song (not with Garfunkle). That is NOT the title of the song, however,
which is why you're having problems finding lyrics. I can hear it in my
head--it's a slow song and he sings it with a fake accent (Jamaican or
some such)--
"she called him Speedoo, but his Christian name was Mr. Earl"
Maybe my posting this much will jog someone else's memory about what this
song is...because it's eluding me...
That may be the case, but there's an actual song that goes "Oh, some
people call me Speedo, but my real name's Mr. Earl.."...not sung by Paul
Simon, BTW...from what I've been told, the artist was a one-hit wonder
and is now working as a school custodian (but a very popular one with the
kids)...

Interesting...I have remembered the Paul Simon song, BTW, since I posted
this the other day. "Twas a Sunny Day"
Twas a sunny day
Not a cloud was in the sky
Not a negative word was heard
From the people(s) passing by........
Her name was Lorelei
She was his only girl
She called him Speedoo but his Christian name was Mr. Earl...
Maybe it was a cover.

Jesse Colin Young recorded a song that went "They often call me Speedo
but my real name is Mr. Earl". It could easily have been a cover, but
I wouldn't call him a one-hit wonder. The Youngbloods were pretty
popular for a while way back in the hippie days, and he was responsible
for most of their songs. He may be a janitor now,
but he was in the music biz for many years, and he still shows up in
concert lists on the web.
>It is written:
I think the song you're referring to is called Speedo, and it predates the
Youngbloods by quite a bit. I've seen it performed in a few "history of rock
and roll" documentaries by a black group, whom I believe is the Cadillacs,
of "Peek-a-boo, I'm watching you" fame. (Josie records) So in neither case was
the artist a one-hit wonder.

Sherman, set the Wayback Machine to November, 1955...The song is "Speedo"
by the Cadillacs (Jesse Colin Young was probably in diapers.) A classic
doo-wop song by a classic group. They only had one other chart single,
called "Peek-A-Boo," in 1958, but lots of other records, even an ALBUM,
on Josie Records.

That's why I said it was what I'd heard...:)...I don't know for
certain...
Thanks for the correction, though.

Speaking of which, my best friend has a cat called Speedo (though his
real name is Mister Earl). She is so sick of explaining to people
that he is not named after the swimwear. And she would be very
grateful (so woildf I) if someone would post the complete lyrics.
Thanks,

All right. Here's the story. "Speedo" was recorded in 1955 by the Cadillacs, of
whom Norm N. Nite's encyclopedia ROCK ON! reports:
"In late 1955, Esther (the group's manager) wrote a song about the group's lear
singer, Earl Carroll, whom everyone called 'Speedo'. The line that began the famous
song was 'Everybody calls me Speedo but my real name is Mr. Earl.'"
I don't know any more of the original lyrics than that, and I haven't yet found them
on the Web.
Paul Simon's song "Was a Sunny Day" on the album THERE GOES RHYMIN' SIMON (1974)
contains the lines: "Her name was Lorelei/She was his only girl/She called him
Speedo but/His Christian name was Mr. Earl."
Keep on cross-referencing,
