PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei,
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal PUFF
and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff.

CHORUS
Oh! PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei,
PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Hanalei.

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail,
Jackie kept a lookout perch on PUFF's gigantic tail,
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came,
Pirate ships would low'r their flags when PUFF roared out his name.

CHORUS

A dragon lives forever but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant strings make way for other toys.
One great night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And PUFF that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow - green scales fell like rain,
PUFF no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his lifelong friend PUFF could not be brave
So PUFF that mighty dragon, sadly slipped into his cave.

CHORUS

Here are the lyrics as printed in sheet music I have.

Verse
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah-Lee,
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff,
and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff, Oh!

Chorus
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah-Lee,
Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea
and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah-Lee.

Verse 2

Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail,

Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff's gigantic tail,

Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came,

Pirate ships would low'r their flag when Puff roared out his name. Oh!
(Chorus)

Verse 3
A dragon lives forever but not so little boys,
Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar. Oh! (Chorus)

Verse 4
His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain,
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his life-long friend, Puff could not be brave
So Puff that mighty dragon, sadly slipped into his cave. Oh! (Chorus)

Enjoy! It is a great song!

It's all about pot. Why are you teaching it to your kids? *joking* My dad
taught it to me, and I turned out just fine. *grin* -- Jason C.

AAAAKK! We had this discussion here a while back about the *rumor* that this song
was about drugs. It's not! I guess some bozo in the 60's thought it would be funny
to start it, but it's not true. Just a song about a dragon. ... But what *I*
always wondered about was, what DOES happen to Jackie Paper in the end? Does he
die? <sniff> When little kids ask me, I just say that he grew up and went away,
and that made the dragon sad.

Peter, Paul & Mary did a special on PBS a few years back and added ( I
think) two verses about Jackie growing up and then bringing his son to play
with Puff.
I only heard this version once and was unable to copy it at that time
(VCR had died ).
Since then the only version I've heard ended with Puff crawling into his
cave because without Jackie he couldn't be brave.
Those extra verses are wonderful, but I can't remember exactly how they go.

Is there a site for old folk songs?
Can anyone remember seeing the special? ( I think it was around Christmas
time )
Thank you to everyone that has beenSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOO helpful. My daughter
was asleep when I downloaded and started singing, She woke up and started
singing and then said Puff, mama, Puff.

i know they have a video for a Peter, Paul and Mary special from a
coupla years ago. It was something like Peter, Paul and Mommy II. I
think they have it at my library, so you might want to check at YOUR
library.

the lyrics on the Peter Paul and Mary website don't show a different
version, but there is an emphasis on the last chorus that he LIVES by
the sea... whatevah that means.

here's the lyrics and links i've found that might be useful
:)

When I was small, my mother knew a verse about Jackie's son who went and
visited Puff. She doesn't remember what the verse is, and so far, I haven't
been able to find any reference to it anywhere.
